@monkeyandtheEngineer I love the acoustic version of this song from "The Reckoning", but really replied just to tell you, GREAT screen name. Very subtle, the opposite of something like..."SunshineDaydreamBobbysGirl", or "ScarlettBegonis4Jerry"
God damn you REM. I am supposed to be doing homework, but keep linking off to one awesome video after another. Oh well, awesome band, and I'm happy they're still kickin.
whoEVER understood where irony leads!? Ironically, brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed precedes Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy? beyond R.E.M. lies - neo-Shakespearean tragedy caught in a dream beyond restless eyes but then... This One Goes Out to ... FIIIIRE!!!!!!! That was epic poetry, vis-a-vis "don't fuck with me"
vickyboi; yeah; & Elton John's straight, and Rod Stewart, and Rock Hudson, and George Bush: not! Duh! All queers, boi! (But of them all Bush is the kinkiest; one of the most notorious sodomites in the history of Skull & Bones. Explains Iraq: closet-homos are the most disturbed, and violent of men)...

yes, they're awesome live but even though I chastised the homophobes below, Mike is very stingy, and in this vid you want to see him throw his sunglasses, and even his coat to the crowd, right? He can certainly afford to, but he never does; and this vid is bullshit too, because by this time Mike was no longer even bi, he was only fucking men, but he seems to be coming on to women in the audience, turning them on, which is absurd & fraudulent: cheap & fraudulent video, yet I still love REM!
jesus you kids quit this gay-bashing shit; when you grow up, when you acquire more than three brain cells, you will realize that to be human is not sexual or physical (I was both once, and as a 6'2 Irish-Indian Recon Marine I was way fuckin better at it than you; now I'm just a broke-dick medically-retired Marine) to be really human is spiritual, intellectual; there never has been a more spiritual & intellectual band than REM; best thing from the South since Lynyrd Skynyrd.
@billsurf101 goddamn right what he does in his own time is his business...but looks like your here watching so shut the fuck up....... what an idiot....
I wonder how many people know the history behind the title of the song??? Guess??? Give up??? ok...one day Dan Rather (news anchor for CBS evening news at the time) was walking down a street in New York City. A lunatic ran up to Rather, and screemed "whats the frequency kenneth" and ran off. And thus, the rest is history.
@billsurf101 yeah actually the guy beat him up a lil bit too, as he repeatedly yelled that..... he was convinced CBS was beaming signals into his brain and felt the key to blocking them was learning the frequency. As Hunter Thompson said, "Let's face it: most people in this country are mentally ill"...lol
Every R.E.M. album from Green onwards, in retrospect, seems to gives clues as to future directions of the band. Green's 'Turn You Inside Out' would have fitted in quite well on Monster. Monster is like the culmination and complete expansion of a few threads throughout their previous few albums.
songs suggested that R.E.M. might be happy turning even more towards nostalgia and unfortunately that could have meant stagnation. Thankfully, Monster blew every preconception away. I'd consider saying that it's their most accomplished album because it is uncompromising, dark and fresh. For instance, 'I don't sleep I dream' is a magical, darkly sexual song. 'Tongue' is as good as any classic 60s song. 'Circus Envy' has some beautiful sound effects. It's so rich about identity, image, desire.
'What the frequency kenneth' is the first song on R.E.M's 1994 album Monster. It is probably one of the best about turns (seemingly, although not actually entirely as 'Automatic' did have some rock and some weird moments too) that there has ever been in rock music. To put this in context, the last song from their previous album, Automatic for the people, had been 'Find the river'. It was a popular album (although it sold really no more than Out of Time or Monster in the end) but the closing 2

An attack on CBS anchor Dan Rather moved R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, who said of the incident, " It remains the premier unsolved American surrealist act of the 20th century. It's a misunderstanding that was scarily random, media hyped and just plain bizarre. The attack inspired the 1994 R.E.M. hit "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"....
One night in October 1986, Rather was walking down a Manhattan street when he was punched from behind and thrown to the ground. His assailant kicked and beat him while repeating, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" ....
In 1997, based on a tip from a psychiatrist, Rather's attacker was identified as William Tager. According to the psychiatrist, Tager, who was currently serving time for killing an NBC stagehand, blamed news media for beaming signals into his head, and thought if he could just find out the correct frequency, he could block those signals that were constantly assailing him.
yeah, who they sleep with or if they even do really doesn't affect me. I mean it would if say, Janet Jackson or somebody chose me, but hey-it ain't gonna happen.

omg....that is so funny. I was living in NY when Dan Rather was attacked by some total loon who said (obviously at random..) "WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY, KENNETH?"
It appeard on the national news...the whole thing so bizarro...and this is the genesis of the song! (and why Dan Rather, former news anchor of CBS appears on the stage with REM in the other video..)
I wonder if crazy nutter knows he helped pen a great song....

Song's title alludes to Daniel Clowes' graphic novel/comic "Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron", which contained the line.
No, it didn't make any sense in that context either. It was uttered by a psychopath without explanation.
