  • Why did the south shore upgrade to ctc? As a resault the road repeater is sure quiietter then it used to be

  • Call it what you may, it's my favorite line whatever name used, "The South Shore Line" You are correct as they do not appear to be interurban, still love'm just the same.

    Dan

  • With these new bi-level cars, I'm not even sure if I should call this line an "interurban" line anymore--the new passenger cars no longer remind me of the old interurban cars from 70-80 years ago.

  • The South Shore Operates Freights which are wider than the commuter cars. So As Not To Drag On The Platforms, There's A Parallel Goutlet Track. There's Also Tracks Like This At East Chicago & Gary.

    Dan

  • @css903 Thanks for explaining that. I noticed the inner and outer tracks at East Chicago station and didn't know why. I figured it was for non-stopping trains but didn't figure it was freight.

  • Somewhat interesting arrangement to switch to a "parallel" set of tracks to pull the trainset closer to the platform. I'll assume that through trains do not switch. Don't believe I've ever seen that before.

  • At bridges, the two extra tracks are in case of derailment. Glad you liked the video!

  • very nice..Im from the northeast..the balast track and stations on the this section u videoed look new..or is just a improvements, what are the 2 rails in the middle of the track for?

  • There are a couple that arelisted near the cab ride you commented on.

  • do you have a video of the exterior?

  • These Galleries got some giddeyup to em...

  • Hello Css..I live in South Bend away from the tracks now and don't get to see the new cars. Do they even come this far, or are they just used between Michigan City and Chicago? Next video you do, I would love to see the inside of both decks. I grew up riding the old Orange and Maroon trains.

  • I will make of point of it next time I am home which should be in July. I would guess they go to SB, but I have only ridden them to Hegewisch so far

  • @jjaagg5050 They won't be used to South Bend until the overhead catenary can be upgraded and replaced. They don't want to risk running the cars under the old catenary and get disabled in the middle of nowhere, and that won't be for at least another year or so.

  • @JLJ061, thanks for the reply. I had a feeling the new cars wouldn't come in to SB. I also wondered if they had done a clearance test even. The catenary is old and I hope they get it replaced soon. Thanks again!

  • @jjaagg5050 They are usually parked around Carroll Ave in Michigan City

  • Cool, I grew up on the Southside in the South Chicago Neighborhood. Never rode this train but recognized alot of the scenes. Great Video. Makes me Home Sick.

  • The Red over flashing green stands for "Diverging clear, approach diverging" Basically, you're going to switch tracks twice.

  • Thank you

    Dan

  • That's weird... everywhere else I've known to be called "Limited Clear."

I don't know if I'll ever get used to the SouthShore using CTC, all my life I've known it to use nothing but ABS and train orders!

  • I believe it's proceed, but with caution?

  • maybe, I've never seen that before, I've seen flashing yellow and flashing red, but never flashing green, also, love how the South Shore Cars have the same door closing announcement as Metra now

  • The CSS&SB tracks carry both passenger and freight trains. To ensure that a freight train can travel thru the station with plenty of clearance the CSS&SB set up a gauntlet track system. Freight stays on the "main" while passnger trains divert on the tracks closest to the station so passengers can board or depart the train. The signal will give a solid green indication if the train is not diverting and flashing green if is.

  • what is up with that flashing green at hegeswich?
