The Americans could have learned a lot from the Malaya Emergency. Britain and Malaya successfully defeated a communist insurgency with a relatively small ground force. Britain used intelligence to defeat the communists, the Americans used brute force and were defeated because of their ignorance and brutality. This is why Britain never intervened in Vietnam, because they knew the American strategy was doomed to failure.

The confrontation never reached the high levels of combat as Vietnam did. The UK were able to isolate the Communist guerillas from the population. Without the “sea of peasants” for the Communist “fish” to swim in they died out. In Malaysia, Communism did not appeal to the majority of the native Malaysian population.

That's why the US casualties in VN was high.

@redxenos No the US does the same thing as Britain does in the Malaya conflict. We had Green Berets and Navy Seals in Vietnam. But the difference is that NVA has a conventional warfare just like the US unlike Malaya which is it's a low-intensity war. The problem is that the North Vietnam was shared by it's ally China which allowed quicker and assistance to flow easily one of the reasons why the casualty rates among the US is higher. Malaysia doesn't support communism. Vietnam was divided.

@The98Funnyman Actually the official war with Malaysia ended in 1960,but the SAS were still in Malaysia,having skirmishes with the communists,as well as training the armed forces.The Australian SAS lived in the jungle&took the fight to the enemy,as there were pockets of resistance in those areas.I think they left in the late 60s as one trooper carried an M16 assault rifle,in a picture that ive seen in a book,,as they entered US service in and around the mid-60s.
