I've been doing half moons on my nails for a while, personaly I either start by covering the whole of my nails in a pale "french manicure" color (not white), or I just leave them clear, and THEN I draw the red part. I find it easier to aim the nail polish brush in this way, I just (carefully) angle my brush from one angle of the base of my nail, in a half circle, to the other angle.

The reason Dita uses this polish design is because in the 30's it was the "in style" If you happened to go to beautician school before the 70's you had to learn how to paint this style in school! It is known as "moon's"

Note: It's easier to do a Dita Half-Moon by going out and buying cheap french manicure tips which instead of using them on your tips you use down the bottom to section off the pretend half-moon. Not only do they stop from getting the colour on the moons, they also help to give a more natural moon curvature.

i know what your getting at, i thought that too, but, then i realised when i tried it, that the white/sliver stands out so much better and the nail is smooth when stroked after dry, where as on my other nail, it felt a little hilly where the white had been place on the red, cause the red needs two layers. x ^..^
