What a simply phenomenal record. Pan's People are dancing to Van McCoy's 'The Hustle' here, they are certainly easy on the eye but the true star of this show is the General. What a voice.
Great funk track. I remember hearing this on the radio when I was a kid and my sis had the 45 of this song too. Also, the women in this video were quite hot.....
@highkarate. "White people were funkier back i the day"(?) Most routinely by imitating blacks in the U.S., as Mick Jagger and the Beatles liberally attested. And too, as this was England, they could afford to be "funky" by fiat!!! I mean "Immienent Domain"!!!
I was having this conversation with a pal of mine. He said that it was strange that lot's of white people like a variety of black music, yet few (if any) black people liked white music. I said that the reason was that no matter how good the music produced by white artists was (as previously mentioned, The Beatles, Rolling Stones etc) it is still a copy or has its roots in black music. Why would a black person be interested in music that is just a copy of something they created?
@tonypmcfc. Yes, surhr yer right!!! Though, as I've have said FOR DECADES, that I was a "Beatlemanaic" since I was FIvE YEARS OLD!!! The way to resolve this, my friend, is to understand cultural blending. Yes, because of the Puritanical, and therefore acetic nature of of American Protestanism from its earliest days on these shores OUR HUNDREND YEARS AGO, aehestic culture was frowned upon, which led to the Salem Witchhunts!!! Later, in the second half of the seventeenth century, (cont'd)
(Cont'd)...by the seventeenth century, cultural imports and trends from Europe, especially the influence of Bach, Mozart, Deitrich Buxtahude, and Vivaldi, matched with the guilt from the close of the previous era, informed the gereations of our Founding Father (which included Phylis Wheatly, and Astronomer Ben Bannecker,) that there is no freedom of mind without MUSIC!!! First there was the "classical era", which ended with Verdi and Antionin Dvorak. at the same time A.A. had a rich (Cont'd).
Crickey! That's a bit too much for me to take in mate. All I do know is there can be no doubt that rock n' roll has its roots from R&B, which originated from Africa and was brought to America by the slaves. When The Beatles first landed in the US they were asked "What's the first thing you are going to do?" "We're going to see Muddy Waters" Lennon replied. Where's that ? asked the interviewer" White Americans up until that point had little interest in music that was on their own doorstep.
@tonypmcfc. "Crikckey"??? The first time I heard that saying was in a Vin Diesel movie "Pitch Black". Though you should know I'm a shameless"Eastenders" fan, and THEY don't use that term! I guess it's germain only to Australia!
I wanted to follow-up on the comments, but I just didn't have the time. Mybe later.
It's certainly a very English expression and it used to be used a lot once but I think it is one of those words that is dying out. Just shows, I'm getting old.
@tonypmcfc Well, seeming as black music has been influenced by European hymns and classical music, particularly Chopin (listen to Scott Joplin) Bach and the impressionists, why shouldn't everyone just relax.Besides,Beatles melodies are usually more akin to the folk and classical tradition.
Funny, but I am referring more to the fact that the MEDIA was not such a monstrosity back then. People, Black or White had more freedom back then. It is not a black vs white thing really. Both cultures are influenced greatly now by our modern media.
All the good energy and panache of the 60's, the Beat and Bop energy propelled by the fearlessness of a 'can do' culture, was blown away by the winds of consumerism.

I found the love You threw away Now you realize You made a mistake But now she's mine And we're doing fine You can't steal her love No use in trying Your eyes may shine Your teeth may grit But none of this love Are you gonna get [CHORUS] Finder's keepers, losers weepers I found the love you lost And I'm gonna keep her Finder's keepers, losers weepers I found the love you lost And I'm gonna keep her This love of mine is super fine Lord knows I'm glad I made her mine
You treat her bad You know you made her sad Now you realize The good thing you had But it's too late Don't even try Never gonna give her up And I ain't lying [Repeat CHORUS] Your eyes may shine Your teeth may grit But none of this love Are you gonna get [Repeat CHORUS]
Interesting you say that - her name's Ruth and she was to eventually become Flick Colby's no.2 - and helped choreograph and train PP's successors Legs and Co.
I used to DJ myself in the 70's. I was offered the job as DJ at Pontins holiday camp in Southport and was looking forward to starting. The guy that hired me gave me a piece of advice. He said, be careful with some of the girls as they may look 6, many times they aren't. Sadly, I had to turn it down and went abroad for six months instead.
This was my mothers song..All she needed was black label and this song!!!!!I was 8 this song was on a blue record. I remember back then..I never dranked and still dont..lol.
Brilliant! Back in the 70's it was still possible to see big acts at small venues. Here in Manchester we had place that is now a B&Q warehouse called The Village, which was a disco five nights a week, but for two nights it doubled as a venue. Paul McCartney, Slade and I think David Bowie all played there at some point.

@viceroy30 I'm sure you're right. Over the past forty years I have heard many songs re issued, strangely no one has doe a remix or re make of this. I would have thought that it was ripe for someone. Hmm, I may just contact Simon Fowl and suggest that I do a re make
It's hard to believe that ths great track only charted the top fifty in the Uk at number 21 for one week only....in July 73....as a sixteen year old it, got me straight on the dance floor. Class number.
I know what you mean. I keep trying to explain to my kids that back then a record could sell 20000 copies and only reach number 30 in the charts. Today 20000 sales or downloads can get you to number one for up to six weeks.
I remember buying this song on a 45-RPM back in 1973. I love the early "High-NRG" electronic sound, along with the standard rhythm section and that "Fred Wesley-like" trombone. This came out just one year after Billy Preston's "Outta Space" and just one year before the Commodores' "Machine Gun." Three recordings that ventured into putting a "wah-wah" pedal to the electronic keyboards. Also, General Norman Johnson was a pretty good vocalist, too.
I haven't had any formal medical training, glenn 1340, but I would say that it was perfectly normal. I remember watching Pans People dancing to some track on TotP and all the girls were wearing a different coloured teddy type negligee. I didn't slep for a week and when I did sleep, I use to wake up covered in sweat.
Great track and Pans people were all schoolboys fantasy back then.A friend of mine in the RN was related to Babs(his aunty i think) the blond one and can remember getting in to Tiffinays nightclub in Bristol to see them around 1975 -good times.
Outstanding !!! Fantastic funk groove & those wonderful Pans People girls, the only thing wrong with this period in time is that it went by too swiftly !!!
Thank you for that, 'tonypmcfc'. What also made me think of this was an episode of-would you believe-of " The Andy Griffith Show" (A TV series I detested as a child for the obvious reasons of the then turbulent times, despite the affability of Griffith, Knoxx, Neigbors, etc.,). The one where a group of 60s-inspired Beatles hipster school-kids try to show a disdainful elderly town council that the former's "modern" group were not much different than the latter's 20s-era's "flapper" culture.
Pardon folks, but I find it funny that the dancers originally performed their steps-allegedly-to the late Van McCoy's "The Hustle" yet they are executing dance moves from before WWII.
I said something similar to my teenage son who was facinated by those Muller yoghurt adverts that featured recent dance hits but with a very old video clip of 1920's or 30's dancers. He couldn't believe how in sinc the the music and dancing was when they were sepearated by some sixty years in time. I explained that choreography really asn't changed that much, but each generation likes to think that they invented everything.
Virtually, Pan's PPls were nuns:That was part of their appeal. Now understand I first discovered these beauties seven months ago while scanning for "The Chairman" 's vids. And once again I declare I'm a shameless fan of the young Ruth's image.
Pussycat Dolls and Lady GaGA(She should team-up with Marilyn Manson to promote why we should have selective genetic breeding,)are simply there for profit-nothing more. Also the pop music industry is so bankrupt and immoral this is what substitutes talent.
I mean, like, weren't the Beatles in their early or mid-20s when they hit it big in '62? Even back then they were considerd mature adults, which is why the "oldsters" objected to their 'beatnik' act of being "irresponsible" and "immature", and....Oh crap!!! I can't take this! I'm staring again at young RUTH PEARSON prancing on the dance floor. I'm outta here, for now!!!
Yeah, you're right about the Beatles. IWhen I think back, even the Bay City Rollers, who appealed to tiny boppers of twelve years of age were in their mid twenties. Today, acts likeThe Pussycat Dolls prance around on stage and are sexually explicit to the point they make Pans People look like nuns. Yet they expect us to be takern seriously as musicians. Glad you are enjoying the video.
Yeah, well they also sound like Sam and Dave. And What's this about "boy bands". Most of these guys including "The Isley Brothers" "The Chairmen.", and "Sam and Dave" were already in their mid-to-late-20's by the time of the early 70s! Except maybe for the "The Chairmen", most of the Soul\R&B\Rock groups were famous from the late 50s on. Ask the surviving members of the beatles and the Rolling Stones as they covered these rock pioneers. The only "young'uns" were the J-5 and the "Five Stair-steps!
I know, that was why I put the term "Boy Band" in inverted comas. The term is being used these days to legitimise crappy bands of four or five spotty youths who can't sing. I even heard The Beatles described as the "biggest boy band of all time" I must be getting old (er)
No disrespect to many of the black "boy bands" of the '70's, but you could easily mistake one for the other, but that's because they were all as good as each other.
@tonypmcfc A lot of artists back then did the biggest hits on their albums in two parts. l and ll...let me tell you, those damn songs could go on for up to twenty-five minutes. But we loved them just the same.
Gaaad! See what you made me do MsedgarKelly? After commenting on Ruth, I couldn't help but go to the video again. And perhaps again. I do so hate obsessive impulses, but it's soooo good in this case!
If so, please enlighten me. I'm not above admitting I could be wrong. The evidence presented was so compelling, and as we know, there are many fascinating connections in showbiz that are-even now with the internet-not known to the public-yet!
Until now, no one has come up with a rebuttal. If the Pearsons and Quigleys on either side of The Pond, are related, please reveal. But please, try not to cover up what may be true. I am in full sympathy with ppl in showbiz rights and need for privacy.
I remember this so well. The best part of top of the pops used to be watching Pans People at the end of the show and trying to emulate them whilst dancing around in front of the TV. Excellent
Hello, there. It's been a while but you gotta hear this. I appears that Ruth Pearson of "Pan's People" actually is related to American actress Jane Alexander. A query to a Buzz bloger started an enthused discussion of this topic. What I failed to notice (that one blogger picked up on,) was that Ms. Alexander's mother Ruth Elizabeth Quigley's maiden name was PEARSON!The resemblance,as noted is undenieable. So, it turns out that both these fine women are cousins, or maybe even half-sisters.
Twas in the 1970's they were on tour --they were appearing at the Talk of The South in Southend on Sea--I was the drummer in the resident band. Their drummer went down with illness and I was asked to step in at the last moment !! Luckily I knew most of their set and really enjoyed appearing with them that week......
When I was a kid growing up here in the UK, we had radio one on the radio and Top of the Pops on TV playing and showing non stop pop music of the day. However, on the radio they would still make a point of playing "oldies" so that new listeners could hear somthing of what went before. In my opinion, radio and TV does not cater enough for the older musician allowing the next generation the chance to see what went on before.
Well said, even though you probably wouldn't like my taste in modern music indie/electro dance i don't think there is any choice for older musicians. However it gets on my nerves very much because there is no choice what so ever for people like me.
Hey there: In time code 00:40-50 is it my imagination or is one of those sultry Pan People sirens a dead-ringer for actress JANE ALEXANDER, who was young enough then(and with those gaming gams)? I understand that even after the Great White Hope and the New Centurions was still a struggling actress.
The video is an original ofPans People dancing to a completely different song. I simply added the music to Chairman of the Board. I played it my daughter and didn't tell her what I had done and she thought that they were dancing to that song. I have seen the same video with them dancing to another track, so someone else had the same idea as me.
I agree with the above. The other day I saw the Pussycat Dolls video for DEont cha. It had mnore sexual connatations in it than some sex film I saw in the seventies.
I agree with gossipgirfan94. Earlier today I was talking with someone about what was meant by "the end of the innocence". I have to say that the PC brigade are responsible for the end of a lot of people's innocence. So what if the whole thing was designed so that men could garp at the girl dancers? Everyone enjoyed themselves and no-one was damaged.
For Gods sake there is no need to be so PC, it's just a bit of nostalgic fun. Pans People and later Leggs and Co were doing nothing different to the Pussycat Dolls, Girl Aloud or any other "Girl Band" the only difference was that they didn't pretend to be musicians whilst girating around.
@gossipgirfan94 Man that must've been fun to be around in those times... Great music, women that girated around knowing that's all they could do. Damn, I was born in the wrong generation.
man you know that's eddie hazel, and bernie worrell on this track and possibly billy bass and tiki fulwood from funkadelic doing the album it's proven that funkadelic played on the skin I'm in album.
Just goes to show what a mans world it was in the 70's, who chose their costumes? I seem to remember watching them dance to some track with each of them wearing a different coloured basque and stockings!! - disgusting

Great track and Pans people were all schoolboys fantasy back then.A friend of mine in the RN was related to Babs(his aunty i think) the blond one and can remember getting in to Tiffinays nightclub in Bristol to see them around 1975 -good times.

Atomank68 2 years ago
Pardon folks, but I find it funny that the dancers originally performed their steps-allegedly-to the late Van McCoy's "The Hustle" yet they are executing dance moves from before WWII.
Atomank68 2 years ago
I said something similar to my teenage son who was facinated by those Muller yoghurt adverts that featured recent dance hits but with a very old video clip of 1920's or 30's dancers. He couldn't believe how in sinc the the music and dancing was when they were sepearated by some sixty years in time. I explained that choreography really asn't changed that much, but each generation likes to think that they invented everything.
tonypmcfc 2 years ago 2
Virtually, Pan's PPls were nuns:That was part of their appeal. Now understand I first discovered these beauties seven months ago while scanning for "The Chairman" 's vids. And once again I declare I'm a shameless fan of the young Ruth's image.
Pussycat Dolls and Lady GaGA(She should team-up with Marilyn Manson to promote why we should have selective genetic breeding,)are simply there for profit-nothing more. Also the pop music industry is so bankrupt and immoral this is what substitutes talent.
Atomank68 2 years ago
I mean, like, weren't the Beatles in their early or mid-20s when they hit it big in '62? Even back then they were considerd mature adults, which is why the "oldsters" objected to their 'beatnik' act of being "irresponsible" and "immature", and....Oh crap!!! I can't take this! I'm staring again at young RUTH PEARSON prancing on the dance floor. I'm outta here, for now!!!
Atomank68 2 years ago
Yeah, you're right about the Beatles. IWhen I think back, even the Bay City Rollers, who appealed to tiny boppers of twelve years of age were in their mid twenties. Today, acts likeThe Pussycat Dolls prance around on stage and are sexually explicit to the point they make Pans People look like nuns. Yet they expect us to be takern seriously as musicians. Glad you are enjoying the video.
tonypmcfc 2 years ago
Yeah, well they also sound like Sam and Dave. And What's this about "boy bands". Most of these guys including "The Isley Brothers" "The Chairmen.", and "Sam and Dave" were already in their mid-to-late-20's by the time of the early 70s! Except maybe for the "The Chairmen", most of the Soul\R&B\Rock groups were famous from the late 50s on. Ask the surviving members of the beatles and the Rolling Stones as they covered these rock pioneers. The only "young'uns" were the J-5 and the "Five Stair-steps!
Atomank68 2 years ago
I know, that was why I put the term "Boy Band" in inverted comas. The term is being used these days to legitimise crappy bands of four or five spotty youths who can't sing. I even heard The Beatles described as the "biggest boy band of all time" I must be getting old (er)

No disrespect to many of the black "boy bands" of the '70's, but you could easily mistake one for the other, but that's because they were all as good as each other.
tonypmcfc 2 years ago
Pans People were very tasty peaches.
ColumRogers 2 years ago
The B side of this was instrumental. Wish someone would post that. BTW it does sound a little like the Isleys on some parts.
dtwgirl 2 years ago
I think you're right, wasn't it an instrumental version of Finders Keepers? I used to use the track to close a session when I used to DJ
tonypmcfc 2 years ago
@tonypmcfc A lot of artists back then did the biggest hits on their albums in two parts. l and ll...let me tell you, those damn songs could go on for up to twenty-five minutes. But we loved them just the same.
ekocentric 1 year ago
@dtwgirl The Chairmen of the Board had a trombone player who was a monster player. They called him Super bone.

tha's supposed to be "the hustle" isn't it?

I think it was the Hustle in the original video. I added the Finders Keepers track and it just goes that most dance routines can suit many songs

In my opinion, radio and TV does not cater enough for the older musician allowing the next generation the chance to see what went on before.
tonypmcfc 2 years ago
Well said, even though you probably wouldn't like my taste in modern music indie/electro dance i don't think there is any choice for older musicians. However it gets on my nerves very much because there is no choice what so ever for people like me.
ColumRogers 2 years ago
Hey there: In time code 00:40-50 is it my imagination or is one of those sultry Pan People sirens a dead-ringer for actress JANE ALEXANDER, who was young enough then(and with those gaming gams)? I understand that even after the Great White Hope and the New Centurions was still a struggling actress.
Would be interesting if she's in this vid.

The video is an original ofPans People dancing to a completely different song. I simply added the music to Chairman of the Board. I played it my daughter and didn't tell her what I had done and she thought that they were dancing to that song. I have seen the same video with them dancing to another track, so someone else had the same idea as me.

This sort of schtick dates back to lines of tap dancers at theatres. Truly awful. It really just boils down to watching girls for cheap thrills.
TinyFlix 3 years ago
For Gods sake there is no need to be so PC, it's just a bit of nostalgic fun. Pans People and later Leggs and Co were doing nothing different to the Pussycat Dolls, Girl Aloud or any other "Girl Band" the only difference was that they didn't pretend to be musicians whilst girating around.
gossipgirfan94 3 years ago 8
@gossipgirfan94 Man that must've been fun to be around in those times... Great music, women that girated around knowing that's all they could do. Damn, I was born in the wrong generation.
