When i was watching lawrence of arabia i had a feeling that i was there with them not in front of my screen this is all Peter o'toole's great performance....
Sadly, O'Toole is only one in a long long list of legendary actors/directors who never got an oscar despite being innovative masters of their craft: Chaplin, Welles, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Frankenheimer, Costa-Gavras, to name a few. Some of them did receive an honorary trophy or an award for some technical stuff (like Kubrick, Welles or Chaplin) but never for best director or best actor. Shame.....
to me, i think that an honorary oscar is much more special than a regular one, it's a pity that Peter didn't get a regular one, but this honorary oscar is an achievement at another level. Hundreds of people got regular oscars, but only a few can be get one of these.
Of course he was overlooked! The acdemy awards have been a sham and will always be to who sells the most tickets! You get an award for your talents?.. lol give me a break....
DarkHorseDarrkHorse - agree with you 100%. Lawrence remains a high point in screen acting history and the performance opposite Hepburn in Lion in Winter when still in his 30s was equally astonishing. He's the greatest screen actor Britain ever produced and his performances dwarfed those that picked up the Oscars he should have won. Pity this video cut out the montage of screen highlights that prededed the acceptance speech, it was a great showcase for his power and charisma.
@jamietotz I disagree. He did deserve the oscar for Lawrence of Arabia and Lion in winter. To kill a mockinbird is not such a great movie, and Gregory Peck was a good actor, but he could not match O´Toole. To kill a mockinbird was super hyped for its anti racist message.
"as I totter into Antiquity movie magic enraptures me still." who else but Peter O'Toole could come up with a sentence like that and make it sound so eloquent.
I'm glad Peter accepted this chunk of metal, but I'm also glad that he turned down the knighthood ... " a paltry honour", as Keith Richards recently observed!
It seems ridiculous at first sight that Peter didn't take best actor for "Lawrence", but you can't begrudge Gregory Peck, can you?
This award is usually given to unrecognised greats who are near thier deathbeds - O'Toole has surprised them all and is still with us. Harris, Burton, Reed, Mitchum and O'Toole never won, because they were too independent of character, as well as not being of the right ethnic origin that the academy so unsurprisingly favours (hellraising is merely a public pretext) . O'Toole has since been further insulted by being nominated without winning for an 8th time, a new record.
His voice is like Chinese silk. He is so eloquent and so profound. He is definitely one of the greatest actors of all time. He deserved this a long time ago.
does this guy have a knighthood? ive always gone by the assumption he has, but then i hear he's barely won any awards which strikes me as being utterly ridiculous
Peter O Toole was magnificent in Lawrence Of Arabia. Columbia,. Sam Spiegel and David Lean offered Lawrence to Brando who refused the role and selected then unknown O Toole who took the role and ran with it to immortality. and O Toole should have won the Oscar but he was up against Gregory Peck who won and Jack Lemmon who was considered the dark horse for his brilliant Days Of Wine And Roses. Sometimes Oscar gets it wrong, and glad the Academy provided an Honorary Oscar to this great Actor.
She sounds drunk, shame on you Meryl. Now, the simple fact that this man never won a competitive award is an utter disgrace. What a gentleman, what an actor, greatest among the very greats. What a voice, instantly recognisable even with your eyes closed, such a handsome man, those mesmerising eyes, what an elegant and gracious speech. He puts all those inarticulate American monkeys to shame. He walks on stage to the music of Lawrence of Arabia....can't get any better than that.
O'Toole the best he elocution can't be matched except for Olivier great actor I don't like movies like The Lion in the Winter well O'Toole had me loving this movie great actor.
About damn time! When this man dies one day he will leave us with such fond memories, both on screen and off it. If ever I live to that age I would want to be like him. My zest for life still very much intact, and a boyish glitter in my eyes. Fantastic storyteller, legendary drinker, brilliant actor, charismatic personality and fascinating life. What a man.
@philipc67-Your eloquent & accurate comment about Peter O'toole is right on target. Watching this dramatic giant take a character and infuse it with life and that amazing articulate voice leaves the rest not even qualified to stand in his shadow. Whatever he took on, Beckett-Lawrence of Arabia-Lion in Winter-Lord Jim-Flavius Silva in" Masada" he crafted the emotions and delivered his lines with masterly grace and unusual force. Hollywood was intimidated by his tremendous talent.
It's a shame Peter O' Toole doesn't have his Oscar of his own when people like Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, George Clooney and jamie foxx have one decent actors mot great like Mr. O' Toole I saw the Lion in the Winter that;s not exactly the kind of movie i would normally watch but Peter had me completely engrossed and Lawrence of arabia please what a performance well i'm glad he has honorary but to me not good enough.
She sounds drunk, shame on you Meryl. Now, the simple fact that this man never won a competitive award is an utter disgrace. What a gentleman, what an actor, one of the few very, very greats. What a voice, instantly recognisable even with your eyes closed, what an elegant and gracious speech. He puts all those inarticulate American monkeys to shame. one of the better years where the best actors were invited in theatre!!!; and many generations; JACK,nicholas cage, kathy bates,,harrison ford, nicole kidman, michael caine, sean connery, cameron diaz,..and the best younger actor nowadays 6:03 minutes. Biggest!
I love the look he gives to Meryl Streep as he speaks of the "...sumptuous talent alive and well and with us now." [5:46] I only wish the director would have cut to a wide shot of Peter looking at Meryl.
Nice to see Peter finally getting what he deserves, but it's a disgrace that they haven't given him a 'real' oscar. By rights he should have a cabinet full of them as he can actually *act*. Not like these 'stars' who just play themselves in every bloody movie...
Awesome actor. I saw him in New York in Pygmalion and got his autograph. That was very cool BUT my house flooded in Katrina & the autograph was destroyed.
I love all the "i don't get it & who is this guy? & various other dumb as a mule expressions from the over-rated face-lifts of hollywood. The younger talent "cough" there doesn't even deserve to be in the same room as O'toole.
@Sloth55Chunk prbably like double that, i know he got nominated 8 times but he should have got a nomination forratatouille or maybe even dean spanley or something

Couldn't the talented Meryl Streep have learned her lines to introduce perhaps the most mesmerising actor of the 20th century? His fans MUST watch the David Lean AFI award show for his and Omar Sharif's class act there. So should Ms Streep and others like her, to learn how to pay sincere tribute with style. :P
Bravo, Mr O'Toole. Wikipedia informs us that you turned down a knighthood. You also once told the New York Times that "no one can take Jesus away from me". Amazing grace indeed, sir. :)
Peter O'Toole is one of those rare sort of men and artists who have built their image over important roles whether enigmatic or full of greatness. One of my favourite characters he ever played is Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston!
I think Peter O'toole is a brilliant actor, a bloody good storyteller and a man who is the consummate movie star...He has a wicked sense of humour and his performances have gone down in cinematic and theatrical history with a blaze of glory...Peter acts like a king, lives like a prince and drinks like a drunken sailor, well not anymore, but at one time he did...He knows everything about the game of cricket and knows a lot about a lot of things...What a beautiful voice and a brilliant mind.
It's unfortunate that he was up against people like Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Marlon Brando, De Niro and Ben Kingsley when he was nominated. But he is still nonetheless a top notch actor!
That was an epic entrance! I hope one day I can walk onto a stage and claim an Honorary award of some kind with the Lawrence of Arabia theme song playing in the background! Epic...just epic!
One of the last true actors still alive... Bless this man with a real Oscar people, because he more actor than what Hollywood could ever wet dream of creating now days.
Now I have a feeling that after this his speech, every one of those celebrities went out and watched O'toole films for the next few days thinking, "wow, if only I could act like that."
Actors just arent the same as the old greats like o toole, brando and mcqueen! They dont look half as good, almost dont seem to be as talented and they definetly dont steal the show and captivate an audience quite like the old pro's!
All of yall lay off Streep, she was just very nervous cause she doesn't like being on stage that 's why she was acting strange. She has enormous respect for her fellow actors and everyone knows that.
Top 10 unluckiest Hollywood figure for the oscar, comparing to their talents. (It's my opinion so don't bash) 1. Alfred Hitchcock 2. Stanley Kubrick 3. Martin Scorsese 4. Peter O' Toole 5. Richard Burton 6. Warren Beatty 7. Paul Newman 8. Randy Newman 9. Annette Benning 10. Meryl Streep (she should've won at least 4!!!)
They just gave him this award because they realized they constantly and consistently snubbed him -.- He deserved many of those Oscars he was nominated for.
One of my all time favourite actors - in fact ,thinking hard, I can't come up with one I like more. An extremely able and gifted man with a zest for living that seems special to Irishmen and even more so to Irish Yorkshire men. Being born - some little time after O'Toole - but only 10 miles down the road from his stomping ground in Leeds - I am pleased to think I have a couple of things in common with the great man.
He should have won all his nominations! All! lol I've been a fan of his since I was 14!Yep, Meryl Streep, whom I normally adore, was just off her game, wasn't she? Seems kinda rude...But O'Toole, ever the consummate artist, was so above it all, that, like all his movies, he is a jewel to watch. Bravo Pete ---you are the best!
He should have won all his Oscars! All! Including "Venus" after this award! My fave since I was 14! lol I adore Meryl Streep's work, but I agree with both chumbawumba16 and edw700 - she was kinda weird there...But he's the consummate professional and was so above it all, that, like his performances, he is a jewel to watch! Bravo Pete - you're the best!
Undoubtedly the most captivating acceptance speech for a lifetime achievement award.... and what a life! As LilDwarf says, I also hope that he wins Best Actor someday. Yet I cannot feel a tinge of sadness that such a moment will never come. If it does, we are all the richer for it. If it doesn't, then savour every moment that he has stepped onto the screen and delivered nothing short of a fine performance. The audience we're in the palm of his hand as he gave a lesson in how to say "thank you".
When i was watching lawrence of arabia i had a feeling that i was there with them not in front of my screen this is all Peter o'toole's great performance....

I don't think of his losses as "snubs." It just happened that he was always nominated alongside a much better performance, for example:
1962 Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird
1964 Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady
1968 Cliff Robertson in Charly
1969 John Wayne in True Grit (questionable win, but Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy was incredible)
1972 Marlon Brando in The Godfather
1980 Robert De Niro in Raging Bull
1982 Ben Kingsley in Gandhi
2006 Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland

SHAME on the Academy and everyone who never voted for Peter O' Toole, the
very BEST ACTOR to ever come out of Ireland. He deserved to win an Oscar in
competition several times, such as for "Lawrence of Arabia" in 1963 and for
"Lion in Winter" in 1968 (he was no less good as Katharine Hepburn who won her
second Oscar in a row that year), or how about his hysterical role as an actor afraid
to act in "My Favorite Year"? Peter O' Toole is a Living Legend the likes of which
we shall never see again.

''Honorary Oscar''? Fuck that, give him a real Oscar!

Now I have a feeling that after this his speech, every one of those celebrities went out and watched O'toole films for the next few days thinking, "wow, if only I could act like that."

What utter class. I wish today's stars would behave with just a fraction of this man's dignity.

They just gave him this award because they realized they constantly and consistently snubbed him -.- He deserved many of those Oscars he was nominated for.

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y!!!!!!
Bloody hell, how long does it take the Oscars to figure it out
and post this clip!!??
Peter O'Toole is a bloody LEGEND in cinema, and you wankers
post clips of Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin hosting your bloody show
but not Mr O'Toole winning his 'Honorary Oscar' till just now?
Pure Rubbish! It is long overdue! A discredit to your show and site.
I'm just glad in the end you thought enough of this LEGEND to post
this at all.

@British0Pixie I'm still hoping he can win one for Best Actor. Fucking can't believe he didn't nab one in "Lawrence"... it's all fucking political...
jolorulz 1 year ago
@jolorulz
Agreed! There were other roles as well, but
'Lawrence Of Arabia' is one of the Top 10 films of all time and he should of won. = /
Thank goodness he was given the BAFTA for that performance. We did the right thing at least.
Unfortunately the Oscars have a history of not giving those who deserve to win their propers.
Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction, etc) Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler),
Whoopi Goldberg (Color Purple), Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption), John Hurt -TheElephant Man, etc.
