Abaut Jarlaxles fighting style, its probaly mutch like the normal drow 2 weapon offensive style. The swashbuckling style, he only used in 1 fight to lure his enemys in closer.

Anyway, i hope Salvatore writes a series abaut Zaknafein and Jarlaxle in the early days :)

Jarlaxle and Zaknafein were friends until Jarlaxle betrayed Zaknafein witch made him bitter and hatefull ageinst drow (even more than he was before). Jarlaxle mentions that he did beat zaknafein once, tho it was more luck than skill (i suspect he cheated a bit :p). I would assume Jarlaxle is araund Entreris level, a perfect fighter, who still lacks the last to be on the same page as drizzt and zaknafein.

I remember Jarlaxle as being depicted as a swashbuckling fighter by Entreri, when he did join the melee.

Anyway, I've never seen Jarlaxle's strength his skill in combat. Though he is no doubt depicted as a skilled fighter, what makes him powerful (except for powerful allies) is his magic items. When Salvatore wrote the books, if Jarlaxle was in a problematic situation, Sal would probably just open his book on D&D treasures and pick whatever would aid Jarlaxle. He's got everything it seems.

I know that they were supposedly equal, but don't remember reading them being rivals. It doesn't surprise me much, but they are also stated as having been somewhat like "friends" by Jarlaxle. Which book is this in?

Zak and Jarlaxe were friends. it's the Weaponmaster of baenre and Zak that were rivals. Also, Jarlaxe's skill in fighting lied in his mastery of the double sword style. He used Swashbuckling with minor enemies, however, to toy with them. (Reference : The Siege of Darkness)

They weren't exactly friends, the books say they were the closest to a friend since both had somewhat managed to survive(and find an important "job") in a community that wasn't suited for them (for people who didn't really enjoy the murderous killing attitude of drows) so it was mostly some kind of respect other than friendship.

@nogarddragonkin, Jarlaxle was Zaknefain's friend, you are thinking of Dantrag Baenre, House Baenre's weaponmaster until he was defeated by Drizzt in The Starless Night. Dantrag was believed to be Zaknefein's equal in combat. Also, Jarlaxle mentions at one point in Sellswords that Zaknefain believed that Jarlaxle and himself were equals, but that was due to a lucky moment during one of their fights.
