I have a mini cooper s for my first car. (i am 16 and a very good driver who knows his car's limits) If that mini cooper knew it's limits, it could have done way better than the cayman s on the turns. Depending on whether or not this was a 2nd generation mini cooper s, (07+ models and up, turbocharged along with the sport package, which stiffens suspension and gives the car a tighter turn radius) he could have killed the cayman on the corners. Just saying, the mini's handling is top-notch.
Thanks for watching. Nothing wrong with shifting when you need to and the car is far from the limits. You must not know too much about driving on the track.
no....actually, my friend, i know plenty about driving a track...you always complete your shifting pre turn in...go back an re-read the basics. you never shift through a corner, you lose all potential to track out properly.
You only shift pre turn in if you're not smooth enough to shift in a corner. Dont get me wrong, it is smarter to do that, im just saying...it is possible.
Generally, true. But, not in this corner. The goal is the technique that is FASTEST time.
After 10,000 miles on this track, in many different cars, and after reviewing data of many drivers.....the fastest section time is a mid-corner shift just when the rear tires pass the point the corner goes from down hill to uphill and just before you have to increase steering input for the decreasing radius.
Amazing that youngsters who have never driven this corner, want to debate it.
@jonasd99 Everyone's probably saying that because you're losing the flow of your momentum. As you can see, when you downshifted in the middle of that corner, the mini cooper pulled ahead a bit more than he already was. That kind of shows that the downshift was a bad idea. Just my 2 cents. I also believe that shifting beforehand is always faster if you were to take a turn at your car's threshold because shifting would shift the weight of the car. That's just dangerous. *You weren't at threshold*
*Who knows though... I've never been to that track... So, my argument is somewhat nonsensical. But that's what I believe, and I'll keep it that way until a corner shows up that proves me otherwise, or I see professionals regularly doing it on certain corners, not because of errors, but because it is the faster way.*
No, he gets more room, because I lifted. We entered a place that passing was not allowed. I backed off, once he gave me a wave to indicate that he saw me and would be letting me pass at the bottom of the hill.
Its not dangerous to shift when you are not at the limit. In this case the prior downhill corner entry coupled with the severe uphill elevation change provides more grip that a low HP car can use. But that did not matter because I was only driving 8/10, waiting for the passing zone
I agree with you completely Jonasd99. You've driven the track enough times to know when a new gear is needed to exploit the track and your car... Screw the doubters, they can't get their minds past institutional brainwashing - let alone the car ahead them! :)
Thanks for commenting. These guys just don't yet realize that beginner's classes teach you the basics. Those of us that get into the racing circuit have to unlearn some of those beginner's rules. Many are simply the training wheels on a bicycle.
nice video, and smooth driving! I love my MINI and I love my 997. that mini had a nice turn-in through those corners...guessing a super stiff sway bar??
as a fellow mini driver i can say that the only way most cars can catch a cooper is in the straights....in the bends its hard to run down a mini especially since most people equate it to trying to run down a go-kart
bad driving. don't try to cut curves that much

Thought you would have passed a mini sooner. Get the tiptronic. He would have been done on the third turn.

It's not a good idea to shift during a turn.
You should be in the right gear beforehand.

nice try,
I also drive a R53 Cooper S, and I know by experience, that a mine can't seriously compete with a cayman ...
I also would rather own a cayman ;)

if there was a car that could catch it in the turns though, itd be the cayman s. mid engine, better than anything else for that. killer car.

You are right. Its small wheelbase and excellent-balance chassis make it great in changing directions
