There is also a larger quantity of dollars than there is gold so we would have to destroy a bunch of our money if we tied it to gold. All basic economics.
Dollars will continue to lose value in the present system.
Backed currency has the effect of stabilizing a currency. This is due to the trading power of the respective countries. Over-valued currency = lower trade & deflation and vice versa. With increasing trade = increasing value in currency and inflation(more dollars). Basic economics. We operate in a fiat system which doesn't fit this model hence trade deficit but high inflation.
Your statement that backing a currency stabalizes it might be true in theory but in practice that has never been the case -- as soon as the quantity of the good backing the currency increases the value drops and vice versa. Also, in a traditional backed currency system (i.e. gold) manipulation through hording and then selling off the backing good has always created difficulties. I reserve judgement on Rep. Paul's proposal because it apparently isn't traditional and I don't have all the details.
Currently, banks create money via debt and then collect interest on it - this is a net loss of money from the people to banks - hence, more money must be created - and the econ. must expand exponetially. Money in todays economy is not only created through but actually is the debt of the federal gov't -- backed only by the promise of its exchangeability. This system is by no means perfect and almost guarantees inflation I, therefore, have my problems with it since the only thing keeping money from being worthless is trust in the gov't. Still, it is the system used by all but two countries in the world so I don't think the USA deciding to do what Rep. Paul proposes is practicle.
I believe the course we are on is one of assured destruction - perhaps this is known to the ruling elite. The deeper we dig the hole, the harder it will be to get out. At this rate of dollar devaluation, how much longer to you think we've got? Countries (and supermodels) have already begun to shun dollars. We can't bomb our way out of this but we will try. Staying this course assures perpetual war.
So you understand the system yet are happy to continue the status quo as it sucks the marrow from this country. Besides violent persuasion, is there some other way of keeping this false economy afloat? I see none. If things don't get better it will be precisely because your type of thinking (though informed)is too common among us. This country has been and can be again - self sufficient. Outsourcing, debt, wars are a direct result of the exponential growth paradigm.
My personal feeling is that the extreme gap between rich and poor is the ultimate economic problem of our time. Gov't, however, isn't the solution as shown by the predictable failure of socialism/communism. We need a change, that is not disputed, but currency backing isn't the answer because it doesn't adrees inflation (a general rise in price levels) or the main problem of weath disparity.
It directly addresses it. Inflation is caused by the increase in dollars - prices don't just decide to rise on thier own. Perhaps during population explosions or shortages of certain resources but we have neither of these situations. Our prices are sky high on oil and housing precisely because of the devalued dollar. Other prices have not changed much only because they are made with slave labor.
Wealth disparity can be addressed by evening the tax burden but direct intervention = communism (high govt control)as you mentioned. Taking away the inflation tax is where to start. I'm surprised you don't see the relationship b/t money creation and inflation. Gold rising is a perfect ie of devalued money CAUSING a general rise in price levels not vice versa. As the dollar falls gold rises.

No I would classify it as farmers will become poor without the subsidies and will have to sell their farms. Then your food will come from overseas, more expensive, more jobs lost.
Farm subsidies push farmers to increase quantity and decrease quality. That's why our nation is becoming a nation of Fat people. People are fat and starving for nutrition. That's why fat people have such a big appetite. Read about Westin A. Price. this is not new.
Farmers can aquire new methods that yeild higher profits(google Polyface Farm & Joel Salitan for more info)
coming from the midwest and living on a farm I can honestly tell you THERE are NO POOR farmers anymore...the poor farms who failed to incorporate are no more. Todays Farmers are rich corporate presidents who receive govt. money. Todyas farms are no different than any other fortune 500 companies....THEY ARE CORPORATIONS WHO CREATE PRODUCE.
my fathre was forced out and there were plenty of tough years. I hope for the best for those who them who are families trying to make a livign off the earth: they are, in part, that which made this nation great. ron PAul for president...he will, I think, be a vital asset to the American family farmer.
I know that Ron Paul means it when he says he will slash wasteful programs and bloat. His record proves it and no other presidential candidate can hold a candle to his record.
He is the only true conservative running in my opinion. Ron Paul has a grasp of reality and real solutions to our economic woes. Some sound radical, but radical change in monetary policy and spending is exactly what we need to save our dollar and our middle class.
Remember to donate to Ron Paul on the 5th of November. A day that all of us shall always remember. Don't give up the fight true patriots of America, or else we'll lose our country forever!
We all know Ron Paul has come up short on debate time. This Sunday October 21 will be the Fox News Debate hosted by Brit Hume. I urge every one to e mail Brit Hume (special at fox news . com) requesting equal time for all candidates. Paul's message deserves to be heard.

We are on the high road to tyranny. We have 737 Military Bases and Counting
There aren't that many countries -- we certainly do not have 700 embassies around the world. After you see this and not vote for Ron Paul you are a TRAITOR!
How is ethanol being subsidies while electric/biofuel cars are more realistic eathanol takes as much if not more energy to burn the fuel than to make it. Its a waste (at the moment) maybe when the tech comes to improve upon it and allow better ways to produce it then we should work towards it but for republicans and democrats using tax money where the free market should make these decisions is just stupid. We need a real republican saying no to subsidies and stop being a little girl about it
very soon its gonna be pitch forks and torches in this country and im ready to through who ever is in office out ....were gonna get this country straightened out with another civil war or ron paul but either way im going to see one of those 2 things happen in my life time will you iammasterlion? vote ron paul or see us vs. the gov't
iammasterlion first off fuck a novel ... im 19 years old and i got the common sence to see how our gov't has been doing things sence i been alive ... if u like canada's dollar being worth more then ours vote anyone but ron paul.... and if u want our family and freinds over sea's dieing and gettin fucked up for us to save face then yea ur right ....
I disagree. By making a large government, you give the corporations more to buy. Ron Paul would shrink the government to where the politicians wouldn't be worth buying.
Government brings only one thing to the table: coercion. That's what big business buys. Why increase the value? Big business cannot harm you without government intervention and approval.
Small Government means less taxes. This will provide incentive to small business. This will lead to real job growth, not the phony government job growth. This leads to prosperity for more individuals, and will allow the small businesses to have a better chance to compete with big business.
Mainstream media claims the support for Ron Paul is small faked and not enough to win elections. To counterattack that garbage we have created a petition that will be submitted to ALL mainstream media to show the BROAD range support for Ron Paul and liberty in general.
SIGN THE PETITION TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE SUPPORT FOR RON PAUL IS REAL.

Ron Paul has no concept of how international trade works or how Islam threatens our freedoms. He is an isolationist and a scold, who can't handle today's world.
Sorry, Zile, you are a baiter... and completely incorrect: Ron Paul knows trade, any and every kind (international and otherwise), better than any of the other gumballs AND any of their advisors. He has been studying economics and writing papers and essays for over 30 years.
You might be right that he will split the Republican party, and it is about time - their corporatism is giving a very bad name to true free market policies.
Ok let me refrase myself then, vancerz. He doesnt sound like most people who call themselves republicans. Probably, the republican politicians, like most North-Americans, are so fkn stupid they don't even know they are doing the opposite of what they should do according to their name.
This Scott Rasmusen is a fucking asshole. He said what the problem is, then defended it. He is right, most Americans don't know shit about the economy or politics, but THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!
I am sick of this fucking country and its willfully ignorant populous.
Americans are getting exactly what they deserve. High taxes, bad education, limited freedoms, no personal privacy, no private property and high gas prices.
Use your head. If 50% of the country is Democrats and the other 50% is Republicans, and 58 % of Republicans support the war and all the Democrats oppose it, that would leave 42% of Republicans (21% of Americans) plus the 50% who are Democrats to oppose the war, resulting in 71% of Americans opposing it. Our math agrees.
42% to Ron Paul, 58% divided 8 other ways -- or, at least 4, even if the other non-CFRs all drop out -- sounds like a great opportunity to me. And those numbers are going to keep going our way from now until the primary, because Iraq will continue being Iraq.
Actually it's somewhat the other way around, but nothing is ever perfect on this planet. And, again, that 58% will do nothing but shrink between now and the election.
AIPAC Israeli lobby is pushing hard for the USA to attack Iran, just as they did with Iraq. Congressman Paul Findley said "in seeking gains for Israel, they rigorously stifled dissent and intimidated the entire Congress. They still do. They defeat legislators who criticize Israel." Google: Terrorstorm-2hr,America: Freedom to Fascism-2hr, Loose Change-2hr & 'Walt Mearsheimer Israel'
Freedom's Watch, which is advertising for the attack on Iran, was planned in March at the winter meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Manalapan, Fla., where Vice President Dick Cheney was the keynote speaker.
"One benefactor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the group was hoping to raise as much as $200 million by November 2008. Raising big money "will be easy," the benefactor said, adding that several of the founders each wrote a check for $1 million."
I have a screen shot of the poll on CNBC last night showing Ron Paul got 74% in a landslide. There are Freedom Marches all over the country this Saturday. The time is NOW to get off the ropes and join your local meetup, my friends and patriots. Fight the infowar!
Vote for the empty vapid responses that make you feel better and sing you off to sleep! You guys with your "facts" and "reason" and "common sense" are so annoying.
Bah...I'm getting back to my sandbox where I play good guys vs. evil freedom hating guys and fantasize about Mitt Romney- JUST LOOK AT THAT MAN'S CHISELED JAWLINE!!! Thats all I need to see...yessir, he has my vote.
Hillary is the queen of earmarks, she won't release that information to the public. You want small govt. vote for Dr. Paul. Everyone else will continue the downward spiral!
if 100 million americans want RON PAUL we will get him... the powers that be will not have a choice.. this is why our founding fathers gave us the second amendment.. if the government gets out of hand and becomes a tyrant, the Amercan citizen can and should take up arms against it to get back to a constitutional government.. why else do you think that the government wants gun control. With paper trails

Paul would fix earmarks, Dr No would say just that. A paul administration would rain vetos until the message got through. Just look at his record. I can't see that changing just because he is in an oval office.
I don't think nothing is going to change if we have these "touch-screen voting machines" which I know "deep in my heart" were TAMPERED WITH BIG TIME in 2004 explaining why major cities (full of minorities) voted more for Bush than small town communities (that used paper trails). This is the major problem we need to deal with first!
The people are tired of politics as usual. It is time for those serving office to look in the mirror to see the problems with government. Ron Paul has the balls to do just that. Let's all register as republicans and vote for this man in the primary. A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for real and lasting change.
What a weird discussion! They got on the subject of downsizing government and the people wanting that because of their brief interview with Dr. Paul. Then they say stuff like "we need someone to talk about this" and "whether it's Romney, Thompson, Guiliani, Hucakabee, whoever; it would help them win". WTF? So talking more like Ron Paul would help others!? How about you just back up the one candidate who has chosen to stand for those values regardless of how politically useful it is!?
Because we live in a corporatist one-party-state (that pretends to be two). Instead of "direct" government control. It's indirect, using corporations to control the USA. The federal reserve is corporation controlling the US currency. The Associated Press is a corporation controlling the press, it's so simple to understand. And from an evil profiteering standpoint, it's common sense for evil people to do it.
Well if the American people want smaller government and lower taxes, but just don't believe that any candidate will deliver...
then I say, Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is honest, intelligent, and consistent. What he says he has been saying for 20 or 30 years. What he says is backed up with facts and history.
With Ron Paul, there are no surprises. No back room deals, no special interest lobbying. Ron Paul is the only candidate who can save America from tyrannie, war, and bankruptcy.
Ron Paul DOMINATED that debate!!!! Unfortunately, I have little faith in the ability of this country to recognize it. I can only pray that Ron Paul will be able to get his message out to the everyone so he can secure the nomination. The MSM Blackout continues.

coming from the midwest and living on a farm I can honestly tell you THERE are NO POOR farmers anymore...the poor farms who failed to incorporate are no more. Todays Farmers are rich corporate presidents who receive govt. money. Todyas farms are no different than any other fortune 500 companies....THEY ARE CORPORATIONS WHO CREATE PRODUCE.

i live in indiana and i know many small-time farmers who struggle to get by year in and year out. not to mention, none of them get subsidies.

Vote Ron Paul for real change!

A Question for all Ron Paul supporters
What is Ron Paul's plan for countering the growing power of big corporations in America?
Ron Paul supports small government. In a conflict between small government and big business, who do you think is going to win?
There is a great novel called 'Jennifer Government'. Read it and know that if Ron Paul gets elected, 'Jennifer Government' will become a reality.
Ron Paul is inadvertently helping big business. Vote Dennis Kucinich
iammasterlion 4 years ago
I disagree. By making a large government, you give the corporations more to buy. Ron Paul would shrink the government to where the politicians wouldn't be worth buying.
Government brings only one thing to the table: coercion. That's what big business buys. Why increase the value? Big business cannot harm you without government intervention and approval.
dangfitz 4 years ago 5
Small Government means less taxes. This will provide incentive to small business. This will lead to real job growth, not the phony government job growth. This leads to prosperity for more individuals, and will allow the small businesses to have a better chance to compete with big business.

You're an idiot. Islam threatens our freedom? Ummm... how? Imbecile...

58% of Republicans still support the war. Therefore, Ron Paul loses. Next?

70% of americans do not support the occupation of Iraq. So, that doesn't leave a lot of your republicans standing.
roachmobile 4 years ago
Sorry...Americans
roachmobile 4 years ago
Use your head. If 50% of the country is Democrats and the other 50% is Republicans, and 58 % of Republicans support the war and all the Democrats oppose it, that would leave 42% of Republicans (21% of Americans) plus the 50% who are Democrats to oppose the war, resulting in 71% of Americans opposing it. Our math agrees.
TheMyrkat 4 years ago
42% to Ron Paul, 58% divided 8 other ways -- or, at least 4, even if the other non-CFRs all drop out -- sounds like a great opportunity to me. And those numbers are going to keep going our way from now until the primary, because Iraq will continue being Iraq.
RP 08 FTW
ProspectorSam 4 years ago
Not all of the 42% are going to vote for Ron Paul. But all of the ones who support the war are going to vote against him.
TheMyrkat 4 years ago
Actually it's somewhat the other way around, but nothing is ever perfect on this planet. And, again, that 58% will do nothing but shrink between now and the election.
The Constitution pwns neocon stupidity.

How about you just back up the one candidate who has chosen to stand for those values regardless of how politically useful it is!?
momerath42 4 years ago 14
Because we live in a corporatist one-party-state (that pretends to be two). Instead of "direct" government control. It's indirect, using corporations to control the USA. The federal reserve is corporation controlling the US currency. The Associated Press is a corporation controlling the press, it's so simple to understand. And from an evil profiteering standpoint, it's common sense for evil people to do it.

then I say, Ron Paul.
