Friggin' love Phillips (he blew my mind with The Who) and have always thought his drumming on "The Sea Refuses No River" on the solo Townsend album was one of the all time best modern drumming pieces ever. That being said, Bellson seemed to have a more stylish and expressive touch. Gotta go with Bellson (but who cares! Both brilliant).

Louie is one of the best. Only one that is in his league would be Buddy Rich. I met Louie personaly. He was a wonder person. Lord has another wonderful drummer with him now. As for Simon hes great to but you cant compare the two mabey you can compare Simon to Jeff Porcaro

this is the kind of "drum battle" that I like the most. instead of caring only about themselves and how they sound they actually care about what the other person is playing so that their ideas are connected. I think that there are no comparisons to be made when the drummers actually work together

this is classic, even though simon has more energy and ability in ways, louie knows how to make those drums speak, his licks are really great, just not trying to outdo simon, but speaking with his drums, i remember first seeing this, and when simon starts really going with the double drums and fills, he says, oh, i think louie is gonna have to take a heart pill, what a great battle, both superb players

Saw this video back in the mid 80's on a tape called "Super Drumming". This tune was called "Heart Attack Tango". Tape also had Cozy Powell and Pete York on it.

Even at this age Louie is a better drummer than Simon Phillips, who's probably no more than half Louie's age at the time this video was recorded. In his prime Louie would have wiped the floor with Simon. Louie is also the nicest musician that I ever met, so to see somebody calling him a "faker" really pisses me the fuck off.

Alot of non drummers are missing the point sometimes. If you have umpteen drums and cymbals in your setup it looks impressive to go from one to another to another etc. but it doesn't take as much pure skill as playing a basic set really well. Buddy Rich for all intents and purposes only had a 4 piece set ( rarely used the 2nd floor tom) and he said i have not mastered that setup fully. Don't get me wrong Simon is a great drummer.

Just in this short clip you can see an enormous difference in talent despite Louie's age. Simon sticks to standard rock fills and Louie's playing has much more meat between the bread....

Introduced to Simon when he sat in for Priest back in '77(Sin after Sin)...he's simply one of the best session people to watch...what can you say about Mr. Bellson,one of the the true great gentleman of Jazz....whether with Ellington or Townshend,these two guys are incredible.Great video!!
