as they said, without powerfull czechoslovakian industry, the germans were not able to attack france, poland, russia... chamberlain didnt realize it, in order to keep peace he ended up with with much stronger germany to fight with and lost an allie who desperately needed help and was ready to fight.... actually not him, but churchill, who wasnt scared, but the opportunity was already gone
Why could they not tow artillery and bomb the shit out of Stalingrad? Taking it by hand sounds abit crazy, I think it would be better if they just bombed the shit out of it. From what I seen the nazi airforce wasnt that big and didnt seem to utilize bombers like the allies did
There is such obsession with the tanks, ignoring that Artillery and infantry opened the holes, and the air force destroyed tanks at a distance. That is why the inferior German Tanks won the day, and then penetrated.
@TheDevilsBusiness The sight of panzers oftengave nightmares to our 1939-1945 ancestors, those "inferior" tanks were the BEST, well, until 1944, when Soviet Russia designed a better one, one shell put on a SHrman tank would destroy it completely, 3 Bazooka hits won't even destroy it. so, study tanks, and, Nazi's had the most experienced troops, and where more prepared for war
@cssnubito Actually, more like 1939-1942. Mark3 and Mark 4 couldn't even make an impression on T-34's.It took leveling the 88 anti aircraft guns, and really really crappy command and control on the Soviet side, to get rid of the T-34. Wasn't until the Tiger's that they were bested, but by then the Soviets had better toys.
In the West, you are right, which is why Eisenhower hit them at their weak point - fuel and transpiration. And the Typhoons rockets that blasted them apart. Study yourself.
Yes, it was true- it was the "massing" that was key to german sucess in WWII, which is why they lost- after 1943, germany began to run low on resources and could no longer utilize artillery in mass.
What Rolf Penselin (Panzer commander) said about orders... they were given orders to attack but the commanders in the field could decide when and were!! Great way of doing things, no wonder they achieved so much. I only wish so many people in so many industries today would think like that! 0_o
I have to hand it to the germans for making the best with what they had. Any country of Germany's size against two superpowers at the time and a bunch of other countries wouldn't have lasted 2 months.
Quantity IS a quality. German superiority in almost every weapons system, plus their highly disciplined and well trained professional army made it easy for them to believe their own propaganda. NEVER underestimate your opponent! Looking back at it with 60+ years to read and discuss WW2 makes you wonder why the Germans truly believed they could rule the world when you could see on paper the manufacturing ability and the natural resources of the allied forces. Millions died by German folly...
if they had used there tanks just like the germans and helped poland as they promesed it would only be a small war fought in germany and poland. and then hope the sovjets dont invade europe
@Moordendvermaak The problem would have been to bring the tanks into Poland fast enough. Britains would have had the choice to bring them in over the Beltic Sea, the French after a 3000 mile thrust through the Siegfriedline... with an army solely dedicated to trench fighting.
no stalingrad but full offensive of kaukasus for oil..
and a base for further offensive in either persia for oil, or iraq for oil
the second is farfetched.. but seen as the middle east is imperative to the survival of the british empire it would be like swatting 2 flies in one move.
ofc your right in the fact that they did underestimate the russians.
that's their plan, with the Japanese coming from the East through India. They could have started the offensive earlier or postponed it to the next year
dickmjavil hitler hoped the japanese attacked russia from the east but the damm japs attacked america. And mussolini had to attack greece so hitler needed to help him because italins cant win a war. and thye started too late
@lifes40123 nein..das ist nicht correct, NAZI germany was the most powerful country on the planet, the only reason why russia won was becau of the winter, before the winter russia was defeated. thats why they stopped attacking and retreated, and only began attacking like sisys when the german tanks were freezing and troops were dying in the snow out of extreme cold. while the soviets came with skis and thick snow jackets etc, aso russias death toll was more then germanys, we killed more, we WON.
your wrong even if the nazi germans did conquer stalingrad they still have to face millions of russians they lost because they were outnumbered by millions of russians
@NuclearSalvation The record for a Kraut machine gun nest is 3000 soldiers killed in a one day fight. Off course, that was on D-Day, so it were Yanks, not Russkies.
The problem were, that main german oil sources were in Romania and Baku, which didnt matter before Operation Barbarossa, as Stalin kept the gasoline running before the attack, and then lost the grip on the pipelines during the attack.
@BusterXXXL I think you ought to check your facts there Buster... Total casualties on D-Day were 10 000 with 2 500 killed. Thats amongst all units and on all the separate beaches including airborne divisions, so I doubt that very much. The Russians were victorious for the same reasons the Western Allies were victorious. They had access to more supplies and men. Simple.
@NuclearSalvation OK, checked my facts, and i really botched the numbers. It were only 1500-2000 casualties by Widerstandsnest 62's machine gunner Heinrich Severloh, so maybe 300 to 500 actually killed.
Still, my point is, that MG34 and/or MG42 werent prone to jams if handled properly,.
@ssmusic214 The only nonsense is to blame me, to have stated the opposite. Germans didnt need any troops in Baku to service their campaigns in Poland, Scandinavia, France or around the mediterranean, since Stalin sent Hitler all the fuel he wanted to appease him. They still had the Baku fields as a strategic source in their logistical planning, even for the expected later Russian campaign. Without Baku they just had enough reserves for a short war, but when Case Blue failt, they were f**ked.
@BusterXXXL I understood, you were referring to situation at D-day. But even before that the only 10" pipeline from Baku Azerbaidjan was to Batumi Georgia. And Stalin's transportation system was so obsolete and inefficient, that there was no way to deliver enough oil to have serious impact on giant German war machine. Stalin did supply oil to Mussolini during his Abyssinian War. But it was minuscule amount compared to Hitlers war needs.
@RAINBOWHORSES yep and they gave one man a rifle and the next bullets when one fell the other picked up his gun. they charged and were shot if they retreated and the Germans shot them when they charged. it was called not a step back this wasn't used until Stalingrad. the Russians said they were buying time with blood
Awesome series kingtiger88. The two doctrines of Kampfgruppe and Blitzkrieg could very well have won the war for Germany. Fortunatly for the world, Hitler living in a fantasy world of his own making, bit off far more that he could chew. But I believe his fortunes may have been different, even as late as summer 43 if he had let his best generals implement their ideas. His moronic no retreat policy did as much as any other element in that war to bring Germany to it's knee's. A pathetic waste.
as they said, without powerfull czechoslovakian industry, the germans were not able to attack france, poland, russia... chamberlain didnt realize it, in order to keep peace he ended up with with much stronger germany to fight with and lost an allie who desperately needed help and was ready to fight.... actually not him, but churchill, who wasnt scared, but the opportunity was already gone

they tended to jam suddenly when fired on by US .50 caliber machine guns which had much longer range and heavier rounds for better penetration.

Actually, US losses for all of Omaha was about 2,000....German oil sources were significantly augmented by Fischer Tropf conversion of coal to oil.
