I do not know why all other interpreters of Rachmaninoff are discriminated in favour or Horowitz. Emil gilels is extraordinary in any composer in any genre and Rachmaninoff is his forte.
@cantkeepitin This one is better than the 1940 recording :-) The best Rach 3rd I know, except for Rachmaninoff's recording. Wish there was a live Gilels performance of Rach 3rd.
@Bret6464 Yeah, like the famous Chopin concerto! This is also much better than the Ormandy studio record. On Rach again: I prefer the 40ies record of Gilels/Kondrashin, everything is so fresh, so young, so powerful. In the Cluytens record - which is very good - there is still a bit the studio atmosphere.
Curious, Rachmaninoff, in a hammock in his garden, on the wooden stairs of his dacha or seated on the couch of his living room, is always wearing a formal suit and a tie...
What a marvelous music, and Emil Gilels when young, played it like no one else ever did, with the Moscow orchestra: I've heard it over and again for many years and can't but feel the same overwhelming emotion every time.

@gkollias14
Volodos, Andsnes, Moguilevsky, Berman and many others made wonderful recordings of this great Piano Concerto as well.
