My macbook air display hinges cracked! Can you tell me how expensive it is to replace the hinges? I heard that the screen may need to be replaced also.
Is being able to open the lid with one finger really more important than knowing the hinge was made sturdy enough to not open/close when shaken (as other reviewers are saying it does)?? Is it more important than the security that would come with knowing it won't loosen over time (as the hinges of some models in my local Apple Store seem to be doing)?
@astrobill68 Reasonable point. A friend of mine reports that the hinge of his 11-inch MBA has significantly more friction than mine. When he reaches 90 degrees when opening the display the keyboard-part of the case starts tilting upwards. So there seems to be quite some tolerance in manufacturing, which generally isn't particularly desirable.
I guess it will have to prove itself over time. If my display stays the way it is I'll remain happy. I just hope it doesn't deteriorate over time.
@iFutrie It depends on what you want to do with it. There are ways to increase screen real estate (smaller fonts in Finder, move the Dock to the side and set it to auto-hide, etc.), but I'd say for everything but video or image editing or web or graphic design it's sufficient. The portability and speed are definitely worth the trade-off.
@funnyguy7557 Love the 11-inch. It's so tiny, but still highly usable especially due to the full-size keyboard. It's also very snappy, mostly due to the flash memory instead of a spinning hard drive.
It's definitely no netbook and it's not cheap. If anything I'd compare it to some of the sub-notebooks Sony sells (or sold, I'm not up-to-date with there product line).

The dent below the trackpad that allows you to open the lid actually fits perfectly with an iPhone 4

Let's just hope it doesn't loose up or crack over time, just like the previous generation did...
