Haha :D The Lagotto is certainly a type of dog that requires constant activity and playtime, which the video clearly demonstrates. I wish I could join their little game :)
I have come back so many times to watch Vera that it's high time I posted a comment. We love Vera (so like our own R&W in every way, though markings are slightly different) and Millie is ultra cute! Big hugs to Vera and Millie from their fans in Northern Ireland.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed, originally a water dog or retriever but later bred to find truffles. It's not supposed to have much of a hunting instinct left but at 8 1/2weeks Millie is already a terrific retriever fetching her toys to me all the time, so I hope she'll be good at fetching ducks one day.
The shotgun made the water spaniels popular, but it was decided to make a bigger dog for this work. The Canadian colonists already had a net-hauling dog called the St. Johns Water dog. This was imported to Britain and crossed with the water spaniels and setters. The modern Labrador is said to be very similar to the St. Johns Water Dog. But all retriever breeds come from those crosses with water spaniels and setters. BTW, I just got a golden retriever puppy with really strong instincts.
The Lagotto is a remnant of a lot of water dogs that once existed throughout Europe. The Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish Water dog, the Barbet and the Poodle are the only ones remaining. There was once a breed called the English Rough Water Dog in that same family. It was absorbed into the water spaniel family. There were once many breeds of water spaniel, not just the Irish and American. My guess is that this dog will be able to be trained as a duck retriever.
At this point it certainly looks like she'll be a great duck retriever one day. She fetched her first toy from shallow water yesterday and she seemed to love it. I'm a bit surprised that lagottos aren't so well known in the USA. They are getting increasingly popoular here in Europe. Thanks for the information about the roots of our modern breeds. Good luck with your golden puppy! Is it a male or a bitch?
LMFAO. I'm sorry, but 0:24 - 0:28 is hilarious. The Irish Setter completely pummels the Lagotto.

That was really cute. I thought that my lab/beagle mix was a wild puppy. I don't think he was as wild as that.

The red and white can be found in the USA, but the Lagotto is unheard of.
