1. If you want to know what oppression can be, research the Germans in the occupied territories in World War Two. India is a huge country, with a huge population, and if the people had really wanted the British gone, it would have been like a fly on a elephant's back. Far from being all bad for India, the British prevented India becoming numerous small countries, all armed to the teeth, and fighting war after war - just like Europe. The British served a purpose, and there were many benefits.
2. A common language - english - and a common legal system, help enormously. Business and trade are made easier. Railways were built to a standard gauge - unlike Europe. Whatever suffering occurred, was far, far less than in Europe. Had Britain been able to disengage properly ( i.e. without orders from the American empire ), maybe India and Pakistan would not be nuclear-armed. Think about it!
3. Connections only exist if there is something positive. In 1915, my great uncle was killed at Neuve Chapelle in France, with 1/39th Royal Garhwal Rifles. He was a British officer from Devon in England. This year I received an invitation from Lansdowne Camp to attend the 125th Raising Day anniversary of the First Garhwal Rifles. I cannot attend, but I am honoured to receive it. A comment I made on a YouTube video of a GR Passing Out parade had been seen, and they contacted me. I like that. Zen

4. endemic greed in many classes.
