I think of this every time someone questions my reasons as to why I want to join the military. My reasons are to deep and personal for anyone to understand who doesn't get it immediately and so I normally stop trying to explain and I just shrug and tell them "Some get it and some don't"
Anyone know the name of this music track? I went out and shelled out the bucks to get the expanded 3-CD music score to this movie but I can't seem to find it. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT HERE?!? Please and thank you.
@MaciekGrudi - No...the strings in this one so much softer...they BELONG in the background. I'm haunted by this piece, and esp by not being able to find it. I hope I can locate it someday but if it isn't out there somewhere by now, it pbly never will be. It just does that thing where it "speaks" to me, and for me that's rare.
there are actually men who feel this way, not everyone does though, only the men who were born to fight, it's like a gift that is given to very few people, almost like a talent, you may know a total bad ass in school but he would be too pussy to fight, and you might know a loser who feels this way
I talked with my counselor the other day and she asked me about what job I wanted in the future. I told her I wanted to join the military in an infantry MOS. She asked me why and I couldn't really think of any way to explain it, so then she started going on about how I was pretty much wasting my time and I should start planning for my future more. I thought of this scene as I was walking out of there.
@dietcoke759 look the military is a good option for most, but she is right that you should plan a little more, I know plenty of people who joined for the wrong reasons, got stuck in a job they didn't like and didn't really improve after they left, you want a good job in the military, especially all you SF wannabes, you have to be wicked smart, math, science, etc. Delta guys and DEVGRU guys are lifers, trust me once your in the real deal, you'll know then, until then have a plan.
i watch it sometimes to make my self comy.....he sais it all....if its in you.....u know......90 percent of them has no idea what we felt....i would do it again and again and again
I don't understand this logic. If they all just left the army they wouldn't need to kill people for "the guy next to them". I seriously hope they have a higher purpose than that for doing what they are doing.
@Musketor they dont go over there with the intent to kill anyone, pick up a fucking book and read sometime. guys give their lives so punks like you can talk trash about them..those guys went over to help because warlords were commiting mass murders of innocent people..I've seen what war does to people...you know nothing more then what your fatass sees on CNN..so take another toke and be lazy and eat you liberal ass..
@Musketor do you trust the rest of the world to leave their armies too while you leave yours? no, the moment a country's vulnerable others will take everything they have, look at the US in the middle east, the moment Iraq was weak enough, Afghanistan was in chaos, we jumped right in. And now their waiting for Iran.
isn't it funny how you can always tell when a war film is made by soldiers, it's things like this verses fucking green zone with matt goddamn damon "oh no man our goverments lied to us soldiers lets go get em"
nation building in shitholes like somalia, afghanistan, or iraq, is a waste of american blood and money. hey hoot...why are our boys wasting their lives in 3rd world shit holes?
@labartic You should be asking yourself that question, not a soldier. The military doesn't choose the USA's conflicts. They do whatever they are asked to by civilian authority; that's why it's called serving your country. The politicians you elect send them to wars which your tax dollars pay for, so don't bitch at guys like Hoot, they're just doing their job. If you don't like what our country is doing overseas, then do your job as a citizen and try to change it at home.
Hoot is a total badass. He was a convincing character, you can imagine coming across guys like Hoot in the military, guys who were just born to soldier.
This speech and Hoot's other one are what make me proud to be a soldier because its the truth. I love when he goes "You know what I think? I think that when the shit hits the fan, and the bullets start flyin, all the politics and all the bullshit go right out the window. Just get your men back home safe and youve done your job sergeant." and then ths one, thats the god damn truth, its all abut the man next to you, thats it.
One day i will be a soldier, and not because i want to shoot,to blow up stuff, to kill, go to war and experience war like most people who want to be soldiers do.
I will be a soldier because of the man next to me, my fellow soldiers and the civilians, the people that will need our help. And if some of you guys think that this sounds stupid, i dont care, because you wont understand my thinking anyway.
its just like Hoot says, most people wont understand.
your the typical mindless drone which the u.s army is looking for. no idea who you're helping, or why you're helping, you just wanna help and think you're doing some good.
when the u.s army invaded afghanistan and iraq, they only helped themselves. to something in particular. i am certain that is not what drives you to wanting to go overseas and serve your country.
@dsdan83 Well. Whatever the government wants, they can have it... Just to say it won't help them the least bit. But i believe that the individual soldier makes those people feel safe. The turn out rate in Iraq for voting was phenomenal. Way beyond what pentagon officials said, even with the Taliban attacking the toll booths. Today, we can walk the streets without having a kevlar vest, helmet, and m16 standard rifle as procedure had it almost 6 years ago. Like in Baghdad and Fellujah.
if there still any doubters out there, now you've really made it clear you are the mindless combat drone which the u.s goverment/army start drooling over. if you still made the least effort to keep up with the actualities in baghdad and various other iraqi cities, you would be aware there isn't a single more dangerous thing to do for a u.s soldier then to patrol the streets unprotected and unarmed. a cultural shift doesn't happen over night, nor over 8 years.
@dsdan83 Oh yah... Iraq is now amongst the safest countries in the Middle East, a reporter I read about, Oliver North, Vietnam Marine Veteran, at last said, that after over 8 years of conflict, they could walk the streets without a Kevlar vest, and there was no need to have a required M16 in that city. Baghdad became a safe zone. Today, do you ever really hear anything from Iraq. No, because of the fact that if it were anything, probably just one or two soldiers of the Iraqi army killed.
there are still bomb blasts in baghdad on a very regular basis, and 99% of those blasts carry civilian casualties with them. baghdad authority have peace in the city under control as far as brazilian police are winning the battle from violent drug gangs in sao paolo. just a matter of time before a suicide bomber does something violent and deadly again somewhere in the middle of baghdad.
@dsdan83 That's a call for bullshit. Winning hearts and minds is what we did. And in so doing, Baghdad police forces were trained by real in-country SWAT specialists and special forces. The number of Taliban in the middle east has gone down, ever since the second insurgency in 2006. After that, they have relied on IEDs, which in this case, our troops trained thos Iraqis to always be careful and techniques in explosive detection and disposal. Afghan is the worse of the two.
u are so ridiculously uninformed & seriously brainwashed, it's just perplexing. winning hards and minds has barely, only barely been any sort of significant achievement by the u.s achievement. but over a stretch of 8 years, there's not a single person associated w/ this war who doesn't feel utterly frustrated at what little progress has actually been made. the u.s, especially under bush, thought peace thru tyranny was the most efficient way to win h&m but they were dead wrong.
@dsdan83 If not, then why are there hardly any news reports? Why are there no active retreats from the area? Why is it that we have left Iraq on good terms? Why is Afghanistan still a main target with the Taliban? Why was Osama hiding in Pakistan? Why didn't the Pakistanis go after Osama? Why do we pay millions of dollars to Pakistan in the first place? Why are there much more supporters for our soldiers than there are protestors worldwide? Because at least men like my cousin chose to fight.
that you seem completely incapable of answering all those question yourself, merely again, and perfectly stipulates, you're total ignorance towards the facts surrounding these wars and seriousy brings into question you're true desire as to how passionately you are in wanting to conflict yourself in this fight. btw, just smidgen of FYI, the u.s hasn't "left iraq".
because i am not the one who needs them answered. if you truly wanna serve your country in these two wars then it would be extremely wise if you delved into the full scope of these wars, why they were started, what has been achieved so far. and if you're a reasonable young bloke hopefully you'll come to the conclusion these wars make absolutely no sense. and should the tragedy befall upon you in which you were to be killed in action, it most certainly would have been in vain.
@dsdan83 To this day, more and more Afghan and Iraqi civilians are looking to us as protectors. In fact, many have resorted to us for bomb disposal. Only thing is, Afghanistan was worse on infrastructure and economy than Iraq. Which is why it is harder to contain Taliban movement and attacks in the former. Yet, if this explains much. Afghanistan is THE number one producer in Opium. 90% of the world's opium is grown there. It was a multi million dollar cash crop.
@dsdan83 Continuing after the last one. Russia fucked up Afghanistan after their ten year war with them. IN that, over 4 million mines were planted and forgotten. And after '89, has made the highest toll in child amputees in as little as 20 years. And the "bullshit" i said about ignorance of never going there is true. The only truth you'll ever get is from going there, and coming home. Seeing is believing, but inference makes up for nothing. You can only assume so much till you look like an ass.
@dsdan83 I'm not a mindless freak. If anything, the person who chooses not to go, has chosen ignorance over truth. You really want to get your point across? Then join the service, and see what its like over there. And oh I intend to join the service. My faith in God, the faith i have in the men I meet, and the trust i put in the drill instructors and higher up, will bring me through it. And if i die, I know I fought for something you refused to fight for, because you're selfish and singleminded.
lol "not to go is ignorance", that is the most supreme form of bullshit i've heard in quite some time. the bush admin's decision of invading iraq was nothing but totally and utterly, immoral, contemptuous, disgusting, and beyond all - illegal. the soldiers that followed were all brainwashed drones, not the people who stayed behind in protest. if you die, you'll just be another statistic and you may be honoured with a small notice in the local paper.
@lachrise83 You're right. People do not even think that it is a dirty job...A job that has to be done, for them, country, and above all for a mate next to you.
Y'know what I think? Don't really matter what I think. Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that shit just goes right out the window.
Pure Propaganda. You should care for the reasons or else you are just being a mindless drone for those in power. Soldiers swear an Oath to the Constitution of the United States, not the President. Somalia was a unconstitutional conflict, so is Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Bring the troops home and defend this country, not fight for special interests.
Watch the Documentary "Restrepo" Its the real soldiers talking about how war really is. None of this hollywood bullshi t. these men have all my respect. Blackhawk down is a good movie but the actors are not american soldiers.
I love this movie, this is one reason why I joined the military.. Not to just defend freedom and to serve our country but it is also about the guy next to you, cause when shit goes crazy down range, you dont think about your country or family, you think about the guy next to you cause its up to you to watch his back and make sure he comes back home alive and vise versa.. Hooah!!
@Davila361 lol u no they dont say hooah right? not trying to piss you off or anything thats just what my brother told me, what branch and division you with?
"they wont understand, they wont understand why we do it, they wont understand..its about the men next to us, and thats it, its all it is"....war is enevitable, and will never stop, ,world peace is just another fantasy, a fairy tale. all we can do it protect the innocent and "the men next to you"
1) Marines = Hoo-Rah.. 2) Army is Hoo-Ahh. 99% of you won't ever know/understand the sacrifice. But, like what is said, we do what we do because we have to.
@mtavares92 - Being a soldier is about putting the mission, the ideal, and the other people of the world (even those whom you have never met and most of which will never know you or your sacrifice) all ahead of yourself. The Rest are just details.
Awesome movie and very touching scene about why Service members do what we do. Only thing I don't like about the movie is how Eversmann is made out to be a hero but in real life he really didn't do much in the conflict seeing as how his Chalk was lost almost as soon as they hit the ground...
HOAH! is Army OOHRAH is Marines and in both exclamations, I say nothing could be closer to the truth. Because they would for me, because I would for them. It's not about the fight, it's about protecting your own. It's about seeing them hug their families when they come home, having a beer and not having to talk about it, a look is all thats needed and we understand. A nod, a smile a twinkle in the eye that says, we came home together, dead or alive.
one of the best movies ive ever seen. some parts are just plain out incredible, and some parts are sad, yet understandable. i cant believe this is based on a true story. god bless the men and women who died in this battle.
the real soldier that eric bana played as was "Norm Hooten", he really was on delta squad and the stuff he did in the movie portrayed what he did in the real thing. You can look him up on google. His name is Norm Hooten.
The absolute best explanation of why our service men and women do what they do. I hope to lead and stand right next to these kind of guys in the very near future. HOOAH!
I think of this every time someone questions my reasons as to why I want to join the military. My reasons are to deep and personal for anyone to understand who doesn't get it immediately and so I normally stop trying to explain and I just shrug and tell them "Some get it and some don't"
