Unfortuntely Phelp's viewpoints have a solid basis in scripture. The Old Testament is as much a part of the bible as the New Testament. So the good teachings of Jesus are offset by the horrible teachings of the Old Testament.

Much of the hatred that Phelps spews is supported by the Old and New Testament, but not necessarily by Jesus.

Well, that's astute! It can be hard, sometimes, to combine Jesus' teachings, with that which came before and after; but it's part of the 'deal'. ;)

Scripture can be easily misused/abused, if one knows how to do it. :(

I think that's the most dangerous thing about christianity. The fact that so many different view, good or bad, can have a basis in scripture. A person can believe they are doing the lord's work whether they are giving money to a poor man or stoning a gay man to death.
