I have heard & read where Dominicans & Puertoricans are now wanting to be called caribeano instead of Latino/Latina due to the fact they feel they have more indo blood then Spanish or African blood. In fact that is what most black color people are called in the Dominican Republic is Indio. Many are tired of trying to justify that they are Hispanic/Latino so they rather avoid the label since they are not consider to be. Others want Afro Descendientes because they feel its more accurate label.
This is an excellent summary of the Miami Herald article. I remember my ex boyfriend (and still one of my best male guy friend) is Dominican. His mother is a darker skinned Dominican (morena) and his father is blanco. Thanks for creating this video and I will be sharing this on my Facebook page, which focuses primarily on Afro Latinos. Very ironic this piece was done by the Miami Herald, one of the most racist cities on the planet, dominated by Cubans, Jews and Wasps all of whom practice overt, covert racism in economics, education, housing etc. Someone should do a piece on Miami (and Florida in general) and how it treats Africans from America, Haiti and other countries. I lived in Santo Domingo, DR for 2 years. 80% are dark skinned Black (Moreno), and 20% are Reddish Brown (Indio). Very few are White (Blanco). But they are all ONE amongst each other.
But there is a line that divides their Island, and the Dominicans on the other side speak French and Kreole.
80% are also Dark Skinned (Negro). Their Redbones are called Mullatos. They call themselves Haitians- even though they're from the EXACT same tribes as Dominicans

@teacherofculture Remember the moors were kicked out of Spain during the Reconquista. They either got killed or fled because their was no mercy for them after hundreds of years of occupation. In fact the Spanish went as far as Morocco to ensure they were gone.

I think the so called 11% Black demographic only includes those of Haitian descent, and OMITS the native Hispanic Afro Dominicano population! SMFH!
