@pab107blah . Mike Casswell mostly uses vintage Valley Arts guitars like Lukather and Carlton used to, and his orange one in this demo definitely has EMGs in.
i own the box vt50 and i have to say i really hate it the clean isn't too bad but the distortion sounds like its missing something which drives me insane
@Gingerlord01 Yes it is a very good amp, the sound is very convincing for a hybrid ampli and it is powerful, on the other hand the series of Vox advtxl is more aggressive than the other vox. The price(prize) is very reasonable also =)
@MrSeb92100 ok, i mean, i was only looking to spend around 150 pounds or so, so this amp would be ideal if liked it, however, im also just starting my collection of pedals, shoukd i save up for this or get all my pedals first? i already use a laney kb80??
you are the gearmandude of amps. Only problem is im more impressed with your playing than the amp. If you just got it out of the box then you have a prophetic ability to match your playing with the sound. Hahahah.
ive got that amp!!!!! it s truly amazing ...you can play anything with it !!! the only problem is that it hasnt the clean sound of the of a normal amp....thats not matter for me...as i play rock-heavy metal....
man i so want this amp all the other ways i have heard this amp played is just like metal riffs its refreshing to hear this guy put it through its paces
two storable presets. that's hilarious. one of the big pros of a modelling amp would be dozens of sounds at a foot-click. that's really a turn off. might as well buy a small all tube amp from a not so famous brand.
by the way: cool use of the whammy at around 3:40... that inspired me.
I had the AD120VTH model and, as the owner of seven tube amps, I was blown away at how realistic it felt, not just how it sounded. The overdrive and gain stage had that "third layer" of sound that only tube amps get, and it cleaned up when you rolled back your volume, without going muffled on you like most solid state amps do.
Unfortunately, though, they aren't built for the road. Even my top of the VT line head didn't last a year of constant gigging before developing issues.
I used to own one and it was dead out of the box. Returned it. A year later checked out the VT amps. And I believe the Valvetronix amps to have that blanket cover the speaker affect. Plus, they are so overly dark voiced. It is real easy to tell when you plug into a Fender practice amp. I think the Fender Super Champ has alot better distortion sound. Too bad as I think the Valvetronix effects sound great, just that the distortion is too overly dark no matter how I adjust it.
PS, the Vox VT's are also fantastic for recording. They blow away any software modeling I've used. Note that you do lose the tube output section when going line out, but I just re-amp the recorded tracks using cabinet impulses. RedWirez and Recabinet amazingly useful for this. I've just finished a session with 6 guitar layers, and the Vox, plus cab impulses let me get exactly the sound I was hearing in my head for the project. (I haven't heard voices yet though...)
I have the VT30 version of this and I totally love it. (Hi Voxman :) It does sound and feel like the real thing, I don't even consider it "digital" anymore because it's so responsive to dynamics and every little setting of your guitars' volume control.
Fantastic, keeper amp. It covers everything. You can get a very deep grind out of it, while still retaining a clear top end bell. The mark of a fine (and expensive) tube amp.
Hi Michael. Great vid & playing - just linked this to the forum. Thought I'd just explain that the Valvetronix are hybrids rather than pure modeling amps. The tube is actually in the power-amp section, NOT the pre-amp gain section (which is pure modelling) & that's why it sounds/feels much more like an all-valve amp, especially as you crank it. Raising the Master Volume pushes the valve, and by lowering the power selector you can do this at low volumes too. Rich ('Voxman' at Valvetronix . net)
Hi Voxman i could not agree more this is not just an other modeling amp. I own a Fender superchamp xd also and i have to say it does not have the touch sensitivity of the the Vox. This little amp really does give you the feeling of playing an all vave amp for very little money.
Would someone please tell me if they are still making these?
I am having a really hard time finding them, musicians friend does not have them, and I have read some comments that they don't make them anymore! I would love to get this amp.
The XL range are no longer made, although if you look around you may find some 'new old stock' around - otherwise it's just a case of trying to find one used on e-bay etc. The XL's were brought out primarily to meet the demands of US customers, but unfortunately it didn't achieve the overall sales that Vox was hoping for, and as fhs said, both the original 'chrome' ADxxVT's & the XL's are now superceeded by the new VT's that offer more 'metal' tones than the chromes, but less than the XL's.
Thanks for the help, i'm stuck between something like this or finding a way to get a real tube amp such as the engl powerball or the splawn nitro down to bedroom level, any advice? thanks!
No I have not! Just what I've seen on youtube, they look like great little amps, but it is so hard to get an idea about the real tone from the amp from youtube. The money is not an issue at all, all I am really concerned about is the volume and the tone. I know the VT's have a built in attenuator, but will I get that high gain, harmonic rich, tone from the VT? Like I would from a true tube amp? Also will attenuating the a true tube amp to that low of a volume kill the tone of the amp anyway?
ESP, everyone has different opinions, needs, tastes etc so there's honestly just no point in asking these questions. The ONLY way you're going to find the right amp for you is to invest time & sit down to play as many different amps as you can. It's as much about the feel as well as the tone, & no video can tell you that. Good hunting & good luck. Rich
The way he was talking it doesn't seem like he knows how to use the bypass for the effects... lol
I've played on an AD15VT and it's not harsh at ALL, in fact, I wish it was a little less smooth at times, when I really want some crunch, the XL is supposed to be able to get that crunch.

Would like to hear Michael's opinion of the newer VT30.
I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to a 30watt all valve amp. This seems to do the business. Excellent playing btw.

You'll need a hot-plate attenuator, or a Marshall power-brake. Reportedly, there's less tonal loss with the latter. But have you tried the new VT's?
