I loved this mans music since I first heard it! Set a bar inside me, all other music had to compare to it, or else it was "less than" even to this day. I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, used to do my best j.b. imitation of that shoe slide, pull up my pants by the belt. Got a good laugh from all my older sibs. & I'm white. & I don't care! This is just some smooth music, the best! I suppose if you feel it deep down...it becomes part of who you are. J.B. was just friggin' cool, period.
Thank you for posting this, listening to James takes me back to the days of sliding across the front porch on one leg, stopping and checking myself before getting to the mashed potatoes. or the jerk, the horse, the monkey, nobody driving by shooting, we had too much fun together.
Emil Carter, One of my most rememberable moments's was meeting "MACEO" my Sax playing IDOL, at a James Brown Concert at the Hemisphere Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Mickey and the Soul Generation opened the show with IRON LEG. Mr. Tom Jones AKA (TOMMY YOUNG) a local radio DJ at KAPE was responsible for getting the opening spot to promote our first recording IRON LEG. You should have been there when James shouted out" THIS IS A HIT his first number. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag.
I remember as a little girl, my sis turned 13 mom and pop's got her a stereo for her first party! We tore it up!! True soul and funk. Does anyone sound like this anymore???
@theperfecthuman I think it was 1965 because I was about 13 years old and we had a record shop in our neighborhood and he would play all the hits with a loud speaker
blasting off the side of the building..it was awesome.
@theperfecthuman This was released in 1965 or 1966 when I was in 8th or 9th grade. I remember because I was a young tereenager tryin to get with it when this came out. It came out as a two sided 45 rpm. I also remember the tune because I was an aspiring sax player and Maceo's solo on this was some of my first inspiration

You're right. I remember when it came out,we would play the 45 over and over just to hear the barritone sax solo start at the very end. On the other side ,if you had a good needle on your record player, you could hear him say,"hey" as the barritone started to play. I'm told that this is where Masio auditioned after getting out of the army and played tenor and alto .
was this song written about drugs?? as in, papaz gotta brand new bag, no drag. haha reminds me of drugs the naughty bad evil drugs. hahahahaha drugs, my son 2day u could die, b4 u might, go get drugs n live cash
I love this song too! I love the shorter version and am even more appreciative of this version as well! I love the saxophone solo towards the end! Simply amazing! Cut it short, speed it up, however you dice this song...one element remains true...it's got soul!!!
@Nikoz7Makaveli the origin of OG was from the CRIPS who called themselves the O.G. in 1974. Then later on added gangstas. but it was from the Eight Tray Gangster Crips. used way before tupac shakur was around so it isnt really a tupac term just one people like to use to think of 2pac as being the OG in the music business. but i guess every business, music genre, or anything could have an OG..
The song that cemented my FUNKY WHITE BOY status.
I was about 9 years old...and SOULED OUT.
Tower Of Power, soon to follow, made this my kind of music for LIFE.
