colosseum 2 just leave you in total "awe"!!! the albums they produced have got to be the cream of jazz rock!!!! long may the legend of colosseum 2 live! R.I.P gary moore.
Brings back memories of my grammar school days listening to them on the radio in concert and being stunned by Gary Moore. I dont think he ever equalled the work on these albums !! Brilliant stuff and so inventive.
damn damn good!...Gary must have been reveling in his time, so many influences around him, he soaked them up and spatt them out with exuberance and skill that many will dream about, god i will miss this great guitarist!
I allways was a big fan of Colosseum I and had the chance to see one of best concerts I ever heard back in 1971. But I did'nt know of Colosseum II at those days, and wouldn't have had no idea of a guitarrist named Gary Moore. This video here shows once more how a fine and furious player Gary was, and what different styles he could play.
i will never forget the night i was sat in my bedroom (alone as a young teen I might add) listening to John Peel and he played this. My memory is crap but I remember it well, one of those things embossed on a mind. I thought simply wow, and who the hell is that guitar player cos I love him already never mind the rest of them. Obviously Gary is foremost in my mind now but what innovation and only Gary could have pulled it off with his all round abilitiy and style.
Along with Lizzy, this is my favorite Moore period. Doing what he does best. Flashy, overplaying, but not with the clinical feel of a lot of players at that time. IMO Moore was not a real 'blues' player. He overplayed, too much volume, not subtle.
One of the most ignored artist in contemporary terms - never too old too R&R but much far too young to die - and yes he will be missed - but did he get the recognition, attention and respect that he should have during his lifetime - probably only from other musicians / guitar players and a very small group of listerners / consumers.
the thesis "life is NOT fair" is reflected in the fact that dozens / hundreds of crap artists hit the charts while some diamonds stay hidden in the mud :( R.I.P.
Iv'e got the album. Some very nice moments on it and excellent playing by all concerned. For me they were better in the ensemble sections - the solos didn't quite come off for some reason. As I remember, they arrived at just the wrong time for this kind of music [76/77; the dreaded punk thing had them in its sights.....
I didn't see zombie's original post - were you guys referring to DiMeola? I love Colosseum, believe me, and half this quartet being gone does not make for a happy day. That said, Moore had acknowledged on a radio interview (KOME's Stonetrek - Bay Area, CA - if memory serves) in the C-Ii days that this track had "Race With the Devil on Spanish Highway" as a major influence, and it is pretty obvious.. Don't mean this is not a killer track on it's own!
these played Erics in Liverpool in 1977 the same night Thin Lizzy played at the Empire - some more knowledgable at the time attended both and caught the two bands jamming at Erics - sadly I was ignorant of it all AT THE TIME !!!
I was blown away when I first heard this piece in 1978. It's the best piece they ever did - Incredible. Deep and very fast moving. They fit more into the this track than most fit onto a whole album! Changes throughout. If this had been released in another era (i.e. not punk) it would have blown everything else way! Incredible.
it's okay, but the original colosseum is sooooo much better. colosseum with farlow, clempson, hiseman, hackstell-smith, hiseman, clarke and greenslade is the best.
Great technique aside, I always loved Gary Moore for his soulfulness, you can really see that he puts his heart into every note. I still have the original 3 vinyl LPs from this group and as soon as they were available I got them on CD and they are still on my mp3 player... Two other great bands of the same era I'd recommend, if you're not familiar with them already, are Camel from England and Focus from Holland.
apart from the bit about mp3, which I don't have,I could have written all this myself.
Great to see Gary as a youngster playing with this band after listening to them for the last15 years on vinyl and disc. Obviously this musical genre was not lining Garys pocket enough.
All music is self indulgent - the trick is to induldge in something that the audience enjoys aswell as the musicians - and I enjoyed this - I think I might get a bit bored after 2 hours of it but I have the attention span of a newt.
Excellent. Reminds me of Mahavishnu Orchestra & Chick Corea´s Return to forever. Gary is a very talented fusion guitarist. Terrific chops for those days.
Was this video from Rock Goes To College by BBC? I would love to get a DVD of this concert. Great playing by all band members, saw them live at Canterbury Univ in 70's when gary had just left Skid Row, he played alone on stage for 15 minutes everything from Bach to Blues and back again thro a worn out (wrecked) Marshall 50, and no effects. Amazing stuff Thanks for the posting.
i saw this band way way back in the 70's at a place called ivanhoes in Huddersfiled (uk) and went back stage, I comented on garys batterd looking les paul and almost fell through the floor when he just picked it up and handed it to me, then told me who gave it to him!
Some parts of this remind me of Journey's "Kohoutek." some parts remind me of Mahavishnu's "Birds of Fire." Finally, some parts are Casino era DiMeola-like. Very ripping piece with interesting progressions.
Has anyone got a video of CII performing War Dance? (in my opinion the best track they did together)GM carried on with the Jazz Rock stuff on Back on the Streets with only Simon Phillips replacing Hiseman on the drums. I believe there was a fall out between Hiseman & Moore on musical direction that caused CII to split. Hiseman can be heard on most of his missus stuff - Barbara Thompson.
I loved Colosseum from the start but never heard this great track. Gary's from my home town and I never realised that he could play acoustic like Al Di Meola. He is so versatile and should play more jazz rock. Thanks for posting this
I dunno, watching the Great Hiseman play the drums here looks like hes babysitting some spaccy, egotistical pretty stupid looking short arsed kids or something.
Awesome tune. If you like this then i think you will like the songs 'Alien Chase on Arabian Desert' (from the album Splendido Hotel) and 'Egyptian Danza' (from the album Casino). Both by Al Di Meola. Hope you enjoy...
This is the period where Gary developed his alternate picking style to keep up with Don Airey. This was when he was at his best. I have all 3 albus. Shame they didn't make more. Just look at his fluency at age of 23!!! how many guitarists could match his technique, sound and fluency those days?
