Thank you!! Worked just fine! I;m using Ubunto 11.10 and I just opened a new terminal and typed exactly what you did (ls to find user name) and then passwd "my user name" then hit enter. It asked what I wanted my new password to be and then it made me retype it. Then it WORKED!! Thank you, Thank you! Maybe this comment will be of use to someone else...
On some videos here on Youtube someone says to hold the ESC-key,but correct and most common is to hold SHIFT-key---> 0:48 I hope helped,greetz from Macedonia! Ubuntu rocks!

This is only working if you have not set a root password,
if you have a clean installation there is no root password set.
