not at all did anyone have to destroy that. imo... but from my seat im just a speculator... its more touble to pick up the broken pieces, than to just leave it in tact and upright ....
@Ezekeiel they couldnt use it, it was too old, and scrap metal is more valuable then a three story monument to rust and decay. does it make sense now why they destroyed it?
Sad.... Another relic stupidly blown away. US people visiting Europe always go see historical sites, buildings, castles, etc... which are all well preserved and taken care off, so people can visit them, see them, experience the feeling of long times gone. US historical stuff is around too, but tearing down is less expensive than keeping it safe and possible to visit. They seem to forget than once such a decission is taken, there's no way back.. Soooo sad... Money is the issue, instead of value.
@onekeypianoplayer I know, I know, but still : these are relics of the Space Age, they will be as valuable in the future as remains of centuries ago over here in Europe, and.... they just blow them up.... Look what happened to the LUT : why didn't they preserve that ? Can you imagine that tower with an upright Apollo-Saturn5 mockup along side ? In addition : such a project would have been paid back in no time by admission fees, no ? Such a waste...
@airbeamer Agree, we have no monument standing of the greatest achievement in this country or for that matter the world. We should be preserving the accomplishments of the past in order to measure our future by.
The top of the gantry tower at Complex 36 was used as a TV camera platform by the bnetworks for coverage of the Mercury orbital launches, the Gemini flights, and Apollo 7. You can see examples of TV coverage from some of these launches on Youtube.
NASA could have fixed up the area some and converted the site into a historical landmark and offered tours of the site and other sites that havent been used in many years

@sddragon28 far from it actually.. i lack the interest .. nor do i care to create the point of view on which this topic has at all a right or wrong.

Kinda strange to look at a launchpad while a countdown is called out -- but there's no trace of a rocket to be seen...!

@fulteacup Well, there's little we can do from here (EUR), USamericans should commit themselves to preserve these sites

Assuming air temp is 20C you seem to be about 1.5Km away from the tower, where d=v.t v=343m/s and t=4.5 sec .... COOL!!
