ACTUALLY IF YOU READ HER BOOK PATTI LuPONE A MEMOIR SHE EXPLAINS THAT SHE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THE SCORE THAT ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER WROTE!! AFTHER SINGING 8 TIMES A WEEK SHE WOULD HAVE TO BE IN VOCAL REST HER FREE DAYS AND AFTHER EVERY SHOW SO SHE COHLD SING THE NEXT PERFORMANCE!!
Can someone please explain why Patti LuPone is such a big name? You can never understand a word she sings and she exudes a full-of-herself-ness that really rankles. And if any of you showboys retort with "But it's Patti LuPone", then you have just lost the right to even talk to me.
@billabongditty i'm not a fan either. but i think its because of things like this performance right here. passion. & her voice is simply undeniable, its huge, bright, and she sings with a ton of strength. i personally dont have trouble understanding her. her Mrs Lovett was the only time I actually understood the words :). and the other reason i would assume is the pathological drive "I Will Happen!" that can usually carry a person to any goal they set for themselves. but i feel you. not a fan.
@adam4757 Patti addresses that in her memoir. The part can be sung, but only very carefully. At first, she had a lot of trouble with it and throughout the run of the show was getting extra vocal lessons so she could do it right. They had to dumb it down in the movie for Madonna, and generally when it's produced on an 8 show-a-week schedule, an alternate sings the 2 matinee shows so the principal can save her voice.
AMAZING that you have this!!! I would have loved to see Patti play this role. thank you for giving us this rare glimpse. thank you, thank you, thank you :)
@mjoyce1999 i nver respond to user comments but can't resist here. your comment is the most ridiculous i've ever heard. you;'re complainin about quality in a bootleg that is 30yrs ago and of a subject whos recorded production doesn't exist ANYWHERE ELSE in the world. please, do me a favor and find better. do ME a favor and don't waste MY time with such dribble...
@NewNickTahoe Here here! This is amazing archival footage, and I don't know how you found it (or what you did to get it), but I'm glad you did. Thank you for posting. Fabulous.
the original Magaldi in the original australian cast has sadly passed away too some years back- La Pone came to sydney to replace a vocally destroyed Australian girl as Eva !
this was totally awesome !! i will really imitate this one..!!! we will be having a broadway in our school and i was chosen to be the director !!! this can really help !!!
@Denturewearer they have videos of all of the shows at the Lincoln Center Library - they really should release it on DVD they would probably make a fortune!!
@gavyj5191 for one thing, it serves to introduce the aristocracy in the show, who will be eva's ememies and a rival she tries to but ultimately fails to beat
@gavyj5191 --the monolgue is intended to show the differences between the classes at the time in Argentina--the rich went to polo matches while the poor starved. And most the wealth in the country was owned by the British, which increased the resentment of the working classes against all things British, like polo....this inequality between the classes is what led to the rise of the Perons.
@gavyj5191 I agree with you, gavy-if you listen closely to the dialogue in this-it is pretty peculiar why Tim Rice would chose thes words to explain the hated aristocracy. So what if the English lost to the Argentine players in a polo match? I think this monologue goes on unecessarily, but good explanation, NickTahoe.
@gforcestp The point of the polo match is to show how much influence the British had in Argentina. Upper class Argentines would emulate them in dress and style, and sent their kids to Eton for a proper education. The Brits also controlled the industries and utilities, but when Peron came to power he nationalized them, pretty much kicking the Brits out. The expulsion of the Brits is alluded to in Act II ( "Rainbow Tour," "The Actress Hasn't Learned the Lines," and "She is a Diamond").
@gavyj5191 It stands to represent how established the aristocracy are in BA. For an educated english man to say he'd "Never seen a social occasion quite like it" is a big deal. It was probably extremely excessive and decadent. And it does set up the dichotomy of Eva (lower class) vs Aristocracy (upper class).
It's kinda like what's happening right now in America; showing how 2% of the country owns 98% of it.
@gavyj5191 It lets the audience know what is going on with the British in Argentina - provides some context for everything that is to come. The Aristocracy appear throughout the rest of the show.
@gavyj5191 I think it was meant to establish the timeframe when Eva arrives in Buenos Aires. But, as someone else said, it also introduces the Argentine artistocracy (the music during the polo match speech is the same music used when the aristocacy criticizes/mocks Eva).
How very sad this was not professionally filmed ever in the decade or so it ran with them. Someone needs a sever talking to. Our only hope now is a 'le Mis'-esque concert performance, but then there's the staging loss. Apart from the brilliant vocal work, this show also had/has brilliant staging. I almost wet myself the first time I saw it. (should I admit that publicly?)
So well crafted (Written/Scored/Directed/Executed) Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin gave such life to this work it's a no wonder it was a phenomenon. To be in a theater with the two of them performing this show must have been nothing less than spine tingling. My question is when will a DVD be release of the Broadway show with them the performing to juxtapose the valiant, but lackluster Madonna offering?
I really like a lot more Elena Roger....you can really understand what she´s singing and she means it...like when Patti sings Beautiful town I love you....it sounds good but you really feel it when elena sings it....and of course all those street names like florida and corrientes (which is an avenue) sound sooo much better because she´s from buenos aires
I thought Madonna was pretty good in the movie. It's hard to compare film and stage productions. Madonna's own life resembled Evita in a lot of ways so I think she brought a certain amount of realism.
@cmw1226 She points out the main attractions in B.A. :) Rio De La Plata (The River of Silver) the main river in Buenos Aires, Florida (Calle Florida) that's the main shopping street in Buenos Aires (an outdoor mall if you will) Corrientes (that's the province in which B.A. is located (The Beverly Hills of South America) Nueve De Julio (9th of July) That's the main street - the centre of the downtown area (An historic fountain adornes it.) - That completes Argentine History - no more space.
Aww, the cameraman didn't catch it, but it's my favorite part in this song. During Ché's little monolog, Eva wanders away from the dancers and inches closer to the aristocrats, admiring their jewels and clothes. But each time she gets too close, they push her away. She gets pissed and throws herself into a fiery dance.
They are also very different politicians. Palin is involved in politics because she believes she can make a difference (but it's debatable whether she actually can or not). But Evita wanted to be famous just for the sake of it.
Ms. Peron did an incredible amount of work for her people and women's rights. Eva was not a politician she was a humanitarian, no one sets out to become a saint.
Way of ahead of you! I already wrote some demos along the lines of "I'll Be Surprisingly Good For You" and "A New Argentina."
I also included a song based on "Wenn Ich Tanzen Will" from "Elisabeth," which is also along the same lines. But I am at loss who will be the detached ironic Narrator. God any ideas? =)
"Dice are rolling, ballots are out. Would be candidates all around. I wouldn't say they're much harm, but they'd each give an arm to see us six feet underground."
"It doesn't matter what those morons say! Our nation's liberals are feeble crew. There's only twenty of them anyway. And what's twenty next Christians who are looking to you?"
Or how about... MILF Hunters adore So bitchy, an instant queen. A rich beautiful bitch, of all the talents. A cross between a hot soccer mom and a saint. You were just a white trash girl Shooting and knifing, always gay bashing. MILF Hunters adore Could they believe in their wildest moments? All the Jews will soon be yours You'll soon become the MILF lust of them all!
Che missed his cue. He was like a beat or two late. lol only I would notice this XD
