  • I had the opposite problem. Made a mistake setting up LVM and accidentally included the only windows partition I had at home. Even though I immediately reversed my mistake still couldn't fix it. Tried testdisk to resurect the NTFS partition but no luck. Unfortunately, I knew reinstalling would blow away my linux system (and I was more familiar with lilo than grub) so I just let sleeping dogs lie... 'till I found your post. I had no idea it would be so easy to resurrect grub. Thanks again.

  • hey thanks... it helped!!! :)

  • very helpful vid, thanks

  • Dam you have a sexy voice

  • The real question is - is there a way to uninstall GRUB safely and easily without having to use a Windows Repair Disk/USB?

Like the very first time I attempted to dual-boot and decided that I didn't like doing that - I deleted the Ubuntu partition and when I rebooted, it gave me an error about no such partition existing and I had to use a few command lines in command prompt since things like Super GRUB wouldn't work.

Was a nightmare...I just stick to using virtual machines now. lol

  • @LordReserei01 I know you said without win install disk, but its really fast to do fixmbr from any win install disk, then you have default win loader, takes like 2 mins..

  • Yeah, I know. I did a video doing that method not too long ago. =)

  • That's what I meant in my comment by using a few command lines in command prompt.

  • Other alternatives: download supergrub from windows, and install it.

Or you can also boot the live cd and in the terminal do: chroot /dev/sda. If you installed windows or something else before linux, do a double check and see where your linux partition is located. Now do apt-get install grub. You should also run the update-grub command just to be sure it is recognizing all your operating systems.

  • "Windows however, does NOT play well with others" Cracked me up.....

  • i learned alot about linux from you beautiful thanks your incredible

  • I deleted a partition and not it takes me to brub restore> prompt. How do I restore this on GRUB2?

    thanks

  • I ♥ YOU!!

I wish i was your age and i was married to you!

    grub> quit

  • $ sudo grub

    grub> setup (hd1) setup (hd1) ...

    grub> quit

  • can you boot me? : ) ur so hot!

  • i prefer BURG to GRUB because it looks a hell of a lot better and i think most distros should use it other than having the ugly boot selector pop up whenever you decide to dualboot.... just my opinion

  • I love you!!!!!!!!! Very useful info!

  • Will you marry me? lol Good tutorial

  • does all your linux files and stuff stay or are they unrecoverable once you devide your hard drive and install windows?

  • hello hi you look very nice in this video,

  • i need help.

i have windows installed and i installed ubuntu 9.10 on the hard drive side by side.

    ubuntu killed my windows bootloader

    it looks like this

    /dev/sda1 1 281 10289601 83 Linux

    /dev/sda2 *2299 4865 20618240 7 HPFS/NTFS (windows 7)

Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.

    /dev/sda3 4866 19457 117210240 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)

now i can't boot windows 7 i tried grub but when i boot windows 7 i only see a blackscreen.

  • @099watcher Your partition seems to be corrupted. you should

    1) try ddrescue to rescue the windows data on a image, and then use that image to repair the corrupted one (check on google for ddrescue, you will need another hardrive, it's quite easy to use)

    2) if you still can access your windows data from linux just make a backup and reinstall windows

  • @assalane my computer is now running dual boot windows 7 and linux (ubuntu)

i just updated the grub and a little boot modification and everything is running smooth as butter thanks to ubuntu forums really helpful website.

    BTW thanks for reply.

  • @assalane Oh wow just a grub misconfiguration ? the partition error was kinda alarming, but glad you could sort it out

  • @cyberpunkarg

Y a vos qué te importa?

Por algo puse "jajaja": porque era un chiste. Más pajero serás vos, que te metés a insultar a gente que ni conocés

  • @cyberpunkarg You smell here

  • Hot chick explaining how to reinstall GRUB ... damn .. i'm dead and in geek heaven!

  • I get [error 15] from find /boot/grub/stage1.

  • I used to make a new little partition and install another ubuntu there to "restore" grub. Your explanation is clear and straightforward, thanks. I'm not sure what kind of hd that I have though, would there be something bad happened if I mistyped the hd part?

  • My solution is even more simple. I have installed an instance of Ubuntu on my 16GB USB stick and during installation of boot loader, it assumed all entries in boot loader from hard drive, so I could use them even if the boot loader on hard drive was damaged. After that, it's easy to restore grub, and optionally, reinstall grub-pc package.

  • Hi Linda: Is it possible to change the boot order,i.e. first windows then ubuntu?Thx.

  • @rugelindinda Grub has been going through some changes lately, so I can't be 100 per cent sure, but it's always been possible in the past, and it's always been pretty easy. Just edit (as root) the text file at /boot/grub/menu.lst. Just change the order of the items in the menu

  • @rugelindinda Sorry, it looks like my advice no longer applies.

  • @rugelindinda Okay, This should be more helpful. Check out Nixie's video "Probing your box, Grub2 and you" for information on how to edit your grub options, and make a backup. Listed here under "Video responses".

  • Não entendo muito o inglês, mas gostei da aula, e ate compreendi o procedimento...

    Thank you very.....

  • Não entendo muito o inglês, mas gostei da aula, e ate compreendi o procedimento...

    Thank you very.....

  • OMG! Just read on LinuxHaxor that you use Slickness-Black! We have so much in common xD Luv ya Nix! Was checking to see if this happened to talk about the million Ubuntu options I have in my GRUB now :p

  • lol hotness will never disguise the fact that LINUX USERS ARE MOSTLY MAC FANS THAT ARE JUST STRAIGHT UP TOO DAMN CHEAP! :D

  • @azure401 Fuckin A right! I'm running Slackware Current on a Dell Pentium 4 that I purchased from a police auction for 38 dollars plus shipping. It's running KDE 4.4 with more bells and whistles than a Coney Island Fun House.

Of course, lots of people install Linux onto their mac, and it runs just fine.

  • @omgitsmikegravel lol since when did people install a free os onto a macintosh computer they payed at least $1000 for? if these people want linux so bad go buy a pc and use wubi or install linux urself, cause buying an extremely expensive nice computer to install a freeware os like linux on it is just freakin retarded.

  • Comment removed

  • @azure401 Not really. I'm sure they can dual boot, and run either OS at will. There are all sorts of reasons why two OSs might be better than one. For example, Debian is available for mac, and that comes with enough software packages to fill five DVDs.

I'm sure people do it because they like the Mac Hardware, and the Linux software. To me, that makes perfect sense. But even I would not discard the mac OS.

  • @azure401 PS. If you want to look like you know anything about this, You should learn the difference between "freeware" and "free software".

  • @omgitsmikegravel *coughcough* freeware |ˈfrēˌwer|

    noun

software that is available free of charge." straight from a dictionary. look it up dip shit.

  • @azure401 Yes, that's what freeware is. This is what free software is:

“Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.”

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it means that the program's users have the four essential freedoms:

  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

  • @azure401 (cont)

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

From "The Definition of Free Software",. published by the Free Software Foundation.

  • I just updated to 10.04 and now my XP won't boot. it hangs on a blank screen after selecting it. What does this mean? I can mount the drive and all my stuff is still there just it won't boot :(

  • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Live CD must install grub (generic) 1st, which can be done from Synaptic Package Manager. Then you can edit the grub.

  • I love her!!!!!!!!

  • Hey NixiePixel, what do you think of GRUB 2 since they are adding alot of new features such as easier themes. So far it is pretty nice and fast. A little eaiser to tweak with. Got it setup on my netbook after thinking install incorrectly but just BIOs trying to boot the wrong partition. Hate it when simple mistakes like that cause errors.

  • Hello NP

Can you update reinstalling Grub for Ubuntu 10.04 please?

  • The funniest part after reading all these commments: "So thanks for checking me out ..."

  • Linux should make her it's Spokes person Linux will Rocket High Upwards !!!

  • very sexy spokesman or woman what ever you want to call it

  • -.-/.... you are SO cute...... voice sounds beautiful through this cam

  • Saludos desde Chile, Sud America

  • errr..lol?

  • I love your videos. You and Tim from OSGUI have made my transition a lot easier. Do you know how to clean up the grub menu? I would like it to only show Ubuntu, Win7 and repair options.

  • She has a really sexy voice!

And the video fixed my problem.

  • The chick is hot . and they say women can't compete with men ... this video was viewed 100K ... please give me a break ... we all here for the chick :)

  • One thing, i followed the example in the video to reinstall my Bootloader just now, you can also do this without the Live CD, just do everything Nix Says in a terminal in a fully installed version of ubuntu and.. Kachinga!

  • Girl and Linux .. ? Amazing, thought Linux is no t for the girls :) But she is too good in it ;)

  • Lol I had that problem. wow... so many check this out just for looks... sickos... anyway I could've used this so many months ago but it will help me so much if it happens again! i did a reinstall of win7 few months back and GRUB had a huge issue. Anyone like 10.04? I love it!

  • This don't work with me, But Thank you anyway.
