Just some info a bass player provided on talkbass.com: I've seen Louis when he played with Billy Preston. He was 17 years old at the time. He was a good bassplayer then and was NOT thumpin and poppin at the time. He had taken the place of...Keni Burke who WAS thumpin and poppin at that time! Keni had moved from Chicago to L.A. to be around his friend Larry Graham.
This is a very good bass player but it isn't louis johnson you can lots of influence of mark king and louis but it isn't louis. Louis ha a diffrent kinda groove
This is a very good bass player but it isn't louis johnson you can lots of influence of mark king and louis but it isn't louis. Louis ha a diffrent kinda groove
Cliff Burton is the king, you can't get much better than that. And there are different styles. You can't compare both. Respect his style, because he was really good at it, as metalheads respect Louis, because his good in what he does.
@Steve128967 Man, different styles. He shaped the pick-style of playing bass. He was the first to make solos at Heavy Metal. He was also a great composer and lyricist. He was good at what he did, but if you compare him with Louis considering the slapping techniche, obviously he will lose. As if you compare Louis with Cliff considering the distorted style, Louis will lose.
@FriedChickenofDeath6 Cliff didn't play with a pick, he didn't write lyrics and he wasn't really anything special as a composer, the only thing that he came up with most of was Orion and To Live is To Die (excluding Anesthesia, which is a mess)
I didn't mean to compare Cliff to Louis but obviously Louis is better considering he can actually play on time and without mistakes, whereas even in the recordings Cliff was REALLY sloppy-- and his "solos" were just shit pentatonic guitar solos, at best.
@1StTubeYou No, not even close... Roger Patterson, Doug Keyser, Pete Perez, Sean Malone, Steve DiGiorgio, Alex Webster, Lars Norberg, Erik Tiwaz, Jeroen Thesseling or Forest Lapointe. Look them up.
@Jake101686 I agree with you wholeheartly ! But lets add two more to the mix Larry Graham and Mr. Casper the Friendly Ghost himself William "Bootsy" Collins.

My favorite bassplayer LOUIS JOHNSON. On You tube, is anyone can play on CELEBRATION from the album "light up the the night" and MIDNIGHT SOUL PATROL (Quincy Jones) with stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham on drums on Youtube ? Louis plays amazing solo on these 2 tunes ? Can anyone explain to us his bass technic for these 2 songs. Many "funky" thanks ! Alain
who IS that drummer? i am sure of one thing, black guys have been teaching white guys what was worth knowing in american music for 150 years. maybe recognizing social injustice empowers the imagination.
werd. there are funky whites yellows and browns 2. But im white and can freely acknowledge that blacks have brought the funk for decades! and most funky white guys have bit their style or collaborated with them.
@Clampz123 i'm a white guy, and i'm sorry, blacks command the funk feel and groove on the thudstaff!. few a white guy comes around w/ a smooth, thick, meat and potatoes funk drive like this!
Damn this is a classic I still have this concert on cassette, This was in 1980 or so, They went into "Get THe Funk OUt OF MY Face" after the solo. Classic Brothers Johnson concert.
Talk about "SLAPPING" the taste outta the mouths of all these music machine loving, sampling, remixing 20 times, dubbing the song so it sounds so stale new jack artist (for lack of a better term). When was the last time these new jack artist w/exception to a few.....do you even see/hear REAL MUSICIANS?!?!

Alex Webster etc. have no feelings when they play. They just have to play it fast cuz,
it´s deathmetal. Look Cliff up on Orion. He can play both fast and with feelings. And by the way. Alex Webster is inspired by Cliff Burton.
