He got the nickname grampa because even when he was young people would say his voice sounded like an old grampa....and it just stuck and made him famous :):)
Grandpa Jones has a relitave named Phillip Steinmetz who does all the old songs and plays clawhammer style,he is very good.He lives in Waverly ,Tn and plays some on RFD-TV.
Thank for sharing this video, bloodboiler666. Grandpa Jones was among the greatest American banjo player of all times. His frailing/rappin' style was phenomenal. As a child, I recall watching Grandpa on the ol' Philco television set playing and singing old time country and gospel music songs. Sigh! Those were the days.
Grandpa did not play clawhammer style. He played the older style "frailing" or as he called it "rapping". Earl Scruggs is famous for his clawhammer style.
Wrong. Clawhammer, Rapping, and Frailing are all basically the same thing, and Grandpa Jones did play clawhammer. Ear Scruggs is famous for his 3 finger Bluegrass or "Scruggs" style of playing.
You'll notice the great "clawhammer" players prefered the Vega banjos over the Gibsons. One of the best clawhammer players of today is Uncle Steve Crockett from upstate New York!
theres a few grandpa jones songs on you tube now.just do a search for him.i love the way he really belts out the words.whats the banjo like to learn?easier than the guitar or harder?
if you search in amazon dot com, theres a grandpa jones Cd with a short sample of old blue on it.I tried to link to it,but i think it was rejected.Harry dean stanton sings a version on Kellys Heroes.
Unbelievable! Grandpa Jones was one fine clawhammer banjo player and videos, even recordings, of him playing without steel or electric guitars in the background are rare as hen`s teeth. If you have more, PLEASE upload them.

Grandpa's real name was Louis Marshall Jones. My dad played music with him back in the 60s and says he was a great feller to get around.
