  • Does anyone here know why these teen tragedy songs were such a popular genre in the 50's and 60's?

  • @thEannoyingE

I think it is just a case of different writers and labels following a theme that was successful for others. Back then, songs were written and released very quickly, so if something was hot on the charts, others tried to duplicate the sound.

  • Okay...this has puzzled me for YEARS! Who is the guy in the audience with the shoulder length blonde hair?

  • @garymichael1950

That is Gary S. Paxton, who is a singer, songwriter, and producer. He has worked with many artists over the years. As a singer, he was Skip (of Skip and Flip) on "It Was I" and "Cherry Pie." He was the guy who did "Alley Oop" (as Hollywood Argyles) and he was also produced "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett. Gary is quite a character and has a long history in the music business, but is not a name most people recognize.

  • @DooWopJoe Mystery solved..thank you so much...it's been driving me crazy for years! Oh yeah! In his day, Paxton was a true hit guy! BTW..really enjoy all your posts!

  • @garymichael1950

Well, glad I could answer your question! Listening to Gary talking during this show was really fun. He is a humorous guy, and has done so many great things in the music industry. Quite a character!

  • OMG Outstanding song I love it

  • I ALWAYS LIKED THIS SONG. JUDA59ful

  • What great memories! Thank you.

  • @LeoNJMaisonneuve

You're welcome! This was a great concept to get all these artists in one room, and it was very well done. Too bad it was seen by so few when it aired.

  • iwas lucjky enough toseedickie lee at an oldies coincert andthiswas the best song hedid ithink igot his autograph

  • The Dutch version is still well known in Holland, but actually that was a pretty bad translation of the original. Why did he change the last lines - by accident?

  • I Love this Song it takes be back in my Teen age Year .

  • the dutch version cold patsy from Rein De Vries

  • Paches is a song about what being ostercized wil do to someone....

take it from someone who's been ositercized fror most of her life

  • Most parents sing a lullaby nope not mine they sang and still sing this I love this song!

  • The last verse he say wrong is it may nt be right but I'll join you tonight patches I'm coming to you

  • used to have a great prog on satellite tv over here in the uk called larrys country diner run by larry black had some gr88 guests on and it was real funny as well

  • I loved this song. It tears at your heart still.

  • I love this song! I was 16 when it was released. It is sad and yet a very romantic song. Love you Dickey Lee.

  • IWe don't get R'n'R graffiti intheUK, helas. I've missed so much. Roll on Mark Dinning et all

  • classic

  • Dicky Lee, you still got it . It is obvious that he put his heart and soul in his music. A great talent.

  • He messed up the last verse LOL..... It should be "It May Not Be Right, But I'll Join You Tonight... Patches I'm Coming To Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • @SEVFEST I noticed that too!

  • i love this song...

  • larry, black also does the countrys family reunion shows and he has , or had another programme called larrys country diner where guest artists , mostly country come to perform and talk about their careers

  • Dickey was the king of the tear jerkers. It was a period where, with VietNam looming, the tear jerkers hit us as much as great rock n roll. What a time in music.

  • awesome these guys sure still have what it takes i can see larry black there

  • @musicmaker1999

You are right, it is Larry Black. He was the host of the show. Most people email asking who that big guy is, since he was not one of the performers.

  • wow----I have goosebumps!

  • I love this song Patches, I actually like this one, alot.. I just brings me back, to a great time in life..

  • I loved this song, when I was a little boy.

  • great

  • is this a one.hit wonder?

  • @vuotopiuscuro

Not in my view. Dickey Lee recorded many songs, including some other very well-known ones like "I Saw Linda Yesterday" "Laurie (Strange Things Happen)" and "9,999,999 Tears."

  • @DooWopJoe

didn't bobby vee have more success with the songs U're mentioning..

thanks 4 Ur comment, i appreciate it

  • @vuotopiuscuro

No, Bobby Vee never recorded any of these songs (to the best of my knowledge--I have a lot of Bobby's recordings). He did a song called "Laurie", but that is a very different song than the one by Dickey Lee.

  • @DooWopJoe

    ok.

    i'll tell if i C something.

  • @vuotopiuscuro There were just a few rock hits for Dicky Lee. He made most of his money doing Country-western songs

  • @vuotopiuscuro No Dicky has had several hits in the 60's. He wrote Ashes of Love &She thinks I still care... Those 2 songs disqualiifes him for the one hit wonder tag:). Never ending song of love for you...I forgot that one it was also Dicky Lee

  • @vuotopiuscuro

Dickey Lee has written many excellent and award-winning songs (including "Keeper of the Stars") and also had the best version, in my opinion, of "Rocky" (not, by all means, to be confused with the movie) in 1975. His was the country chart-topper, and Austin Roberts had it on the pop charts at the same time.

  • Still brings a lump into my throat for my father (draconian old git) disallowed me from having anything to do with - let alone dating an astronomically beautiful Greek girl ...

  • If only we could all get together in 1 Very Very Big Club

  • so nice, reminissing and such thing, i liek this

  • Gary Paxton went on to be a big producer in the Christian music market and worked for Tammy Faye Bakker on the PTL Club. I also think he had something to do with the 'Monster Mash.'

  • @LShackley Right you are, Gary produced "Monster Mash" and many others including "Sweet Pea" by Tommy Roe and "Cherish" by the Association."

  • @LShackley I wonder why Dickey lee changed the last verse in this song of Patches diff. from original

  • Dickey Lee...........................................you still have that wonderful way with your voice

this brings back a thousand memories of listening to this song way back when. Thank you for posting this

  • Thank you so much, keep up the good work love this stuff brings back memories

  • who is in the back row with long hair

  • @Daveyhunter1

That is Gary S. Paxton. He was Skip in Skip and Flip, who recorded "It Was I" and "Cherry Pie." He also was the main guy in the Hollywood Argyles, who did "Alley Oop." Gary was also producer on many big hits for a number of artists.

  • hey bec i found the original singer...i love this song..he also sang tell laura i love her..

  • @amdufour

Dickey Lee did have a version of "Tell Laura I Love Her", but the hit version was by Ray Peterson.

  • i love this song and singer.i just heard it for the first time.i sometimes go back in years and listen to songs and singers .Some times im amazed of the results .This one is great .I love it .

  • tears thats all i can say is tears.. that man has a voice like no other!

  • This is good, but so sad at the same time. I don't know why Patches couldn't be married to a good fellow. These songs make me think about the purpose of human relationships. If you love her, marry her and take care of her!

  • @john44122 There was a time when being from the wrong side of town mattered. I agree, money or the lack there of should not be an issue when it comes to love. Few had the courage to rock the boat despite family disapproval.

  • I commented one night about 2 months ago, about this video. Unfortunately I had it mixed up with another version of Patches. I'll ask again, is that Jimmy Fortune in the audience? I do so enjoy this song, brings me right back to 8th Grade.

  • @wisvoyeur

No, Jimmy Fortune is not in the audience. If you are referring to the man sitting on the left end (next to Dickie Lee, who is singing), that is the late Gene Hughes, lead singer of the Casinos (biggest hit was "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye").

  • it must be little odd for u if i say i was born on 1988 to like this song..but i like this song n it is wnderful songs..hehehe

  • still a great song.... Great videos.........

  • Does anyone know the history behind that song. I remember it as a kid. It was such a sad song.

  • Does anyone know where I can get this on DVD or VHS?

  • that woman in the black behind him is beautiful

  • that woman behind him in the black with the shorter black hair is beautiful, love this song

  • I love this song...apparently my parents used to sing it to me when I was rather small.

  • DooWopJoe thanks a mil for your work

  • Ah Patches ... teenage love ... teenage sorrow ... Thanks for the memories

  • My mother still has this song and other songs he sings on a vinyl album =) He sang a LOT of good songs on it too. Of all the ones on the album, my favorite was always Ebony Eyes.

  • I am named after this song! Patches Auman

  • Hard to believe that Dickey sang this song clear back in 1962, my junior year in high school. From high school up through retirement, this is still one of my favorites, and Dickey Lee sings it just as well today as he did back then. Thanks so much for sharing this classic song of the 60s, a era of many great songs and singers.

  • Gosh I adore this song so much. (:

  • What a great song and sure is nice to see Dickey Lee here. I bought the 45 of this.

  • ok this is the best guy in the world my grandfather

  • ½ those people probably had no idea what this song was.

  • @NightRanger77

Do you meant the people in the audience of this video? If so, you could not be more wrong. All the people there are well-known singers and musicians. I have videos from 25 or more of them from this show on YouTube.

  • ah no. It just looked like the people were a bit lost as to what he was singing, granted is not as popular today as it was back then. And it didnt survive time very well like something The Beatles did. You'd be hard pressed today to find a lot of people who actually know of or listen to this besides people from that time period

  • A neighbor just told my father

He said"a boy by the name of Patches has been found

Floating face down in that dirty old river

Which bflows by the coal yards

    In old shanty toen

    Patches ,what amI to do

I'm still going to love you

    It may not look right

    But I'm joining you tonight

Patches I can't get over you

  • Nice job, Freyja. This song (with your lyrics) would be well-suited for a female singer.

  • Every night I cry when I think of the shanty

And my Gorgeous patches there waiting by the door

He doesn't know that it's impossible for me

    to come and see him

Patches must think that i don't love him any more

  • Patches what Am i TO Do I'll always love you But A Boy from that place

    Will bring me disgrace

No one will allow me to love you

  • We planned to marry when April brought spring

Patches couldn't wait to make me his bride

I don't see how that ever will happen

    My parents they said"No ! "

    And I'm heart broken inside

  • Down by the river which flows by the coal yards

There stands houses with tehir shutters which are falling down

There lives a boy that everyone calls patches

Patches my sweet heart of old shanty town

  • i like his version of " ashes of love"

  • Oh,I don't know about this being his best known hit,he had a big one in 1976 called "9,999,999 Tears".

  • Yes, Banner, I think "Patches" is definitely his best-known song--not his best, but best-known. I loved "9,999,999 Tears" and found that song to be one I could not get out of my head! I like it much more than "Patches", and also prefer "I Saw Linda Yesterday" to "Patches", but still feel that most people would name the latter as the song he is known by.

  • Ahh Dickey, one of my top artist, loved when he did doo wop! Another fine post Joe, thanks again!

  • Love it! What year is this?

  • See my info to top right of video. It was 1999.

  • He's still as adorable as ever!

  • I've written lyrics for a female version of Patches...Would anyone like to read them?

  • Sure, post them!

  • @DooWopJoe I'd have to type them up first

    I love this song

  • im now 31 my name is Patches Loren Fox

  • cute name patches... you must have been named after the song

  • i was named after this song

  • This song always made me tear up!Thank for the tears anyway.

  • wow, just takes you back 40+ years...thank you for posting.

  • @camrod94 this was my wee best friend song she died and i miss her so much

  • I remember hearing this song when I was a little girl and crying every time I heard it. I thought it was a true story and the girl he loved had truely died...and that this boy singing loved her so much that he was going to join her in the river.

I thought "Patches" was a beautiful name for a girl..

  • After 37 years, he actually sounds better.

  • Great! Thanks for this one!
