I know this video is old and the blog listed has been taken down, but a quick suggestion for anyone trying to make a similar language learning video... please take out the background music. It is hard enough to learn a language by simply watching a youtube video, we don't need music in the background to distract.

at starting i was like okay...ngo you ..boring when you keep repeating it, and then when u zoomed out your camera then i see that picture "lou fu ji" i Loled. Lmao
@evilgerbiyu You speak too much Putonghua, LOL! Either way you look at it, it's all 我要咖啡. I find I do a lot of that 'drawing the character in the air' thing with Cantonese speakers. Thank goodness they're all so patient and kind with me. Most of the time they ask me to shift to English. I ask them if my Putonghua is bad and they say no, it's pretty good, it's just that they don't speak it. I change to English, but my accent is so heavy they make me go back to 'characters in the air', LOL!
@catwoman2970 People are lazy. The proper way is nay. Ngo (as in 'I') is correct while 'oh' is wrong. Same with the word boy, which is correctly pronounced 'nam jai', not 'lam jai'. I pronounced this wrong my whole life even though I'm Cantonese. They don't really teach correctly anymore.
kockgunner - I didn't know boy is 'nam jai' wow. I was taught 'lam jai.' So if 'l' is used when it should be 'n' in some cases, that makes it inconsistent and now I'm less sure of what is really correct. Darn. Funny, I said to my grandma today ,"Ngoh lo bahn jing ngo faht lao." My mom repeated me but said "faht nao." So I need to get her to clarify.
I think the using the 'l' sound sounds more natural. That's probably why people use it more. I didn't know faht nao had an 'n' sound. It sounds so weird that way! I want to speak the language correctly but I don't want to sound like an old fashioned person ha.
hi its my 1st lesson to cantoneese,b4 dis i learned mandarin,,can u tell me weather cantonese iz difficult or mandarin? i mean can i easily learn cantonese??
Cantonese is one of the dialect most use in Hong Kong or Canton. if you're going to Hong Kong, it's best if you learn Cantonese. If you're going to other states in China it's better to learn Mandarin.
I love Cantonese and I'm very proud that I grew up with this language. I'm a first generation American in my family and I'm re-learning Cantonese so I can talk to my grandmother better.
Good for you! I live in San Francisco and we have a huge Chinese population. I learned Spanish, and having grown up around so many Chinese, I'm finally going to learn so I can speak this cool, beautiful language and communicate with some many who are around me.
Always love Chinese language and culture.....so I'm stoked. (Why didn't I do this years ago?)
That's a good motivation! I'm trying to re-learn Cantonese too. I can speak fluently, but there are many idioms and words that I don't usually say that I don't know. I was learning Korean and about the culture, but recently I realized how cool Cantonese is. A different tone can mean something completely different. I wish I spoke more Chinese as a child.
I thought "want" = "serng" ?o_O
我想茶。(I want tea.)
jd9547 5 months ago
@jd9547 That's more equivalent to the Mandarin "xiang" which is more like "would like," as in "would like to eat."
destructicon500 4 months ago
@jd9547 different word but same meaning

我要咖啡加奶同糖?
That sounds so wierld. you won't say that..
我要咖啡加奶 is ok,, but not 同糖..
timothychongg 2 years ago
咖啡加奶加糖 for coffee with cream and sugar is what you'd hear in Hong Kong.
Anybody agree/disagree? Other possibilities?

AGree~!

咖啡 is borrowed from English coffee. The English word "tea" is borrowed from a southern dialect of Chinese (Southern Min).

Doesnt "Ga Mai" mean add?
XqubbertX 3 years ago
Only one sound "Ga" means add.
calistocolin 3 years ago
"GA" means "add"
"Lai" means "milk"

Why am I seeing the "n" sound being replaced by the "l" sound? e.g. you = "nay" but people are saying "lay" now??
catwoman2970 2 years ago
I had friends from Homg Kong when I was a kid. They always did that too. Maybe it's the HK accent...

Cantonese is big different from mandarin.
Mandarin is very useful in mainland China.
Cantonese is one of the dialect most use in Hong Kong or Canton. if you're going to Hong Kong, it's best if you learn Cantonese. If you're going to other states in China it's better to learn Mandarin.
