I used to be part of a Stage Band and of a Combo in High School... We used to play Feel So Good, Children of Sanchez and Land of Make Believe .... So love Chuck Mangione stuff :)
such an amazing gifted musician, add Estherfield and u have perfection. Some others like Sau Gan, The Bollero, Jonathon livingston Seagull-by Richard Harris, Maybe some JC superstar.- Used to live next to the Eastman house in Rochester 1975-76
This song is amazing - had forgotten about it. The only version I can find on CD is a LIVE one. Thanks for posting - I need to listen to this often!! Met Chuck when he appeared at Jazz Alley in Seattle several years ago. He was so nice to greet fans and pose for pictures.
Wow! My band instructor John Buckley arranged this song for the Marching Chiefs to play at the Prism concert at Ruby Diamond Auditorium. It sounded amazing but no where near as wonderful as The Chuck Mangione band
I used to have this album and I am looking for it on CD where Chuck is sitting in the folding chair with the white background. Is it out of production? I think this was an early 70s release. Any points in the right direction would be appreciated.
1972 - You are out of luck album is out of print, you can find the LP for sale at Amazon and eBay. Someone had pm here at the 'Tube and asked me to sign a petition requesting release of Mr. Mangione disography a year ago. Here's the site - mangionemajic (dot) com. Peace. :)
@markalpa Yes. That is Gerry on sax. One of the most melodic players, and under rated players, too, as far as I'm concerned. He was also a very nice man.
@aammirr Yes Mr. Davis did play on this album, flute, tenor saxophone, congas, bongos, timbales, percussion, but it was Steve Gadd who played the drums on, "Land of Make Believe".
My high school jazz band is playing this at a jazz festival in NIC(north idaho college). idk if it is a ranking festival but either way we have been doin pretty well so far.
Saw him in concert in the late 80's. I marched in drum and bugle corps which used Chucks music quite a bit...particularly the Blue Devils did a flawless rendition of Legend of a One Eyed Sailor and Bellavia...
This is great but I the version done with Vocalist Esther Satterfield and the Hamilton Philharmonic is the best. They Lyrics take you along for the ride to the Land of Make Believe. Some guy named Mr CapoCom posted it on youtube and you can check it out as a complete version. Awesome!
One of the greatest compositions ever! I can hear a millions times and still enjoy listening. That's a definition of a great composition because it never gets old. Love it today the way I loved it the first time I heard back in the 70's.
Incredible drummer, I cant even find any writing or biographies on him, apparently his name is Ron Davis but thats all I know, his work in this piece is unbelievable
Thanks for posting. Great song and album. Nothing negative meant here, but this came out in his less commercial days ('72). Damn shame it's still not out on CD.
@betonnie Gerry Niewood? You mean somebody pre-dated Chris Vadala???
You're off by a year, but you're a lot closer than I was. The album of the same name is from '73. I thought it was fairly new in spring of '77 when our hs band played it. Here's a tip of the hat to Alison B, our soloist nonpareil at ECHS.
@pexter1969 He has a website in his own name. You can guess what it is, just add the usual stuff to his name, alloneword. He's in Poland this weekend, 3 stops in 4 days. Judging by the slim 2010 tour schedule, Chuck must be very big in Poland and Korea. I think I read there that Korea accepted Give it All You Got (the 1980 Winter Olympics theme) or one of his similar songs as a national sports theme and he has been revered ever since.
@Junior1luv I was told Mangione was given ONE of his horns by Dizzy. He has many,(that much I'm sure of) but the flugel wasn't from Diz, it was a trumpet Diz gave him, with the trademark upward pointing bell. Least ways, that's the story I heard from somebody that should know, somebody that used to play some gigs with him. Course, he could be full of it, one never really knows.
Burt Bacharach & Hal David wrote a song with the same title back in November 1963 which Dionne Warwick recorded.
I was interested cuz I'm a Steely Dan fan & in the book 'Reelin' In The Years', Donald Fagen's quoted saying one of his favorite tunes he'd like to perform was the B & D version of this song.
Tho, I checked on Peter Allen and did not much care for his music. He doesn't hold a candle to the songwriting skills of Bacharach and David.
I was born in 1954, a musician and had never heard of Peter Allen. He seems quite the energetic entertainer, with quite the following...but he's not my cup of tea.
our marching band is doing like 4 songs of him, their echano, el gato triste land of make beleive, and a mangione opener and im on the drumline and the music is from the dci group so were going to have a real tough time with this shit
The " Live at the Hollywood Bowl" version -w/ a large ensemble- is even better (in my opinion, although his solo here is totally awesome, pure melodic Bebop)....Do you have it?If you do , please post it, but thanks for this one anyway.
The drumming is so complimentary to the song. It could have so easily over powered the performances of Chuck and Gerry just because of the type of rythm it is.
I used to be part of a Stage Band and of a Combo in High School... We used to play Feel So Good, Children of Sanchez and Land of Make Believe .... So love Chuck Mangione stuff :)

I was so lucky to enjoy his music live in Amsterdamin 1980:):):)
With his quartet and his father selling gadges at the entrance of the former church where they performed.
Almost familiy like.
And yes, the drummer was incredible. But they alle were. The pure joy of making music
