  • what reload are you useing?im breaking mine in right now.ive fired 5 shots so far.shoot clean shoot clean ect.5 times.now im on the first 3 shot and clean.that 3 shot was a 1 1/8 at 100 yrds.this was off a leadsled.pretty piss poor if you ask me.ammo was 175 black hills match.

  • Some nice groups, all the holes are touching. Its a nice feeling to have one ragged hole in the target.

That said, I prefer 200 yards as a min distance and at least 5 shot groups. The more bullets you send into a group, the better picture you will get of how precise a rifle actually is.

I do most of my load testing with 7-10 shot groups at 200-600 yards depending what I want out of the round.

  • a submoa gun will shoot submoa at any distance it was designed for. Keep in mind that 4 inches at 1k yards is submoa for example. I agree that 7-10 shots is statistically more representative of the capability of the rifle.

  • No disrespect, Honest question : how many groups have you actually measured beyond 300?

Groupings at range are not linear. I.E. a 1/2" group at 100 yards will not give you a 3" group at 600 yards.

Look at what the benchrest shooter are capable of...consistent 4" groups at 1000 yards, but most of those guns will shoot 0.100" or less at 100 yards.

All mistakes/errors get amplified as the range extends. Read Brian Litz book on applied ballistics. It does a good job of explaining this.

  • I'm still fairly new to this reloading and precision shooting sport, so anything I have to say is obviousely up for debate!

However, the sum of my experience shows me that 3 shot groups are a waste of time, 5 is the bare minimum, 7 is a good, but 10 is better.

One of my latest loads has just broken into 1/4 MOA teritory at 100. This same load is giving me 1.1 MOA at 600.

  • ive been looking into a 700 but they make so many calibers which is the best for long range action like 300 plus?

  • @dills2403

depends what your using it for. The 308 is a pretty good all around cartridge. You can use it hunting, for target shooting, tactical/ precision rifle use etc. Depending on ammo a decent rifle / shooter can hold MOA out to 1000 meters.
