Deep Purple Rocks! One of my all time favorite live acts! Seen them since 1970. until Gillian left. Burn tour was last I saw. No Gillian - Dio sucks!.

I think it had something to do with controlling his screams and vocals... but i'm no expert so i'm just guessing

@sirlordwhitman When he does that, he is listening to his head voice, which allows him to hear the pitch of what he's singing better. That was a trick loooong before proper monitors were invented!

Most likely because Ritchie's rig was to the left of him, and those Marshall Majors would have been f*cking loud!

@sirlordwhitman The on stage monitors (for hearing what you were doing) were not great in those days, so singers would put a finger in their ear to help make sure they were in tune. RB played very loud also so it must have been hard for Ian to hear himself...

I'm guessing - but in those days monitoring wasn't what it is nowadays and he's doing that simply so he can hear his own voice better. If you can't hear your self singing against a band, you can't pitch correctly, and if his only vocal is only in the front of house PA, he'd never hear himself.

Modern monitoring is much improved hence there's no need to do that nowadays although you may see it done by singers in pub bands with no monitoring.
