  • How long did it take for you to get the tranny apart? I just swapped mine.

  • @fockyoumang 10 hours to take out the tranny from the car because this is the first time doing it on a 02 civic. Tearing the tranny apart takes less time.

  • how much would total cost be if i took it to a mechanic? the noise goes away when i hit the clutch but comes back when i release and speed.

  • @kpbrian79 It varies. One shop might charge $400 while another might charge $800. The cheapest quote I got was from a tranny shop for $350 to replace just the ISB.

When you engage the clutch the bearing is spinning so you'll hear the noise of the input shaft bearing. While you disengage the clutch by pressing down on your foot, the input shaft bearing is not moving and you'll not hear it. In my opinion it's best to replace the $35 bearing then wait & have to replace tranny later.

  • Hello there! Quick question, I have the same car and my car sounds just like the bad ISB you showed when I start it up but as soon as I press the clutch in, it stops. Car purrs like a kitten then. Do you suspect I have a bad ISB? The car also seems to rattle when taking off but if I turn, then take off, no rattle until I straighten out. Any help would be great!

  • @zx10rpower

I think your ISB is bad and needs to be replaced. While you have the tranny out you might want to check the throw out bearing as well. The only way to know for sure is to drop the tranny but I am pretty sure it's your ISB. Best of luck to you.

  • @vfr661 Just wanted to thank you for a great video. the comparison b/w the two ISB was extremely helpful. I replaced my ISB and clutch while I was at it and now my car is good again. Now I need to grease my shifter pivot ball =>(

  • Very helpful. Thank you!

  • Great vid man, very helpful to use as a comparison. Were you required to use a bearing puller to remove the old bearing?

  • @5FlyHigh05 I bought the bearing puller from Harbor Freight but it didn't fit so I end up taping the metal cage of the bearing with a screw driver and hammer. The bearing came out easily with this method. The hard part is putting the new bearing onto the shaft. The trick to install the new bearing is freeze it for about 30 minutes in the freezer before you tap it back on the shaft.

  • @vfr661 Great, thanks for the tip!

  • very helpful video. is it necessary to change a bad ISB when there is a lot of noise? or can you run fine without it? My silverado has been making noise for over a year. thinking about replacing it...thanks

  • @dpinedoblog I recommend replacement of the ISB as soon as possible to avoid more costly and major tranny repair. I'd rather pay $35 to replace the bearing than spend hundreds to replace/rebuild the whole tranny. The longer you wait the more likely the repair will cost you more.
