He reminds me a bit of Ayrton Senna. Both were young, talented, and died too early through no fault of their own doing what they wanted to do. There was also a lot of tension and suspense surrounding the announcement of their death.
@erwinruys Too true. Senna was a cheat with no regard for human safety unless the crash didn't involve him. If it was at the other end of the field, he was always deeply affected - Martin Donnelly, Eric Comas, Roland Ratzenberger & Rubens Barichello @ Imola all deeply affected him to the point where he stopped his car straight away and went to help if he could.
@azapro911 You are exactly right people do say that. Motorsports is VERY real no matter how little coverage it gets, such as IndyCar. Dan Wheldon was an amazing driver and an upstanding gentleman. He will be missed very much no matter what series you follow.
@goattke In Britain, he got absolutely no respect because Indycar had become completely forgotten about since Whingel Mansell waddled off back to the golf course. Yesterday, on Sky Sports, they announced him merely as "British driver Dan Wheldon". Now, I know it was hardly the most important thing at the time, but they could have once - just ONCE - acknowledged his championships and accolades. Well, I DO appreciate my countryman, and it's nice to see that many other Indy followers do. :-)
@azapro911 I wouldn't necessarily say I follow IndyCar, I'm your stereotypical American and follow mostly NASCAR, but I know a quality driver when I see one and Dan was one of the best. It's a real shame when his own country doesn't even really acknowledge his accomplishments. There have been many fine men and women come out of your country, and Mr. Wheldon was one of the best.
@goattke Trust me dude, if he'd been a cricketer, footballer (soccer), rugby player, Formula One driver or any other headline British sport, he'd have been given tributes and mournimng comparable to Ayrton Senna or your fabulous NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. Dan's crash has been given plenty, but not the life that led up to it. Basically, when the day comes for Michael Jordan to pass on (in old age), it'd be like Chicago Bulls fans saying "Oh well, fuck it, he's not playing anymore". Sad, huh?
Rip Dan and thank you

@legr8est1234 Only thing Wheldon was a gent, Senna a man who was capable of everything to win (even at risk of his own life).

People say that Indycar isn't a "real" series anymore. Well, Dan Wheldon's death feels "real" enough to me. :-(
