  • Please, R.E.M: COME. BACK. !!!

  • was a truly phenomenal show! was there!!

  • "WITHDRAWL IN DISGUST IS NOT THE SAME AS APATHY..."

  • What IF they announce a show??

  • The guy is talented, it's a hard song to sing with a band. Who cares about his sexual preferences? Only redneck shits without a pot to pee in.

  • Hayseed rhymes with inbreed. Coincidence? I think not.

  • Hayseed rhymes with inbreed. Coincidence? I think not.

  • Michael's voice sounds so hoarse

  • Michael is a homo sapien

  • look at the fat guy at :31 looks like a loser pizza eatting perv.

  • who else is named Kenneth and thinks its awesome that theres a song about u? :D

  • rock n roll........

  • @monkeyandtheEngineer I love the acoustic version of this song from "The Reckoning", but really replied just to tell you, GREAT screen name. Very subtle, the opposite of something like..."SunshineDaydreamBobbysGirl", or "ScarlettBegonis4Jerry"

  • The Germans @ 0:31 have no idea what he's saying.

  • G.D. I love this song.

  • Damn Damn good

  • What's up with the orange eyebrows? This song rocks!

  • with all the money that fag has, youd think he'd get a tooth implant! i wonder if someones cock knocked it out!!!!????

  • @hayseed6969 I sincerely hope some fag knocks your tooth out.

  • I like this song, but if I was going into the middle east, I would want some better armor than just expectations.

  • @michaelcaboose1 well said

  • One of the best songs ever....from anyone. I hope you don't mind, I used it to make a guitar cover video. Many thanks to you, AEB.

  • its a game of spot kurt kobains guitar, oh wait found it!

  • kkk

  • God damn you REM. I am supposed to be doing homework, but keep linking off to one awesome video after another. Oh well, awesome band, and I'm happy they're still kickin.

  • Peter Buck is THE best !

  • these guys rock my fav song by them is Cuyahoga about my home river

  • @ohiocanalgirl Cleveland wooo!!

  • where was that? Looks like Dublin to me.

  • whoEVER understood where irony leads!? Ironically, brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed precedes Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy? beyond R.E.M. lies - neo-Shakespearean tragedy caught in a dream beyond restless eyes but then... This One Goes Out to ... FIIIIRE!!!!!!! That was epic poetry, vis-a-vis "don't fuck with me"
  • these guys can rock.

  • 本当にすごい なああ

  • Probably the song that runned the most in my head since...1995!

  • 7 people understand the frequency...

  • great...them were the days:)

  • my name is kenneth...

  • Love this song

  • vickyboi; yeah; & Elton John's straight, and Rod Stewart, and Rock Hudson, and George Bush: not! Duh! All queers, boi! (But of them all Bush is the kinkiest; one of the most notorious sodomites in the history of Skull & Bones. Explains Iraq: closet-homos are the most disturbed, and violent of men)...

    I know you're a troll but I enjoyed posting this anyway, fag-baiter!

  • i dont understand the frequency either

  • @lostnalone the frequency is an inner one...the vibration on this web page will help you to find it .forget your name, forget the world, forget the peolpe....just close your eyes!!!...

  • Drummer is playing Paiste cymbals- nice!

  • since when is he gay?

  • what the fk? Gay never even came to mind and I have been watching REM since they were a garage band, 1985

  • who cares if he`s gay. his sexuality is his own business.

but man, can he belt out a tune!!!!!!!

  • ...ahhh the good old days

  • I've always thought REM was pretty good, but they're ten times better live, wow

  • I remember when i just heard this group for the first time in the 90's... they still kick ass. You have to admit... those who knows music, knows that this group rocks!!!

  • yes, they're awesome live but even though I chastised the homophobes below, Mike is very stingy, and in this vid you want to see him throw his sunglasses, and even his coat to the crowd, right? He can certainly afford to, but he never does; and this vid is bullshit too, because by this time Mike was no longer even bi, he was only fucking men, but he seems to be coming on to women in the audience, turning them on, which is absurd & fraudulent: cheap & fraudulent video, yet I still love REM!

  • They're kick-ass live.

  • Michael Stipe is the Keith Haring of rock.

  • Is that Mitch Easter on the second guitar?

  • jesus you kids quit this gay-bashing shit; when you grow up, when you acquire more than three brain cells, you will realize that to be human is not sexual or physical (I was both once, and as a 6'2 Irish-Indian Recon Marine I was way fuckin better at it than you; now I'm just a broke-dick medically-retired Marine) to be really human is spiritual, intellectual; there never has been a more spiritual & intellectual band than REM; best thing from the South since Lynyrd Skynyrd.

  • Monster from REM...probably the album that influenced the most my youth.

    Oh 1995, the memories.

  • Man, what an awesome band. The 90's rocked. There were so many diverse bands but they were all so good. REM is right around the top

  • I keep waiting for a TV anchor to be assaulted in manner that inspires me to write a song, but since Rather; it's been a cold spell.

  • Who give a fuck if someones gay or not????? Great music is great music....!

  • @billsurf101 ...exactly!

  • @billsurf101 goddamn right what he does in his own time is his business...but looks like your here watching so shut the fuck up....... what an idiot....

  • Some bands suck live..... these guys obviously dont !!!

  • I wonder how many people know the history behind the title of the song??? Guess??? Give up??? ok...one day Dan Rather (news anchor for CBS evening news at the time) was walking down a street in New York City. A lunatic ran up to Rather, and screemed "whats the frequency kenneth" and ran off. And thus, the rest is history.

  • @billsurf101 yeah actually the guy beat him up a lil bit too, as he repeatedly yelled that..... he was convinced CBS was beaming signals into his brain and felt the key to blocking them was learning the frequency. As Hunter Thompson said, "Let's face it: most people in this country are mentally ill"...lol

  • @billsurf101 Not only did he scream "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?!" at Rather, but he then punched him in the face.

  • I wonder how many people know the basis for the Title??? hmmmm??? I do! awesome song!

  • take deep breath think of someone u like andpress f10 five times send this to 5 youtube videos then look at ur background

  • Wo - a great version, and actually much better than the studio version. The song really comes to life in this clip, and Stipe really performs it!!

  • Ive nailed the exact guitar tone on the original. Fender MIM strat, Fender Bullet amp, Digitech EX7 effects pedal. PM me if you want the settings.

    Awesome song :)

  • great song!!!!!

  • reminds me of my old neighbor...the paperboy...Kenny, whats up kenny?

  • What's the frequency Dan? *snicker* Watermelloned screen ^_-

  • The Zionist World Is Nigh!

  • Every R.E.M. album from Green onwards, in retrospect, seems to gives clues as to future directions of the band. Green's 'Turn You Inside Out' would have fitted in quite well on Monster. Monster is like the culmination and complete expansion of a few threads throughout their previous few albums.

  • songs suggested that R.E.M. might be happy turning even more towards nostalgia and unfortunately that could have meant stagnation. Thankfully, Monster blew every preconception away. I'd consider saying that it's their most accomplished album because it is uncompromising, dark and fresh. For instance, 'I don't sleep I dream' is a magical, darkly sexual song. 'Tongue' is as good as any classic 60s song. 'Circus Envy' has some beautiful sound effects. It's so rich about identity, image, desire.

  • 'What the frequency kenneth' is the first song on R.E.M's 1994 album Monster. It is probably one of the best about turns (seemingly, although not actually entirely as 'Automatic' did have some rock and some weird moments too) that there has ever been in rock music. To put this in context, the last song from their previous album, Automatic for the people, had been 'Find the river'. It was a popular album (although it sold really no more than Out of Time or Monster in the end) but the closing 2

  • 69 MegaTits

  • <3 <3 Greatest song!! What I wouldn't give to see REM live!!

  • And yet, "irony is the shackles of youth." ^_-

  • whats the freq. obama>?

  • I once tried to convince someone that this song was about Kenneth Livingstone!

  • my eyebrows actually look like that

  • An attack on CBS anchor Dan Rather moved R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, who said of the incident, " It remains the premier unsolved American surrealist act of the 20th century. It's a misunderstanding that was scarily random, media hyped and just plain bizarre. The attack inspired the 1994 R.E.M. hit "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"....

  • One night in October 1986, Rather was walking down a Manhattan street when he was punched from behind and thrown to the ground. His assailant kicked and beat him while repeating, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" ....

  • Great song, and what is so bad with the title^^ The story behind the song is just a little bit curious.....

  • In 1997, based on a tip from a psychiatrist, Rather's attacker was identified as William Tager. According to the psychiatrist, Tager, who was currently serving time for killing an NBC stagehand, blamed news media for beaming signals into his head, and thought if he could just find out the correct frequency, he could block those signals that were constantly assailing him.

  • What kind of special effect use the guitar?

  • 0:46

Hmm.. The good old 'Buck Kick'.

Legend has it, it can take out a giraffe.

  • Good song. Silly Title.

  • gay or not he can sing better than you

  • @grwn1982 He's bi.

  • yeah, who they sleep with or if they even do really doesn't affect me. I mean it would if say, Janet Jackson or somebody chose me, but hey-it ain't gonna happen.

  • I like how he says, "Tonight it's you and me and him and him." ...but there's like a drummer and keyboardest who just get the shaft, like they aren't even there, lol.

  • this song makes me want to beat the shit out of dan rather , again

  • @apinst are u fucking serious?

  • @Redimade Yeah Ed was around long before he founded Live in 1980. He was in that progressive rock side project with Bobby Lamm and Bryan Adams in the summer of '69. He has much more talent than Michael Stipe. REM only started in 1994 to make money from grunge, and was a total ripoff of Live.

  • i hope you realize that rem started in 1983

  • 1980, actually. Also they had their first EP and single out in 1982.

  • you cant be serious

  • @redchief24

Bryan Adams and Bobby Lamm in 1969? It's obvious that dumbass who posted it was just doing a lousy job at trying to make fun of REM and piss people off. :)

Live is still good though. They did sound like REM at the beginning, and Michael Stipe is given credit in the liner notes for "Throwing Copper"

  • Michael Stipe is the father of my gay child.....ask away

  • @themooddisorders mine too

  • so... what IS the frequency?

  • about 82.5 rpms

  • Michael Stipe reminds me of Gord Downie.

  • Comment removed

  • Gord Downie isn't fit to wipe Stipe's ass!

  • Downie blows his ass away. REM has about 15 solid tracks, the Hip come away with 30+.

  • no tienes ni puta idea

  • muy buena cancion en directo :)

  • Man that looks like a GREAT place to be!!!

  • I've been there

  • I mean at that particular moment...

  • check out Peter Buck's moves at 0.46, quality.

  • Comment removed

  • i was talking about rem

  • wanker!!

  • poor you

  • whats with the orange unibrow @2:23????

  • fuck that, I hope when I'm 30 I look like Stipe!

  • haha, yeah I can see what you're saying, he does look old for a rock singer.

But really, this is a great live version of an excellent song, so don't worry about it too much.

  • lol what a ham.

  • When do you think that Michael Stipe will consider himself too old for his job?

  • When he's not having fun anymore.

  • I want what he's on

  • Heroin?

    No you don't. :(

  • Yeah you're right, nevermind.

  • What's the fucking frequency Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush???? hmmmm?? what what what is it!!!! I know... but I am no telling!!!

  • :) stipe, what a legend

  • I do not agree with alot of rems agenda, but credit is due and stipe is a musical genius, love there songs agree or not,and this song is about the assault on charlie gibson,so people aggree with stipe or not look up the meaning behind his songs he is an awsome musician rock on

  • There is nothing like the sound of a cranked Les Paul guitar outside!

  • are you high or am i low? whats the frequency ken?

  • Fantastic song, thanks.

  • one of the greatest rock songs of all time ...

  • Well, then kindly fuck off, you don't belong here. Stipe is a god of alternative rock, and you know it. His voice is not gay, and a lot of people jump on stage the same damn way he does.

  • This song should be dedicated to ABC's Charlie Gibson for being such an unbelievable dolt when he was interviewed on a radio show 9/15/09 and he was asked about the ACORN scandal. He said he knew nothing about it!

    "Hey Charlie . . . quick -- what's your first name?"

    'Uhhhhhhh . . . "

  • Actually, this song was inspired by an assault on Dan Rather.

  • Stipe dosent usually swear at all but it adds to the songs shear genius. What a riff. Blows me every time i hear it!

  • I like this solo better than the recording.

  • you are all stupid, and i'm a kenneth too. wow, it doesnt matter. its the hertz to worry about

  • I seen these guys in a dive bar in Savanah,GA in the early 80's and back then, their sound SUCKED!!(They were before their time and their material was yuk)I'm a fan now but that night I seen them, I walked out...is was horrible.

  • omg....that is so funny. I was living in NY when Dan Rather was attacked by some total loon who said (obviously at random..) "WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY, KENNETH?"

It appeard on the national news...the whole thing so bizarro...and this is the genesis of the song! (and why Dan Rather, former news anchor of CBS appears on the stage with REM in the other video..)

I wonder if crazy nutter knows he helped pen a great song....

  • Same as that but the guy who attacked rathner said KENNETH WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY?

  • great sound on this 1 thx

  • We thought it was uttered by the Secret Service when Reagan got shot?

  • Kenneth told me it is once a day but sometimes more on weekends.

  • Song's title alludes to Daniel Clowes' graphic novel/comic "Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron", which contained the line.

No, it didn't make any sense in that context either. It was uttered by a psychopath without explanation.

  • The answer is simple. It's 98 Hz

  • My hamster's name is Kenneth ....

  • whats his frequency?

  • my real name is kenneth no lie

  • So?

Mine is too, but who cares?

  • I do. What's the frequency?

  • I'd tell you but it hertz.

  • Well played rommecheng!

  • that... my friend merits a roflcopter... soi soi soi soi

  • I'm Kenneth and so is my wife.

  • hahahah

  • whats your frequency kenneth?

  • nah

some one assaulted the person who wrote this song asking him all the time:

    "what's the frequency kenneth?"

  • actually, it was CBS Anchor Dan Rather that was assaulted by two dudes who kept on asking, "Kenneth, what's the frequency."

  • me encanta esta cancion

sobre todo por como va en el bajo

    REM rulez!!!
