I pretty much agree with what James says. I enjoyed the film and I really liked the way it was shot from the perspective of a person stuck in the middle of all of it. That made it different and interesting, but overall as a movie it wasn't that amazing. Probably worth a watch just to experience the feel of the film, but it's nothing to write home about. It didn't live up to the hype in any way at all. Although I was never interested in the hype at all when it was all going on.
It's not monster film. It's film about alien invasion(there are more monsters than one in it) and everything(overall atmosphere, commotion of people, military intervention, scale of destruction etc)proves the point. It's a unique film and for camera one,it's really good at that. It's never boring and camera shaking depicts nervousness of persons filming. They are running, being scared and they don't care about footage quality. It's recorded more as file/documentation-to be found after all ends,as memory
Well it's not a monster film(it's invasion film)and yes a main integral requirement for a film to be classified as"monster"sci/fi is that there's only 1 monster! Not just that the reviewer got many things wrong but just because it's camera film he compares it to Blaire Witch. It's definitely not "one watch" film and ending I must say is one of the best(most realistic of endings).I reluctantly went into cinema expecting trash but came out glad I have made decision not to miss it
@BoxyTheSpaceDog Alien movie? I heard it was a animal that was contaminated by radiation (obviously cliche) and that it woke up once a bomb or something else disrupted its sleep.
Wikipedia isn't really credible source for info, maybe you should know that as well.Monster film needs to be about one monster, the city is attacked by few of different ones! The scale of panic, destruction and military response is as if it's invasion!Something similar was done in The Myst film! The beings aren't familiar to people since they do have trouble destroying them. They had to resolve to total destruction(at very end of the film).
I was HUGELY disappointed when i went to see this movie, but only because i was so hyped for it. I went in expecting the next big monster since Godzilla, but it turned out to be only your average monster movie.

It's time to repent now, so Jesus Christ may forgive you. Get right with God now, and don't wait.
This movie is one of those movies where I love it, and everybody else hates it. Why? I don't get it. Same thing with Avatar, King Kong, Spider-Man 3. What is it about movies I like that people just disregard or hate?
@calataris Well, to be fair, it is one of those movies where I understand why people don't like it. I just hate that everyone I knew made fun of me for liking it.
And the unoriginality, to be honest, it doesn't bother me that much, because nothing is really original anymore. At all. So that argument, to me, holds no ground.
Out of curioisty, why didn't you like it. I'm curious.
@MrJorge006 You know, that's actually one of the better reasons I've heard. And yeah it is long, but that didn't really bother me. I don't know, maybe it was like King Kong in which there's so mauch to look at, that I didn't care.
But still, good reason. And better reason than most I've heard.
@ComedyStanCam Yeah, we need more attacks on other movies like San Diego, Miami, or even Honolulu. I would love to see Honolulu destroyed by a giant moster.
i dont believe a trailer should tell you rather if you'll like it or not. legend of the guardians is a perfect example. the trailer made it look like a cliche kids movie, but it wasnt
This movie is ironic, a guy is having a going away party before he leaves to JAPAN, and for some weird fucking reason.. a gigantic 150ft MONSTER appears.
(possible spoilers) I really hated this movie in how they spent such a long time building the background for the characters(which is normal I guess). But when you finally think you've waded through all the bullcrap and get a chace to see the monster terrorize the city, you only get glimpses. Only at the end do you get to see it for like five seconds, and you realize that the characters were pretty much screwed anyways. So the point is, neither the characters or the monster were worth it IMO.
when i first saw this, I was like OHH yeaaa awesome movie? then fiund out it's on a fucking camera recorder!!! alll the wayy through till the end?? but still good MOVIE
when i first saw the trailer in the theater i thought it was going to be a Rampage movie based off the videogame, it got me hyped up,the ni was all like "cloverfield?,whal the hell? this movie is going to be shit." and i was right
@stlouisrocker100 When you expect Godzilla, you actually get Godzilla. In Cloverfeild I only got to see the monster at least 2 or 3 times, tops. But the dickhole hole holding the camera wasn't exactly making things better. And yeah you could argue with me about how The Blair Witch project started the POV Genre, but in my opinion it was one of the worst ways for a Genre to launch. if you want a good POV film that actually scares you, I would reccomend REC.
@MonkeyBoy3000ii I've seen REC and yes it is good. That was my one big problem with Cloverfeild. As realistic as it would look it actually did make the film a little bit of a headache. But I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Suffice it to say that camcorder filming isn't meant for every film.

I liked it but I didnt want the cameraman to die. Also, the movie didnt really tell a story, it's just people running away from a monster that we have no idea how it got there
I don't hate this movie, but I didn't like it that much. If I want to see a "handheld camera" movie, I'd watch [REC], Paranormal Activity (All of them). I know that the genres are different, but the ones that I quoted were better, in my opinion. Actually I got hyped by Cloverfield's trailer, but in the end, I didn't like it; and no, not because of the ending.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE "The Simpsons"! But WHY did they have to shut down the Back to the Future ride for it?! Couldn't they have shut down one of the less popular rides?!
@Leon5k I agree that the acting was pretty bad in this, but then again who truly acts in their day to day lives? I think it succeeds in portraying an incredibly massive upheaval of daily life. Personally, I think the movie really tanked not so much because of the attempt at amateur-looking camera work or bad acting, but more at the fact that none of the characters are remotely likable. We can relate to their problems, but their problems are the petty issues of soap opera characters.
@xFIRERUSHx well no its cause many of his complaints are really bad anyway im not going into this..............Ill just say most people who hate this film hate it not because of the quailty of the film but what they expected and thats completely unfair.
@IGNsucks Well that is what happens with every movie. If your expectations are too high, then you are never gonna like a movie because most likely, the movie has no way of living up to your expectations as you expect too much. This doesnt happen all the time. I watched Indy 4 and when I saw it in theatres, I had very very high expectations and I loved the movie. I watched Cloverfield with no real expectations and its okay. Not OMG amazing, but good. I like the unique film style.
@xFIRERUSHx but thats my point you shouldnt do that, its not fair to the director, hes trying to create his vision not yours so putting your own expectations into the final product and then judging the movie based on those expectations instead of judging the movie for what is it is unfair and makes this a bad review.
@IGNsucks Wait...What? How is it unfair to have high expectations? When someone is excited for a movie, it isnt as if they want it in a certain way. They just want the movie to be good. When Revenge of the Sith came out, I thought it would be cool if Yoda caused all those scars on Palpatine. But he didnt. That didnt kill the experience because the movie was great. There is nothing wrong with hoping. If you expect a movie to be good, and it isnt, well then it probably is a bad movie.
Cloverfield was so boring and trite. I don't understand why people liked it at all! I tried to watch it but just ended up fast forwarding hoping to find a good part, which never came. The monster just looks like the same old CGI mess as used in 90% of sci-fi games/movies these days.
it semed really to me short because only 3 senes had the monster in detail.the way it was shot anoyed meand it didin't give a back story,i got a nest of what ever the hell those things are grew in lady liberty and when the big one, the queen i gess got P.Oed it got out,but it would have been nice to have a little help. i didin't know if they all died at the end or what, and the begining at the party was super long. all in all i give it 7/10 cause i still liked the monster, the story and people.
dude,, ever heard of.. ppl that are hired to hang out in malls.... and what they do is.. stand next to ya in a cd shop and say man have ya heard this yet its awesome... little do you know they gettin payed for it.... im thinkin the hype movies get nowadays..is just ppl who get payed to spread the word... yeah im prob just cynical
Man I love James and his reviews, but I think he is dead wrong with this review, I thought this movie not only lived up to the hype but is the best monster movie that's ever been made.
I hope James does a review for 'Devil' by M. Night Shyamalan. It's similar to Cloverfield as a 'one-shot deal' although I don't think this will give the 'scare' James is looking for, it may deliver in the creepiness of the concept =D
@animefin don't call it an m.night shymalan movie because it's not. I get that it's marketed as an m.night shymalan movie which is totally ridicules cause thousands of people hate his movies but he actually had no involvement in the films creation besides creating the concept(but not actually writing the script). Yeah he produced it whatever it doesn't even count he organised the production and got everyone together but it's not really his movie at all.
@animefin main involvement goes to the writer and the director. Look up Devil on rotten tomatoes or wikepedia or imdb and you'll probably find out who it was
Cloverfield was a movie with lots of mix reviews. I like it because it put you in the spot of the citizen and it was a movie that you could say, If it was real, this is what it would be. People who hate, hate it because of sudden camera movements, and a bland beginning. People who love it, love it because its the realest thing you could get, for a monster movie.
I ve never seen a movie with such corny lines ,the movie is perfect for retards. which is why it was so successful considering most the population is retarded
You know what's bullshit? This movie on the big screen. Especially when you're forced to sit in the front row because the whole fucking room is full of assholes who showed up 30 minutes early. When half the time you can't tell what's happening, because you can only see sections of the screen at a time when it's already hard enough with the camera shaking like the guy has fucking tourettes. That's bullshit.
The thing about the people who say the ending sucked have to understand, THIS IS GOING FOR BEING LIKE REAL LIFE NO REAL ENDING, people can think about this movie and the ending, plus the recording that they show at the end shows how the monster awoke
That new movie the Darkest Hour reminds me of Cloverfield

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE "The Simpsons"! But WHY did they have to shut down the Back to the Future ride for it?! Couldn't they have shut down one of the less popular rides?!

if u saw the movie in theatres there would be a sign that said cloverfields filming technique is like being on a rollercoaster

This movie was bad from start to finish. Bad actors and bad overral. I have nothing good to say about this crapy movie!
And people who says that its cool that is from a camera view or whatever, it sucks and the endig is really bad also.
Leon5k 7 months ago
@Leon5k I agree that the acting was pretty bad in this, but then again who truly acts in their day to day lives? I think it succeeds in portraying an incredibly massive upheaval of daily life. Personally, I think the movie really tanked not so much because of the attempt at amateur-looking camera work or bad acting, but more at the fact that none of the characters are remotely likable. We can relate to their problems, but their problems are the petty issues of soap opera characters.

Well done movie in my opinion.

I think this is the first time I thumb down an AVGN video, this movie was great.
IGNsucks 7 months ago
@IGNsucks so just because his opinions are different from yours, you thumbed it down? He never said it was a bad movie.
xFIRERUSHx 7 months ago
@xFIRERUSHx well no its cause many of his complaints are really bad anyway im not going into this..............Ill just say most people who hate this film hate it not because of the quailty of the film but what they expected and thats completely unfair.
IGNsucks 7 months ago
@IGNsucks Well that is what happens with every movie. If your expectations are too high, then you are never gonna like a movie because most likely, the movie has no way of living up to your expectations as you expect too much. This doesnt happen all the time. I watched Indy 4 and when I saw it in theatres, I had very very high expectations and I loved the movie. I watched Cloverfield with no real expectations and its okay. Not OMG amazing, but good. I like the unique film style.
xFIRERUSHx 7 months ago
@xFIRERUSHx but thats my point you shouldnt do that, its not fair to the director, hes trying to create his vision not yours so putting your own expectations into the final product and then judging the movie based on those expectations instead of judging the movie for what is it is unfair and makes this a bad review.
IGNsucks 7 months ago
@IGNsucks Wait...What? How is it unfair to have high expectations? When someone is excited for a movie, it isnt as if they want it in a certain way. They just want the movie to be good. When Revenge of the Sith came out, I thought it would be cool if Yoda caused all those scars on Palpatine. But he didnt. That didnt kill the experience because the movie was great. There is nothing wrong with hoping. If you expect a movie to be good, and it isnt, well then it probably is a bad movie.
xFIRERUSHx 7 months ago
@xFIRERUSHx if you thought revenge of the sith was a good movie then we have nothing further to talk about.

Cloverfield was so boring and trite. I don't understand why people liked it at all! I tried to watch it but just ended up fast forwarding hoping to find a good part, which never came. The monster just looks like the same old CGI mess as used in 90% of sci-fi games/movies these days.

ZacharyPiskura 8 months ago
it semed really to me short because only 3 senes had the monster in detail.the way it was shot anoyed meand it didin't give a back story,i got a nest of what ever the hell those things are grew in lady liberty and when the big one, the queen i gess got P.Oed it got out,but it would have been nice to have a little help. i didin't know if they all died at the end or what, and the begining at the party was super long. all in all i give it 7/10 cause i still liked the monster, the story and people.

I hope James does a review for 'Devil' by M. Night Shyamalan. It's similar to Cloverfield as a 'one-shot deal' although I don't think this will give the 'scare' James is looking for, it may deliver in the creepiness of the concept =D
animefin 9 months ago
@animefin don't call it an m.night shymalan movie because it's not. I get that it's marketed as an m.night shymalan movie which is totally ridicules cause thousands of people hate his movies but he actually had no involvement in the films creation besides creating the concept(but not actually writing the script). Yeah he produced it whatever it doesn't even count he organised the production and got everyone together but it's not really his movie at all.
KelanDWood 8 months ago
@KelanDWood oh I didn't know that. Thanks KelanDWood :) So he was more of a side/co-producer? Wonder who the main involvement goes to...
animefin 8 months ago
@animefin main involvement goes to the writer and the director. Look up Devil on rotten tomatoes or wikepedia or imdb and you'll probably find out who it was
KelanDWood 8 months ago
Cloverfield was a movie with lots of mix reviews. I like it because it put you in the spot of the citizen and it was a movie that you could say, If it was real, this is what it would be. People who hate, hate it because of sudden camera movements, and a bland beginning. People who love it, love it because its the realest thing you could get, for a monster movie.
ActionRaccoon 9 months ago
I thought James would've at least liked how they put a frame from King Kong in after the helicopter falls.

I'm not sure why everyone hates the ending. Did you expect them to magically kill the monster, say a one-liner, and then have cheesy music play?

You know what's bullshit? This movie on the big screen. Especially when you're forced to sit in the front row because the whole fucking room is full of assholes who showed up 30 minutes early. When half the time you can't tell what's happening, because you can only see sections of the screen at a time when it's already hard enough with the camera shaking like the guy has fucking tourettes. That's bullshit.
