Maybe if they spent less time mud slinging and more time cooperating with their Japanese branch, maybe they'd still be around. Silly, Sega. Talking shit didn't do you very good, did it?
I HATE THIS COMMERCIAL!GAME BOY ROCKS!GAME GEAR LASTS 6 HOURS COMPARED TO GAME BOY WHICH HAD WAAAYYYYYYYY MORE TIME TO PLAY AND WAYYYYYYYYY BETTER GAMES!
Yes, the Game Gear was more impressive with its full colored screen yet the GameBoy had a more vast library of video games to choose from, better gameplay and batteries that could last for several days: that's what killed the Game Gear.
@DonkeykongSw2 When I was a kid, during the 1990s, I never could figure out what that was saying because they only had that on the screen for a split second.
Yeah yeah SEGA, guess what? Games weren't as good! I will hand it to you though, game gear was the 2nd best handheld ever. Only problem was it's size could have used a slight "slight" downgrade
I miss Sega of America. Back in the day Sega of Japan and Sega of America were basically two seperate companies with the same parent company name. SOA did everything they could to cater to the american game market, that's why the Genesis got all the best developer support from american game studios and the SNES was left out to dry. The SNES only overtook the Genesis in sales at the very end of it's life cycle when sega had moved on the the 32x, Sega CD and Saturn. SEGA!
I definitely agree about the battery life...TERRIBLE!! I had both, but I LOVED this commercial, LOL!!! The Game Boy sound effects still make me laugh myself sick!! LMAO!!!!
Atari and Sega just competed with the Game Boy all because the Game Boy had no color. Too bad the Game Gear didn't have any good games, while the Game Boy had always been a blast!
@funnyscorpian I'll admit that I don't have that much Game Gear games, but I never enjoyed playing any of them. The Game Boy had better titles like Tetris, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Land, Donkey Kong GB, Kirby's Dream Land, and some others, too. But I don't have a problem with your opinion on which handheld is better.
About the video description: never really thought of that. But then again, I was about 12 or 13 at the time, had a Game Boy, and I was like "eh, whatever."
@obdcla77 You were a pretty dramatic kid, huh? I imagine you set your Super Nintendo on fire before you brought the Playstation.
obdcla77's Mom: Is that smoke? Is our son burning something!?
obdcla77's Dad: Ah don't worry, he's probably just going to buy some new vidyagame. Anyway, I have great news dear, I've decided we're going to buy a new car!
Yes, Majesco re-released the Game Gear around 2000/2001 as part of a budget gaming line if I recall correctly...
But there were no new games developed. Only re-issues of older titles as far as I know. If there were any Game Gear games published after 1997, they were very few in number and likely in smaller markets.
The Gameboy Color came out 1 year after Sega stopped support of Game Gear. I don't believe the Game Gear ever really threatened the Gameboy's market share in any significant way.
I already knew that. It's the same thing with the Genesis and SNES. The Genesis came out first and initially sold better but then the SNES came out with a much better library of games and (in my opinion) overall better system quality and ended beating out the Genesis 2 to 1.
As for my name I can say the same about you can't I? it's always better (in my opinion) to come up with an original youtube name with no numbers and no real fame behind it so you know it's your thing. I like my name & yours
In a commercial it said you'd have to have an iq of 10 to perfer gameboy over gamegear. What? As I recall, it would be smarter to buy a system thats cheaper and has longer lasting batteries!
Is Sega the only company to start and add campaign insulting another company? That's pretty cheap in my opinion and probably embarrassing considering the Game Boy beat the Game Gear and the Lynx.
Sega fought tooth and nail to break Nintendo's iron grip on the videogame market. And to an extent, they prevailed, providing a valid alternative for many developers and creating an era of competition that made both Sega and Nintendo constantly strive to outdo each other, resulting in some of the most timeless games ever made.
We can look back now and criticize, but hindsight is 20/20. What Sega did wasn't always pretty but it did work, at least at first.
I understand that when it comes to the Genesis vs. SNES argument but in the handheld battleground it was truly a one sided fight. If their is any field that Nintendo has truly proven itself to be unbeatable in and hold %90 of the market dominance then it is the handheld market.
DS = longer battery life, durable design, bigger game library, from Nintendo, backward compatibility, cheaper price, weaker graphics, not comparable to console games, how could you not think this is like Game Boy.
PSP - more expensive, from another competitor, shorter battery life, still struggling to sell games, give Nintendo more run for their money, could be comparable to console games, better graphics. In Japan this portable is doing strong but not around the world.

When you say PSP is like the Game Boy, you really meant PSP is weaker than the DS and by saying this you had prove yourself wrong.
gameboy won the war because it had better battery life and just as good of games even though the graphics weren't as good. but both were great systems, especially if you didn't mind plugging the gamegear into an ac adaptor.
I remember my mom bought us two game gears. One for me & one for my brother. I had games like Sonic & Garfield. I think the problem with Game Gear was that the system eats the battery fast. Plus you need six batteries. Also, i didn't like the way the light works since it's too bright.Still it's the first handheld system i've seen that featured colors.

To be honest both of the systems suck compared to today's consoles. But if i had to pick between these two i'd go with the Game Gear because of...... BEAUTIFUL COLOUR!!!!!
Yeah to today's console's that would be like puting Atari up against PS3.. But i did have both handhelds and really the only thing Game Gear had over Gameboy was the color but gameplay was not all that ... and thats just my opinion..
Yeah sega kept coming out with systems ahead of their time and them costing more money to make. Genesis had amazing marketing. But the Dreamcast got absolutely non. The guy who was head the Sega America ran it to the ground, they were just about to be the first to support broadband gaming too. Plus they pissed off walmart and the already had a bad rep of abandoning systems *cough* cd, 32x saturn cough* So basically they screwed themselves over.
True. True. But the problems with the dreamcast was that it had poor marketing, lack of third party support. Had the Dreamcast been marketed in the RIGHT way, we would have seen a lot more sales by people who were rather lax about thier games, the elderly or those just starting out, for example.
It proved something though. That Sega SUCK at marketing consoles, and that you didnt need a superpower monolith like the PS2 at the time to be well loved and cherised.
It's said that this thing *ate* batteries because the backlight was a huge 900V neon tube. I know someone who managed to replace that with white LEDs and get *much* more battery life out of it.
I have been a huge sega fan. I had the master system, game gear, genesis, and CD. I loved all of the arcade ports they had like double dragon,Golden AXE and shinobi. They had some good rpgs too. I had a nes and S.nes. The my first game system was a Nes, but it broke after 3 days so i returned it. I got a sega master system instead for 200$ i think.
Nintendo often thought it would be too pricey to have colour screens when they did the GameBoy (the technology just wasent just there yet), which explained why the is a large price difference between the GameBoy and GameGear.
The GBC won primarily because there were no competition. And probably it's backwards compatablity with it's GB games.
lol they tryed the shit out of the original GB...i owned both :D
I loved the GG more cuz of the colors and power rangers games i still got them on emultor damn those games used to kick ass...as for anything else on the GG thats good i duno sonic? and pretty much most of the games i played sucked(i hvnt played alot of them)...
I think in like 30min my bat was gone later on i buaght this huge recharge bat then it lasted like 3 1/2 - 5hrs :)
Actually they can't because Nintendo and Sega had a massive argument about copyright or something and then Sega was banned from making consoles since Nintendo "won" but they can still make games!
They propably lost much when nintendo was selling GB because it was affordable...then someone bought sega..Today sega's remains take a little profit out of tittles passed on other consoles such as sonic...that's all i know
Thats BS though. Sega choose not to go back into the console market simply because they lost too much money watching the Saturn, Sega CD and 32x burn, and then only to be smitted when the DC missed the ring. They were nearing bankrupcy when they let loose the DC, it was a now or never situation. Now, because of that, they dont produce consoles anymore.
They didnt get banned from making consoles - they just dont want to. They lost wayyy too much money after the collapse of the Genesis add-ons and then watching the death of the Saturn burn... Sega tried one more time to get it right - it would have worked had they not bailed so early.
If after the DreamCast they produced another console today, they would probably going into bankrupcy, Sega at the moment is hanging onto thier company by the thread and simply dont have enough money.
The colors Green, Yellow, and Orange all look alike to dogs; but look different from Red and different from the various Blues and Purples. Dogs are very good at telling different shades of VIB apart. Finally, Blue-Green looks White to dogs.
That commercial wouldn't fly anymore. From an article at puplife(dot)com:
...dogs do see color, but in a more limited range than that seen by normal humans, who see the rainbow of colors described by "VIBGYOR": Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red... Instead, dogs see "VIBYYYR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, and Red).
Game Gear was good for the time, the color graphics were good, the games are okay, the control layout is smooth but most of the games are just ports of SMS and Genesis titles. Perhaps the only game worth playing for me on the Game Gear is Shining Force II: Sword of Hajya. That game was epic. Besides that Game Boy is still my favorite portable since it had all my favorite games on it.
yea gay pen to a touchscreen ds is way better than psp with god of war, street fighter alpha 3, guilty gear, twisted metal, and all the other cool games for psp. u suck douche go play ur cooking mama fag
FOR YOUR INFO DS IS WAY BETTER THAN PSP AND I EVEN HEAR NINTENDO FANS SAYING GAMEBOY COLOR IS EVEN BETTER THAN PSP.
ds HAS GAMES LIKE MORTAL KOMBAT SUPER MARIO MARIO KART CALL OF DUTY GRAND THEFT AUTO(COMING SOON) BLEACH AND MANY MORE GAMES. WOW LIKE PSP IS MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH RIGHT PSP DOESNT STAND A CHANCE AGAINST DS .PLUES THERE IS GOING TO BE A NEW DS NAME DSI WITH MP3 AND CAMERA IN IT . DID PSP HAVE A FREAKING CAMERA?NO SO PSP IS BETTER THAN DS AL THE WAY DOUCHE BAD....
hahahahaha gbc better than psp what a joke. gbc was lame only freakin games it had were mario, zelda, and pokomon. that thing sucked ass. and i luv how u write in caps ur such a big strong man arent u? yea ds is way better than psp w/e u say. ill be playing resistance retribution while u take pics of nude men with ur dsi lol
Man I owned both a Game Boy and a Game Gear back in the day, I loved my Game Gear because it was backlighted and had color, I loved my Gameboy because of Mario and Zelda.
However I can honestly say they both sucked because the Game Gear would eat through my batteries like a fat man and donuts, while my Gameboy I couldn't see in the dark.
Don't get me wrong I still love and own my Gameboy and Game Gear, but this is a reason why I stayed away from portable gaming til GBA SP came around.
At 0:24 you can see the Tom & Jerry game. That game was fucking impossible to beat. I still can't get through the damn first level. After that you can see the Ren & Stimpy game, which was awesome.
Man, this ad is really insulting... did they really think people would say 'hmm, actually they're right, I have a Game Boy, therefore I must have the IQ of a dog, better get a Game Gear instead!'.
I had a Game Gear myself, although I think in hindsight the Game Boy was almost certainly the better console, because without colour to fall back on it had to make games that were all about the fun of playing them.
Y'know, you look at all the games we have today with CRAZY graphics on our Wiis, PS3s, Xbox 360's, whatever...but I think, even though we've advanced so far in how we look at games, we lost something of ourselves when we left those classics behind us. Sonic, Super Mario Bros, man...THOSE were the days.
The fuck. Nintendo still makes Mario, all they ever do is remake Mario into everything.. As well as remake Zelda over and over. It really does get old...
Maybe if they spent less time mud slinging and more time cooperating with their Japanese branch, maybe they'd still be around. Silly, Sega. Talking shit didn't do you very good, did it?

I have been a huge sega fan. I had the master system, game gear, genesis, and CD. I loved all of the arcade ports they had like double dragon,Golden AXE and shinobi. They had some good rpgs too. I had a nes and S.nes. The my first game system was a Nes, but it broke after 3 days so i returned it. I got a sega master system instead for 200$ i think.

how come nintendo would not come up with color until much later?
megaman616 2 years ago 2
Nintendo often thought it would be too pricey to have colour screens when they did the GameBoy (the technology just wasent just there yet), which explained why the is a large price difference between the GameBoy and GameGear.
The GBC won primarily because there were no competition. And probably it's backwards compatablity with it's GB games.
RollinRolex 2 years ago 2
lol they tryed the shit out of the original GB...i owned both :D
I loved the GG more cuz of the colors and power rangers games i still got them on emultor damn those games used to kick ass...as for anything else on the GG thats good i duno sonic? and pretty much most of the games i played sucked(i hvnt played alot of them)...

sega is awesome, they should go back to making consoles
AdamJaffer 2 years ago 4
Actually they can't because Nintendo and Sega had a massive argument about copyright or something and then Sega was banned from making consoles since Nintendo "won" but they can still make games!
PivotKiller66 2 years ago
you sure man ? I'm almost guaranteed that its impossible for a company to have the ability to produce consoles banned
AdamJaffer 2 years ago
Well i'm not too sure but there is a reason you don't see anymore Sega consoles around anymore
PivotKiller66 2 years ago
They propably lost much when nintendo was selling GB because it was affordable...then someone bought sega..Today sega's remains take a little profit out of tittles passed on other consoles such as sonic...that's all i know
innervision17 2 years ago
Thats BS though. Sega choose not to go back into the console market simply because they lost too much money watching the Saturn, Sega CD and 32x burn, and then only to be smitted when the DC missed the ring. They were nearing bankrupcy when they let loose the DC, it was a now or never situation. Now, because of that, they dont produce consoles anymore.
RollinRolex 2 years ago
Good point but i made that comment AGES ago
PivotKiller66 2 years ago
Haha, funny how AGES is actually SEGA reversed.

UDIGGBLEU 2 years ago

And yes, I know I'm nitpicking. :P :)
CanItAlready 2 years ago
That commercial wouldn't fly anymore. From an article at puplife(dot)com:
...dogs do see color, but in a more limited range than that seen by normal humans, who see the rainbow of colors described by "VIBGYOR": Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red... Instead, dogs see "VIBYYYR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, and Red).
CanItAlready 2 years ago
Tetris on Game Boy probably sold more copies then all of the Game Gear games they show in this commercial COMBINED.

Uh... Sorry to nitpick, but the PSP DID have a camera. DS (I have one as well) only fairs better because it has touch screen. And its cheaper.

Man, this ad is really insulting... did they really think people would say 'hmm, actually they're right, I have a Game Boy, therefore I must have the IQ of a dog, better get a Game Gear instead!'.
I had a Game Gear myself, although I think in hindsight the Game Boy was almost certainly the better console, because without colour to fall back on it had to make games that were all about the fun of playing them.
aliquidcow 3 years ago
the game gear still had great games. the only problem was its size and battery life.
