A brick is way cheaper, besides it frees up my drill press to do other things.......like droll holes.

Yes, a heavy object resting on top would do the same thing. You're just looking to provide uniform pressure on the "sandwich."

Clever, but not all drill presses were created equal (mine, for onstance, doesn't have a lock-down mechanism * yet *)
