I was there 3 days after this video was taken; a few hours after you filmed this I got in my car in Seattle and drove to DC, stopping at Lear Lake along the way on the 6th.You'll notice a little blue T-bird between the guitar and records; I placed my KZOK keychain in the car. Met a few good people there, too. I'm glad I took the time to do the side-trip, it was definitely worth the time and effort. As for the Canadian flag: it was knocked down when I was there; I put it back up.
omg. how can u guys standing? i would have to lock my knees together to keep from falling to the ground hysterically crying. RIP Ritchie, We all miss you. :.(
Wow; why are people so concerned that there is a Canadian Flag there? I would think you had better things to comment such as what a nice tribute there for them. I am quite sure Canadians are just as much fans as anyone else!
@RockabillyBabyGurl that's why theres a thing called flowers and btw i don't care how old you are, you're 16 of course you have better grammar and you're telling me to get a life...in this vid alone you already posted like more than 3 comments and being a fucking little bitch on a comment that was posted like 10 months ago....yea i need to get a life (sarcasm)
Thank you for paying tribute the way you did. I was born in 1975, but still got to love theyre music, long after they were gone.. thank you for keeping the memory alive.
Exactly as when I was there 3 days later! vicsvid's scarf (another YouTuber who was there a few days before us, his vid is here on YT) is still draped on the guitar, I can't see the blue T-Bird where I put my KZOK keychain. But the totes, the Canadian flag, the wreath, buttons...they're all there, I got pix! I'll never, ever forget this experience, it was more than worth the detour driving from Seattle to DC.
Man...I was in Clear Lake last summer. Really should've looked for this. Oh well, I'm in Austin now, I can just drive to the Lubbock Cemetery and pay my respects there.
I can't believe there is no memorial there at the crash site...just a small plant with some flowers. Something should have been done to remember some real history.
@brainards1 Actually, there's a very large pair of black, steel Ray-Bans in the field next to the intersection of 315th and Gull, and when you go 1/3 mile west on foot along the fence, you will see a stainless steel monument: a guitar silhouette and 3 records. It's been there for a few years and it's well-maintained.
@brainards1 sorry i should have been more forward with my description...the memorial is a guitar made out of metal as well as 3 record discs one for each of the stars...with their record label of the time on it also ...hope this helps
I was there about an hour or so later in the morning of Feb 3rd, 2009 (having attended the 50th Anniversary Tribute Concert in the Surf ballroom the night before) and can vouch for the cold, so much so my eyes were streaming and hands almost unable to take pictures despite heavy gloves. My pictures also have the long shadows.
I was born in Argentina in 1975, I did not know these musicians, I only listened about their names and of some songs interpreted by other artists, but what meant it is that it is exciting to see that they happened more than 50 years and still these boys still are remembered and respected, if had known they it would be very proud, I am in favor of trying to conserve the past, this is exciting, congratulations!!
Thank you for showing how it would be in Feb. I was just there this week on one of my motorcycle tours. Early Sunday morning, just me and some birds. Very peaceful and quiet. All was green, with corn and beans in the two fields. To die too soon... RIP
Luckily Dion and the Belmonts were not on that plane !!

It looks barren, just like music is nowadays without them.

@RockabillyBabyGurl Where did I say it was illegal for Canadians to go to Iowa? I was talking about the flag being there.
mrceebees14 8 months ago
Why are people asking why there is a Canadian flag there? That really is a stupid question!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say a fan left it there as a token.
fairyfay80 9 months ago
I didn't know Iowa was in Canada.
What is with that flag???
mrceebees14 11 months ago
what is the big problem with the Canadian flag! i think it shows that Canadians loved them as well.

Was there this May 10, 2010 and also stopped at the Surf Ball Room.
Surf Ball Room all kind of stars performed there, pictures everywhere.
Was eerie going up on the stage where they did their last performance.
Crash site, lonely site among the cornfields. It was very cold and real windy there..
Was great to stop here and to pay respect to the 3 "stars".

it almost looks the same as it did back then in 1959...scary.....3 stars who will always be missed
