This is all very well. Unfortunately BE is only fast when you're close to the exchange. I was on BE's highest-speed package - but I rarely got over 1MB/sec! That's why I'm moving to BT Infinity (fibre to the cabinet). Be was good otherwise - but they simply can't deliver the speed when you're not really close to the exchange.
@arbimd it would have to be phone line. I have a fibre virgin connection and always a 50mb(MEGABITS) speedtest connection and from most sites I often get 5MB/S(MEGABYTES, this is due to certain websites and services like P2P which I can get the full 6.25MB/S often, can't always transmit at the full 6.25MB speed). So compared to a upto 24mb(MEGABIT) connection the virgin fibre would leave Be in their dust.
Good that you have demonstrated the traffic shaping on BT. They are not the only company guilty of this. I recently left Plus Net Business because things like Windows Update and driver download sites were almost unuseable. The general public are being tricked with huge download speeds but in reality that is only between them and their local exchange, after that most companies destroy the connections completely. I moved to AAISP and so far the connection is truly astoinishing!
With Virgin media I download always with 1 MB on a 10 Mb contract. Flash player downloaded while I pressed save, so no actual download at all from my perspective. My only problem is the upload speed of 512 Kb/s. Also there is throttling during the day but it doesn't bother me coz it's big enough (1.5GB+3GB)
@jnash2007 that is a great speed for conventional adsl, broadband used to be 512k down 256k up, then we moved onto 8mb down 448k up (or 832k up for 'premium services'
people say over £219 per month for 2mb up / 2mb down SDSL, so 8mb down 1.4mb up for <£20 a month is incredible and that speed is excellent for upstream.
I wish I could get more from my BE internet connection.
I only reach a max of 5mbps when I pay for 24mbps. Of course I'm not going to get the full 24mbps but it is lower than the average supplied to most of the ISP users for this company.
The ISP average user for BE gets around a quarter to a third more speed than I receive. Thinking of downgrading to a cheaper package by them for the same speeds as it looks as if I'm capped at 5. Or going to Virgin or anyone else offering fibre-optics.
@Raener Let me tell you something about internet provider they describe there internet in meg but have you ever thought of the b? b=bits B=bytes 1 byte=8bits so 24 devided by 8 is... 3!
@TimmmmCam i think its like no matter what time of the day your net will be still on a high speed unlike other internet and if there is a lot of people that are using the net at a company which my slow the internet service provided from it you'll still have your own speed no matter what at BE i " GUESS "
Shame on you BT ive had a be broadband for a few years now and no problems what so ever. I used to be with Tiscali broadband and they only gave me 2 megs connection and i was always connecting under 1 meg i then changed to be broadband and im getting nearly 4 megs which is really good providing im quite far from my exchange you cant complain really
That's why I like Be, if I'm paying my money I don't expect traffic managing at all. Also the reason why I didn't go for O2 as well.

Currently using a BE Broadband connection.
Downloading a 100MB file at a whopping speed of 48kB/sec.
I can't even stream Youtube videos on the lowest quality on this connection. Consistently ludicrously slow; it's like being back on dialup.
By way of comparison, a BT line in the same area gets a download speed of just shy of 2MB/sec.

@mikeharry50 Try running the download at 8pm.

Be however are THE BEST ADSL broadband in the UK.

BT is shit

And that is why I left BT for Be. nearly 7 meg during the day, but 1 or less every evening from around 7 pm to around 11.30.
I am so tempted by infinity, but scared of getting 20 meg daytime and still only 1 meg evenings.

That BE upload speed is still a bit crap if you ask me. 1440kbps is hardly "insane"

@jnash2007 True that. I have 8200kbps on BT :D

@jnash2007 Good for where I am. Fantastic compared to the BT line. But Annex M / Upload+ on a line closer to the exchange would be more awesome.

This test doesn't prove anything. The BT connection could just be much further from the exchange.

Can every copper BT Phone-line support ADSL2+ ?
kezmanandchaps 2 years ago
@kezmanandchaps Its to do with the DSLAMS at the exchange not the copper, if your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled then you can get it.
