I have played all three AvantGrands and I think they are fantastic. I ended up buying the N1 a week ago for space and noise (neighbors) reasons, and I have no regrets. It's a fantastic instrument. The action along on the AvantGrands is almost worth the price. I didn't see a big advantage at all in the N2 over the N1 (speakers and TRS in the N2 weren't worth $3000 more). The AvantGrands are wonderful instruments!
@behemoth666123 I would be careful with the idea of playing at night in rented apartments. The key impact sound does transmit through the wood frame floor in my townhouse, to the extent that I cannot play when my son in the room below is sleeping. The 'silence' of headphones is an illusion to the player. I have not looked into damper devices - but if anyone is thinking of bringing the instrument into an apartment, investigate a way to dampen the sound.
@ArminRennich you got a point, but it's up to the apartment. I used to live in one with thin walls... you could hear people talk the next room; it was horrible. And for the last few years I live in a apartment (Art Nouveau-style house) with solid brick-walls. I can literally play music at a rather loud volume at night without disturbing others.
@casioPX500L I paid $12,500.00 in September 2010 for a new one. But you need to find a shop where there is no corporate 'screw the customer as much as possible so we can pay your commission and still become filthy rich' policy.
@ArminRennich well I have seen that Yamaha recomend price around $ 8700 for avantgrand N1. I think next step down in price is Kawai CA-93 is the best value for money or kawai ca-63.
How often you happen to play at 3 in the morning? :) Besides, I've got CVP-407 which is (I suppose) not even close to N-3 when it comes to sound / touch, etc. But when I put my headphones on it looses soooo much of the sound quality, so what's the point. The same will surely happen with N-3. I do not question that N-3 is a great instrument and if one can only afford - why not?But if I wanted something so close to the classical instrument I would really buy the classical one ;)
@mariobros1972 Space, I can't fit my seven foot grand in my New York Apartment, yet I get the sound quality from the avant grand. Also I work until 2-3 at night every night. PLaying the piano when I get home relaxes me.
Exactly! They went to far with this all think. Why making a digital piano to look / bahave / play exactly like analogue one? For the price of new Avant Grand N-3 one can easily buy a used grand piano i quite a good condition. Besides - it is too much filled with technology. Like nowadays car - they have lots of things onboard. And alll these things are mostly breaking down making the whole car useless...
This is the best DP ever created and it costs 20k, but PC-VST libraries are still better. Why? Why can't Yamaha (Roland, Kawai) record decent samples?
I have a Bohemia Grand piano that is 3 meters long, bought it for 76000 Euros, but if there would be this Yamaha, I would buy this one instead. I LOVE IT. Played it for a few hours, and I was amazed by it!!!
An acoustic piano requires not only tuning, but eventually reconditioning - especially after heavy use. A complete reconditioning costs around $11 or 12K.
Most Steinways are NOT reconditioned by their owners, who don't budget for it.
@dumnuts1 : Funny how all the negative comments seem to come mostly from you in the videos on Youtube. There seems to be a lot of satisfied customers out there. It must burn your ass to know that.
@dumnuts1 A toy? c'mon think before you talk. This is an amazing instrument, it sounds much better than mediocre real pianos. I agree that the actual masterpieces sound much better but calling this a toy is extremely exaggerated.
No piano stays pristine forever. An acoustic piano must be re-regulated (hammers replaced, springs, action replaced - action evened out. A major reconditioning of a Steinway can cost the price of an Avant Grand - yes $13-14K.
Im also thinking of buying but i'm wondering how long will it last if used at least 4 hours a day of practice? If it's only a decade then it's better to buy a real Steineay grand which you can hand down to your children or grandchildren or sell at a high price. That's the problem with digital instruments. Their life span is short and the value depreciates fast.
The thing is, remember how much money you're pooling into tune ups for your grands. Also, digital piano's maintenance is relatively cheap compared to your grands. Digital pianos are very versatile and software are continuously being developed, so there is a lot of potential for any digital piano.
And from personal experience, the Avant has better sound than many grands out there. So your pick.

Somebody tell this guy that it's a TOY.
If you can play as well as he can, you are not going to choose a TOY piano.
It's like a race car driver choosing a Camry.
