I've ALWAYS said u never ever really own your property. Not as long as there's property taxes. Sure, maybe you paid off your mortgage and hold the deed in your hot little hands -- but fall on hard times, become unable to pay your property taxes & . . . BOOM! The local govt will take your real estate. Oh, they'll give u time to work it out, but if u can't come up with the taxes, the prop is gone. This is nationwide. Tell me, when did we agree to such a system?! How stupid are we?!
