@acenace24 I heard it took them 30 minutes to get him out. I think they already knew he wasn't going to make it. The head injury was to severe. The rumor was his skull was pushed back like 3 inches. No way to survive. I believe they kept him alive long enough for his family to say goodbye. If you look closely at him in the stretcher he has an airbag attached and the medic behind him is squeezing it. To sad...

it matters not what he chose to do for a living. he loved the thrill of his career just as much, if not more than those who loved watching him. Motor sport has been made safer through the years as a result of accidents. we learn as we live. it is still however, a shock. the christians in the colosseums had very litle chioce - there is no comparison. a young man with a young family has died , tragically. it upsets people, as it has me and they/ we are entitled to say so!

@BestRandomShots The only place you will see blood is when he is on the stretcher heading to the helicopter, but you have to enlarge the picture. You can see blood on the towel under his chin and the woman walking behind him is holding a towel with blood droplets on it. I heard the blood was inside the helmet, and he had brain matter splayed across his face. The pole hit near his chin and the force pushed up through the top of his forehead. to sad, he will be missed.

@3bzee Dan's helmet remained on his head the whole time. I have seen a photo after the car came to rest and his body along with his helmet were completely intact inside the cockpit.........the shearing off of the roll bar assemble and engine box just behind the his head from the car body is what alerted me to the severity of the impact. Some reports I heard just after the crash said all drivers were alert but that is hard to imagine in Dan's case..........RIP great one.

As a Indy car race fan since the 50s when we'd lose two or three drivers a year to the much 'safer' racing today, it's still a terrible shock to lose someone like Dan Wheldon in such a viloent way. Yet in the spring when the call goes out for 'drivers to your cars' they will climb in again and we fans will ride with them as aways....
