said something to my Social Studies teacher about Paul Revere being a singer too and he looked at me in awe. (im 13 soo yeaa not surprising he would look at me like that)
Nice intro with a little Nashville influence. Hey, it worked for a kid from NYC named Johnny Rivers -- didn't it? Some have viewed this band as bunch of costumed clowns. I always looked at these guys as serious musicians. I met Mark, Paul, and Phil a looooooong time ago in Cali. Great musicians and great guys all around!
And Americans! Great shtick, great songs, fun television show for awhile ("Where the Action is" wasn't it?). A little like the Monkeys, Beatles, everyone else.
The Nashville sound was evident in this one. Johnny Rivers went that route too. Great vocals too. Paul Revere and The Raiders were serious musicians -- not just gimmicky uniforms. Somehow, they need to regroup and take it on the road (just one more time).
saw these guys live, one of the best stage shows I've ever seen; high energy, to say the least. much better music in late sixties/early seventies, wonder what happened...
saw these guys live, one of the best stage shows I've ever seen; high energy, to say the least. much better music in late sixties/early seventies, wonder whathappened...
Jerry Cole is actually the guitarist who played on this recording...Cole, who passed a couple of years ago, played on about 150 Gold Records!... Mark Lindsay told me it was Jerry Cole, who did the recording... He was perhaps the most recorded session guitarist in L.A. for rock and other songs at the time...
Cole also played lead on Shindig, along with James Burton...I used to know him...
I just noticed something. There are 2 morons that don't like this video. Aside from Drake not playing, I don't really see anything to dislike about Paul Revere & The Raiders!
This is such a cool song by the Raiders!!! Too bad Drake had to watch from the wings while Freddy was playing guitar. Oh well, great video to watch anyway.
@LynnRoRo - thanks very very much for the tip. I love that other version with that audio. As I once remarked: "I defy anyone to show me a more inspired or dangerous performance." Now I can watch it every day too!
A couple of people have asked this question and no one answered. Does anyone know what happened to an earlier posting of this performance with the original audio track? It was NOT the recorded version here (clearly out of sync with the video). Was there some kind of copyright problem with that audio track? Strange, since the video is still here... Thanks to anyone who can answer!
Not just the Raiders. If you remember a lot of those great groups that appeared on Ed Sullivan had to comply with his wishes. Ed Sullivan could make or break your career. I remember going over to my rich uncles house and seeing Paul Revere and the Raiders in color, up to then I had only seen them in Black and White on the ABC show "Where The Action Is"
Another reason the Rock Hall of Fame is bogus. No PR &R. I remember driving in NJ at the jersey shore with this blasting from the 8 track in my Olds. Gas was 29 cents a gallon and a six pack of Bud $1.15
they were just as good as the biggest bands of the day.i think the silly image killed them.i like it but when your competing with the who,the stones, zep, beatles, hendrix etc...just my opinion.great vid.thanx
Freddy Weller is there, but I thought an entire new group of Raiders were brought in during early 1967 when the others started the group the Brotherhood.
It's a bummer that Paul Revere did not let Drake play in this show, instead Paul hired Freddy Weller to play while Drake watched in the wings. Still a real good song. Anybody know if the double neck guitar was actually Drake's? Pls let me know. :)
@ShockDoc Don't show your ignorance of the genre, Schmuck. Mick Jagger could hop around and bring the excitement of the beat to the audience. What's your problem. I was fortunate to see PR&R, Stone, Rascals,Hendrix & even the Beatles live. These guys could not be topped for Rock choreography, & getting the crowd involved
Hey Zep fans! Here's Freddy Weller playing Jimmy Page's guitar a full 5 years before JP did! LZ ripped off EVERYBODY. I'm sure there's a Monkees influence in there somewhere, too. LOL
Always loved this song. The guitar riffs when it goes quiet really got me. Great dance song too. Paul and Raiders did good for America, one of the few american bands that could match the drive of the British Invasion groups. Thanks for the posting.
What type of Palsy is it that he is suffering from? The convulsions seem to subside the longer the band played. Apparently...Therapeutic...Amazing!!!! Great Video and Song>
For jtomsic69 There is no R& R hall. That place is a mercchandise center on Lake Erie. The induction committee is bogus since it has no criteria. They have Stooges, Cure and Artist called Prince. No PR & R, Doobies,Little Feat, Los Lobos, Steve Miller, Deep Purple, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Alvin Lee. Actually it would be an insult to be inducted.
@stampedehero27 I guess I'm partial to the original members.....they always seemed to be having more fun.....while Freddy Weller may be a great guitar player, he just never seemed to get with the program, to me.
I don't think Paul handled the defection of Jim, Drake or Fang very well, at all.
@stampedehero27 You are right on with your comments! It's unfortunate that the Hall seems to be more politcal than anything. You make a good point about criteria for selection. I guess I'm too much of idealist to think that groups would actually be selected becuse of their talents. It is what it is!
Mark Lindsay is so hot. I think I'll be watching this a number of times.... It's probably his best tv appearance, at his peak. I still am POed at PR for being so mean and not only making Drake the wonder boy stand in the wings while some new guy syncs his licks on the biggest show on tv - but not allowing any face time to other Raider power player and total cutie Pie Fang. thanks for posting terukiteruki!

I'm old enough to know what it was like to just see something once and really burn it into our memories. I'm lucky enough to see it again, & amazed I remembered details so well! Clip cuts off before Mark Lindsay tilted his head forward and The Ponytail flipped forward and every female on planet swooned. That aside - I understand it's really the great Drake playing. PR was mad at him for defecting with Fang & Smitty and had newbie Freddie W play ESS, while Drake watched from the wings. RIP Drake
@Dawn1959 I don't care what anyone says!!! Drake should have been playing on the Ed Sullivan Show, NOT Freddie. You are so right! Drake and Fang with their dance moves were fun to watch :)
I got hooked on this band in 1965 when they appeared on the ABC afternoon show "Where the Action is" I was in the 5th grade at Charnock Road elementary and would meet at my cousins house around the block and all us kids and some grown ups would wait for them to sing their new songs. Just like Rick Nelson would do at the end of the "Ozzie and Harriet Show" The only other group we would give up our play time to would be the Beatles.
wow, what happened? There was a live version of Mark singing this tune and it was removed. Why? The funny thing is that the song did end with the live cord from the show. Now it's an album cut fade.
I remember this song very well I think I was about 11 and missed seeing them on Ed Sullivan. I did see them on a show called Hollywood Palace a couple years later they sang The Great Airplane Strike. I always thought Mark Lindsay was soooooo coool with his moves, good looks and ponytail. I agree with you all they have been very under rated. Their songs sound as fresh today as the day they were released 40 ago.
What happened to the earlier version of this video? Plus all the comments. This upload is poor quality and doesn't do justice to this outstanding group. When is the Rock Hall going to wake up and put these guys in! So many groups like these guys belong over some of the questionable ones already in! Madonna, the Stooges! what a joke!
You gotta be kidding me - Fang was the effin' BASS player, for Gods sake! he couldnt carry mark Lindsay's used jock strap. Fang was always trying to pick up the pussy Mark didnt have time for - get real.
