This is awesome!!! I totally agree with that there is no best only different styles adding to the ability to learn how to play accomplished drums GOD BLESS all the drummers on the planet and those who are playing in that big Heavenly band in the sky
Que excelente video. Se lo dedico a mis amigos bateros que aman la musica y no piensan cojudeces como "este es mejor que aquello o que ese otro..." y aprecian a los buenos bateros de siempre.
Is this from the TV drummers special (probably BBC) which also featured (among others Bill Bruford and Nicko McBrain?). I think I remember seeing this as a kid. If so, does anybody know if it's for sale?
Nothing inspired me more to start drumming myself than those four bassdrums at the final, powering every listener up from his chair! Great memories to 1987!
Friggin' love Phillips (he blew my mind with The Who) and have always thought his drumming on "The Sea Refuses No River" on the solo Townsend album was one of the all time best modern drumming pieces ever. That being said, Bellson seemed to have a more stylish and expressive touch. Gotta go with Bellson (but who cares! Both brilliant).
Louie is one of the best. Only one that is in his league would be Buddy Rich. I met Louie personaly. He was a wonder person. Lord has another wonderful drummer with him now. As for Simon hes great to but you cant compare the two mabey you can compare Simon to Jeff Porcaro
Simon Philips play like Billy Cobham's School... Billy Is The Father of Modern Drumming Style... respect to the greeeat Louie Bellson !!!!!!!!! i adore his style and taste !! :)
this is the kind of "drum battle" that I like the most. instead of caring only about themselves and how they sound they actually care about what the other person is playing so that their ideas are connected. I think that there are no comparisons to be made when the drummers actually work together
What makes this so good is the respect they have for each other. Louie is such a nice guy, anyone who would "blow him off the stage" would have to be a moron.
this is classic, even though simon has more energy and ability in ways, louie knows how to make those drums speak, his licks are really great, just not trying to outdo simon, but speaking with his drums, i remember first seeing this, and when simon starts really going with the double drums and fills, he says, oh, i think louie is gonna have to take a heart pill, what a great battle, both superb players
Saw this video back in the mid 80's on a tape called "Super Drumming". This tune was called "Heart Attack Tango". Tape also had Cozy Powell and Pete York on it.
Simon Phillips is a modern great, responsible for may new techniques, however players like Bellson/Rich Antolini and many more from the jazz world were groundbreaking in their time and still magnifficent....all this "whos the best" is a load of shit .Grow up wankers
@jgeorgel ...I wonder if Simon thanked Louie for INVENTING the double kick setup that he uses? I also second ChiTown7721 reply to you, your a pure F&%$!
@jgeorgel - Who the fuck are you to call Louie Bellson a faker? Louie is one of the all-time greats. Second tier? Please! Simon Phillips doesn't have shit on Louie Bellson. Even at this age Louie is a better drummer than Simon Phillips, who's probably no more than half Louie's age at the time this video was recorded. In his prime Louie would have wiped the floor with Simon. Louie is also the nicest musician that I ever met, so to see somebody calling him a "faker" really pisses me the fuck off.
Simon Phillips is a great drummer - but anyone who calls the great Louis Bellson '2nd tier' probably doesn't deserve you wasting your time with a comment - but I share your pissed offness ;-)
Alot of non drummers are missing the point sometimes. If you have umpteen drums and cymbals in your setup it looks impressive to go from one to another to another etc. but it doesn't take as much pure skill as playing a basic set really well. Buddy Rich for all intents and purposes only had a 4 piece set ( rarely used the 2nd floor tom) and he said i have not mastered that setup fully. Don't get me wrong Simon is a great drummer.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Bellson in his prime isn't anywhere near Simon Phillips, who happens to be one of the greatest drummers to ever walk the planet. Louie was always a 2nd teir guy..
@jgeorgel Simon is a quicker drummer and a master mechanic. Let's see how he does when he is in his 70s like Mr. Bellson. This was made in the 80s I had it on VHS. I have always viewed simon as one of the premier drummers in the business though.
Just in this short clip you can see an enormous difference in talent despite Louie's age. Simon sticks to standard rock fills and Louie's playing has much more meat between the bread....
Introduced to Simon when he sat in for Priest back in '77(Sin after Sin)...he's simply one of the best session people to watch...what can you say about Mr. Bellson, one of the the true great gentleman of Jazz....whether with Ellington or Townshend, these two guys are incredible.Great video!!
They are both same Great drummer.
