you sing great Lew!! i sung this in 4th grade on day and i loved it and now i cant get it out of my head we also danced to it but, it didnt go so well, the whole class was cracking up the whole time but still you sung it awsomely!!
Now that's a blast from the past! I was introduced to this song as a kid by the Alan Lomax recording...used to find it a bit misogynist (that version ended with "ugly little girl, when I've got a pretty wife at home")...but now, in the greater wisdom of advanced age, I realize it's a lesson about trying too hard!
i sung this in 3rd,4th and 5th grade ! me and my class loved this song!

Great version, and I imagine pretty close to the original renditions heard in America in the 17th century. Amazing :-)

I thought it was about a soldier away from home (at war) having an affair only to abandon her when the war was over.
Not about trying too hard but about being taken advantage of.

Same interpretation, different point of view!

Hello
Lew...
Many thanks for introducing me to a new back porch song that I can easily and readily accompany you on with my trusty, dusty old mountain dulcimer.
Peace,
Stewball...(who is always in search of hidden gems such as the one you have presented here).
