You guys are all nerds who are still virgins! (Yes,I too just clicked the video because of the girl in the thumbnail, I know nothing about computers.)
The real question is - is there a way to uninstall GRUB safely and easily without having to use a Windows Repair Disk/USB?
Like the very first time I attempted to dual-boot and decided that I didn't like doing that - I deleted the Ubuntu partition and when I rebooted, it gave me an error about no such partition existing and I had to use a few command lines in command prompt since things like Super GRUB wouldn't work.
Was a nightmare...I just stick to using virtual machines now. lol
@LordReserei01 I know you said without win install disk, but its really fast to do fixmbr from any win install disk, then you have default win loader, takes like 2 mins..
Other alternatives: download supergrub from windows, and install it.
Or you can also boot the live cd and in the terminal do: chroot /dev/sda. If you installed windows or something else before linux, do a double check and see where your linux partition is located. Now do apt-get install grub. You should also run the update-grub command just to be sure it is recognizing all your operating systems.
When using "fdisk -l" (Lowercase L) check that your linux is marked as bootable. If not marked as bootable: sudo fdisk /dev/sda (and use fdisk commands to flag that partition as boot).

@azure401 Fuckin A right! I'm running Slackware Current on a Dell Pentium 4 that I purchased from a police auction for 38 dollars plus shipping. It's running KDE 4.4 with more bells and whistles than a Coney Island Fun House.
Of course, lots of people install Linux onto their mac, and it runs just fine.
@omgitsmikegravel lol since when did people install a free os onto a macintosh computer they payed at least $1000 for? if these people want linux so bad go buy a pc and use wubi or install linux urself, cause buying an extremely expensive nice computer to install a freeware os like linux on it is just freakin retarded.
@azure401 Not really. I'm sure they can dual boot, and run either OS at will. There are all sorts of reasons why two OSs might be better than one. For example, Debian is available for mac, and that comes with enough software packages to fill five DVDs.
I'm sure people do it because they like the Mac Hardware, and the Linux software. To me, that makes perfect sense. But even I would not discard the mac OS.
@azure401 Yes, that's what freeware is. This is what free software is:
“Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.”
Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it means that the program's users have the four essential freedoms:
The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
From "The Definition of Free Software",. published by the Free Software Foundation.
that was an awesome tutorial 4 grub legacy...Although I am having problems with a windows 7 / ubuntu LL dual boot grub 2....windows is throwing a tatntrum and refusing to boot after I installed linux... :(
I just updated to 10.04 and now my XP won't boot. it hangs on a blank screen after selecting it. What does this mean? I can mount the drive and all my stuff is still there just it won't boot :(
Hey NixiePixel, what do you think of GRUB 2 since they are adding alot of new features such as easier themes. So far it is pretty nice and fast. A little eaiser to tweak with. Got it setup on my netbook after thinking install incorrectly but just BIOs trying to boot the wrong partition. Hate it when simple mistakes like that cause errors.
.... Yes, She's Hot, whatever, I'm a guy, and what she has to say far out weights how she looks, I too get stuck with the mentality that she's a chick ZOMGWTF, but the information she gives should decide if her video is good or not, imo anyway..
I love your videos. You and Tim from OSGUI have made my transition a lot easier. Do you know how to clean up the grub menu? I would like it to only show Ubuntu, Win7 and repair options.
The chick is hot . and they say women can't compete with men ... this video was viewed 100K ... please give me a break ... we all here for the chick :)
One thing, i followed the example in the video to reinstall my Bootloader just now, you can also do this without the Live CD, just do everything Nix Says in a terminal in a fully installed version of ubuntu and.. Kachinga!
Lol I had that problem. wow... so many check this out just for looks... sickos... anyway I could've used this so many months ago but it will help me so much if it happens again! i did a reinstall of win7 few months back and GRUB had a huge issue. Anyone like 10.04? I love it!
I had the opposite problem. Made a mistake setting up LVM and accidentally included the only windows partition I had at home. Even though I immediately reversed my mistake still couldn't fix it. Tried testdisk to resurect the NTFS partition but no luck. Unfortunately, I knew reinstalling would blow away my linux system (and I was more familiar with lilo than grub) so I just let sleeping dogs lie... 'till I found your post. For LIVE CD for Grub2 (Ubuntu/Mint 10,etc)...boot it. In Terminal:
1) sudo fdisk -l
Look to find where linux is (sda1,sda2,...)
2) sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
^make sure for sdaX it's the # figured out in step 1
3) sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

@azure401 PS. If you want to look like you know anything about this, You should learn the difference between "freeware" and "free software".
omgitsmikegravel 1 year ago
@omgitsmikegravel *coughcough* freeware |ˈfrēˌwer|
noun
software that is available free of charge." straight from a dictionary. look it up dip shit.
azure401 1 year ago
@azure401 Yes, that's what freeware is. This is what free software is:
“Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.”
Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it means that the program's users have the four essential freedoms:
omgitsmikegravel 1 year ago
The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
omgitsmikegravel 1 year ago
@azure401 (cont)
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
From "The Definition of Free Software",. published by the Free Software Foundation.

I just updated to 10.04 and now my XP won't boot. it hangs on a blank screen after selecting it. What does this mean? I can mount the drive and all my stuff is still there just it won't boot :(

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Live CD must install grub (generic) 1st, which can be done from Synaptic Package Manager. Then you can edit the grub.
