No, no no...Good ears..I believe that they actually mixed both a soprano and a countertenor to get the "castrato" sound. It has been a long time since I read this, but I think it is fairly correct.
nice try but he's lip synching to a female voice (and doing a bad job at it) I guess there's no castratos around when you need one!

The voices are Ewa Malas-Godlewska - soprano, AND Derek Lee Ragin - countertenor. Both voices were used, and engineered to blend.
This is truly one of the most beautiful movies about music ever created.
