Great reading reactions of people wanting to do the same...... If you have not a done an avalanche course, cannot read the terrain.... don't EVER try this.
Use a guide.
If the piste had been nearer, piste skiers could have been buried - and you WILL go to court for that and face a jail sentence.
So no Avy piep, shovel and probe = no off piste.
No Avy course (/ terrain reading course) = no off piste without a guide
That pitch where the avalance happened, which is apparently known to be a dangerous spot according to the comments below, whereabouts is it in relation to the piste map? Which piste does it lead onto ? Thanks :-)
I Have just done a season in Alpe D'huez it was the 2nd febuary and i was planning on doing that very spot until my mate saw this video and luckly i changed my mind and decided against it lol
I know the area well and this confirms why I don't ride this sector. These guys were lucky, people in the past haven't been so lucky in this exact spot!!!
That slope (the Magician) is one of the most dangerous in the whole area. It's at 38 degrees steepness which is just perfect for avys, is set on slippery grass and faces east, away from the prevailing wind. On that day, the winds had been coming from the south and had cross-loaded the ribs. There's also a nasty terrain trap at the bottom in the form of a deep lateral ditch before the piste. Idiotic to be skiing it then. Nice camera work to catch the action though.
Can you even call that an avalanche?
