You should begin with a baby parrot that you handfeed.
In my country the biggest danger is the human predator. My birds learnt to ignore the kestrels after a few chases. Subscribe freeflight list of Yahoo and ask for advice.
i've been wanting to try this for a while, but do you think hawks, falcons and other birds of prey represent a danger? i'm sure they do to smaller parrots, like conures, but do they for a parrot of larger size?
Yes you can. But they are so tiny that you easily loose them from sight. Small birds are safer in flocks. Subscribe freeflight list of Yahoo and ask for information.
Sorry I don't believe in letting your parrots fly free outside. My fist bird a sun conure, was getting to get his wings cut that day. He was on my son's shoulder and a girl he didnt like came in. He chased her down the hall and she slammed the door on his head. I screamed all night long holding him dead. Now it's the safe side or no side. Hope you never have to experience it
I'm very sorry for the terrible accident that happened to your bird. Don't clip your next bird. Birds are born to fly. Learn about recall training, positive reinforcement training methods, freeflight list in Yahoo, and do not clip your birds.
WOW. I myself have a Nanday, a GreenCheek and a Hahn's. I am also currently fostering two Patagonians. I have an open floor plan home so my flighted birds can fly about if they desire. I also have three dogs and two cats, but they do not threaten the birds (the cats are completely intimidated by the loud squawks and big beaks I guess). They are all adults so I would not attempt to do what you do, but you have inspired me to buy even more floor stands for more places in the house they can land.
He belongs to my flock (my family, my other birds, my dog).He has no intention to leave his flock. My dog can run and cross the street but in many years he never did that. The same with my parrot, in 3 years free flying he never flew away. But this is not for every parrot/owner. It needs recall training and beginning with a very young bird. Free flying is dangerous and needs consistent training and environment desensitization.
I've got Patagonian conure, you can see him in my video (parrot and horse) and CAG but I don't yet free fly him. I red about FF festival in France, I'm sure it's going to be great! I do hope there will be some DVD about it for FF fans. BTW I'm from Slovenia.
I would never let a bird go free especially predators out their to eat it for lunch.

Yes, but what are your chances of finding a fully flighted bird if they have made up their mind to fly away?

i adore your parrot! Where can i get information how to train them?

Give them an opportunity to leave? Even if you live in NY where the winters get too cold for most parrots to survive? Or to get torn apart by dogs?

He flies at leat 3 times a week. He doesn't want to leave.

What would you do if she didn't come back?

Baby is a male. He free flies for almost 3 years. If he does not come back I would go to look for him. I hope it will never happen.

No doubt, birds must have the opportunity to fly. I will try to do better videos of Baby's flights.
