Haha. As I watch this, I'm kinda just sitting here at home at my desk doing my own little thing, kinda half-ass paying attention... volume's moderately low, but... What keeps catching my ear is the phrase, "Porno Groupies". Every time I hear it I instantly turn my head to the screen, "Whaa?... Oh. Four Note Grouping. I knew that". Then here you go again, "Porno Groupies".
"What?... Where?
Man, you must say that at least fifty times. Porno Groupies.
Im sure all his first drum solo is, is a herta, 5 times, plus 1 extra 16th note, around the snare, and four toms, with the 4th note always accented, atleast thats how I play it
Does anyone know of any videos that discuss Neil's signature ride rhythm? I've timed it out and the notes make sense to me, but when I play it, it just sounds wrong
Aight I'm very sure about this now. What Neil and you are playing is simply the herta, except the last two notes are accented. Just want to clear up misconceptions and such.
But man... just those 2 accents, and the sound of the lick changes completely! Amazing.
At the part which you demonstrate the differences between the herta and the 'Neil Peart' thing, did you just change the placing of the accents, or did you also change the notation of the notes as well?
Hertas are 2 32nd notes followed by 2 16ths, but what about the one that Neil uses? I've been trying to look around for the answer, but forums and other videos don't have them :( I know Carter uses the 32nd/16th version though.
Wow, thanks for this video it helped alot. But Im having problems playing the four note grouping and when I try to play it it sounds like what you played at 3:25 (a herta?) rather than those important fills in YYZ. I can definitely hear the difference but after trying to play it and doing so incorrectly for so long now I can't get my hands to complete the 4 note grouping in such quick succession! Please help me. Thanks
I hear this or something like it in the last big tom fill in Witch Hunt (studio version). Not sure if you agree. I slowed it down to half speed and what I hear is (caps are the accents) concert toms: lrlR-lrlR-lrlR-lrlR (then continues on the closed toms LR-LR-LR). I enjoy your videos.
Ray - thank you very much - I don't play the drums but in my mind and heart - but I could follow your instructions......and enjoyed the session..sincerely appreciate you putting this up
I think your a good drummer, but I'm not digging the ghost strokes on your snare while you play it sounds muddy. I had to get away from that when I played it should only be used sometimes.
I didn't read all your comments, but simply put, the grouping times out to a triplet with the accent on third subdivision - closely related to a herta. The herta is also a four note grouping, accenting the flam at the beginning. When you think about this cluster, it's played like there's a flam at the beginning only it's not accented. My two cents.
It makes me really happy to know that youtube actually has people that know what they are talking about. Not to be a critic, of course, but i do wish you wouldn't play with such loose pinkies. That's not really a big deal anyway haha. And I really wish you had some good recording gear on those dw's. I would love to hear that kit recorded well =]
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
Go ahead! I'm just happy to have been able to help. You're an excellent player, and I'm glad I could assist you in more accurately playing this rather complicated rhythm (don't blame me if you start overthinking, though =D)
From your comments and how it sounds, it sounds like a sixteenth note triplet into a single sixteenth note, followed by a sixteenth note triplet followed by a single sixteenth note, etc. This takes up exactly three-quarters of a single beat, and is, as you say, more "lilting" than a herta, which you correctly identify as two 32nd notes and two 16th notes.
@advancewarsaddict Exactly correct,... It's only 4 note's of six-tuplet's,... no matter if they are the 1st 4 note's, the last 4 notes, or in the middle of the six-tuplet's,... and they would be known, at least the in "Metal" circles as, Quad's.
Quad's = only 4 secuential note's of a sixtuplet.
I see you had the paragons before the paistes. they are nice sounding cymbals i just sold mine.
You should spend money on mics as opposed to new gear though because you can make a not so good sounding drum sound beautiful with the right sound through a mixer,
Good eye! That's a 16" Paiste Signature Reflector Heavy Full crash..LOVE the reflector crashes...very silvery and smooth! I now also have a 20" Reflector Heavy Full crash on my far left.
great vid ray! although is it just me , or does your two floor toms sound the same?... seems there no tonal differrence in the 2 and clearly the 16 should be deeper, (looks like you have a 14 and 16 there,.. either way ,.. the last tom) lol, could just be my ears though, ive been playing for about 25 years so theyve been put through some abuse!
Thanks man! Yeah I was cringing while editing and mixing, realizing that the toms were horribly out of tune, but I wasnt going to re-do everything at that point! Thanks,
Good job, Ray. Other places where Neil uses this concept I think are the long fill at the beginning of "Digital Man", and the long snare solo in "Where's My Thing?". Neil's playing is full of little neat tricks and gimmicks like those. That's another reason why it's so much fun to really learn and play this stuff!
Hey Ray, I respect your ability to chop chop on Rush. You, Martin myself could possibly think about chop chopping on some original drum groove stuff, possibly a collab of the 3 of us doing something ,,,,,like Weckl, Gadd Coliuta......
something done in the spirit of creating a cool tune or 3way drumming solo,,,,since we all do somethng a little different as out respective strong suits....
seriously man. The most common mistake ALL rush fans make or just Neil fans make is they dont realize the proper way to pronounce his name. I'm sure 99% or so of fans have that realization after starting out. Or even for a long time.

sound quality could be a bit better, but no big deal, otherwise, GREAT video, and killer set ! I myself am also a Neil fan and your technique helps me to play the Rush songs I do, play on Ray!
Just something I'd like to mention Ray. I really recognized this pattern from another older tune, but I couldn't put my finger on it. After listening to you play the pattern over the quarter note bass drum I realized exactly what it was. It is three 16th note triplets (1/2 of a beat), followed by a 16th note (1/4 of a beat), making the total value 3/4 of one beat, so 4 of these patterns make up 3 beats.
