Your videos are so helpful. I have a quick question. I rooted my tablet using the steps you provided in part 1 and part 2. During the final root process the system asked if I wanted to block OTA updates from Barnes and Noble. Therefore do I still need to complete this step using Titanium backup to block OTA updates. I was wondering if XDA has now eliminated this step and if it is included in the root software?
I cannot seem to be able to freeze software manager. When I try to freeze it, it seems to take forever to do so. When I check my software version, it still shows 1.4.0. How can I get this to work?
where do I get device manager 2.3.4? i used your rootguide and have followed all of the instructions but i can't find anything about device manger 2.3.4
@outtenrebecca you already have it. are you wondering where you get the files to patch it with? check the description of the movie and follow the link to xda forums.
@albertcwertz i found it. for some reason the backup/restore list would not populate with a list of apps. I just received a black screen. it came up though. i have had an issue with both the honeycomb launcher and GoLauncher. any recommendations as to which launcher works best?

The device was not frozen. I then proceeded to freeze it, unfroze it and the turned it off, then back on. still no info populated in those fields. I just downloaded the anycut app but do not know how to use it.
I followed all the steps to the T and now reflect 9.9.9 under software version. However, my Nook Tablet now reflects the Owner and Account under settings as UNAVAILABLE when those fields were populated with my information prior. Did I skip a step? How can I restore my info so I can get B&N apps and books?
@albertcwertz if doesnt help, look at video on bypassing registration. there is a comment there telling you how to access the registration setting again in the comments to video by a viewer
operation block B&N successful.... But the defrosting "device Manager Service 2.3.4" has been kind of stuck on that screen and its acting like its loading..... But I went back to about your nook page and I think as a result of it being stuck here is doesn't reflect 9.9.9.... can I just delete the files and redo the process??? thanks for the prompt reply last time...

Oh I used zedomax way of Rooting I dont if that effects this process and use j-zip for extraction please let me know before theres a new update ~lol~ thanks man
Ok so I got my Nook rooted, OTA block installed Software version says 9.9.9. However I can not access the B&N shop? I loaded the three files to my sda card in the backup folder. Do I have to start over???
@greatscoob did you freeze the device manager file? if so, unfreeze it... did you register it? did you debloat it? debloating or never registering will prevent you from buying from barnes and noble aswell
Hey Albert thanks alot! I was able to root my new nook tablet thanks to your video's.
But I'm having one big issue- my Nook's (which is at v9.9.9) Android Market stopped working. It opens up but then I have to force close it. I get a message saying "The application Market (process.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try agian." A similar thing happens when I try to download things from b/n
Can you offer any suggestions on how to fix? Other than this everything works perfectly
@greatscoob restart it ;) I dont think it is actually stuck, maybe a glitch? but if you restart your nook then the message goes away and you can do other things in titanium backup
Albert, just want to say great job on the videos, root and OTA block works great, easy to follow thank you for making it easy. all you need is albert and xda and your nook is an android
@albertcwertz Thank you so much. Finally found the app and everything works great. Rooted and blocked the ota updates. This nook is awesome now. Much thanks.
I have my nook rooted to Go Launcher; every time I restart the nook, it's installing a new software. When I unlock my nook, it opens up to the nook home instead of the android home. How can I change this?
I have the unzipme files on sdcard but when I go to titanium-backup/restore-batch, there are nothing to restore. Can you help, cant figure it out. Wont go to 9.9.9, keeps going from unknown to 1.4.0. Thanks.
@albertcwertz I'm having trouble with the OTA block. It's been stuck on "FreezingDeviceManagerService2.3.4".How long should this take? I already saved the 3 files to my Titanium Backup Folder. Any thoughts?
I might suggest that this took a long time for me until I used Dropbox. I tried to move files over to SDCard using USB numerous times and Titanium would not see them. I used Dropbox once and moved them over using "export" from Dropbox to Titanium backup.
@greatscoob depends on how you downloaded it. Was it sideloaded or installed through the android market? If through the market it should be in your app drawer. If it is not there, try reboot and it should appear. If you sideloaded it without installing it immediately, you may need to use a file explorer like es explorer to find the apk file and install it.
I've done everything right... I think. But I can't seem to get the 3 files into the Titanium Backup folder on my sdcard. Any thoughts on how I can make that work? I'm trying to do so via the USB. Thanks so much!
@MikePitsikoulis auto mount has to be enabled, connect usb to pc and tablet, folder should appear on pc for SD card then copy files to the folder. All else fails, use drop box. It is handy and free.
Albert, in one of the comments below you state you don't need to freeze or unfreeze any files. However, in the video you freeze the device manager app. Do you need the paid version of Titanium Backup to freeze the app or am I missing something. Thanks for your help.
@albertcwertz its not a question more of a tip. i was successful using your video but i had to reset my device to get the files to show up for some reason.
I'm having issues getting titanium to recognize the files. Tried extracting files with both a mac and pc. Made sure the sd card is mounted and debugging enabled. Anything I'm missing? Thanks so much for your work.
Hey so I got it rooted (thank you!), but I can't sign in to the android market. It keeps saying it can't establish a reliable data connection to the server...any ideas on what's wrong?

Thanks for putting this together. First time with Android, and I'm a bit stuck. I went through the process described, but when I try to update my USB drivers with those in the provided zip file, I get the message that "the drivers are already up to date" and the computer won't update the drivers.
I did try using the method described by Indirect earlier, and I couldn't get that to work. Titantium back wouldn't run on my NT - said that I didn't have root access.
@mogul518 you have to force the drivers on. i have a video made about troubleshooting the drivers and there is a thread at xda on it. more information there

@ADAMaguirre gingerbread. 2.3. we do nto have the capability of changing the rom yet for the nook tablet. Just changing the launcher. Here I am using ADW launcher
@albertcwertz in ur part two video u had us use honeycomb and i noticed with that the "Download" for the files does not pop up and when i export to the titanium the files either have a red ? on them and dont show up under run.
yeah i understand man cause ive been on your videos heavy just trying to redo my steps (unroot, root, patch) iam doing it right now again cause i had the 9.9.9 and i turned off my nook and the update was there downloading so. i guess iam s.o.l. until then but thanks man for ya time on Christmas have a good on
@Nicklw100 i was thinking about it more and it sounds like the patch downloaded and installed without you knowing and then you put ota block on top of 1.4.1.... so try your best to revert back to 1.4.0, try factory restore with 8 failed boots. see if ti works. i will be back on tomorrow
@Nicklw100 I would shoot a quick video of this and post for us to look at. We need to confirm this. Then I would suggest using 1.4.0 revert with sdcard, the try rerooting again and block OTA. The OTA block patch makes it to where it doesnt even check for an update so it should have never downloaded and you are the only person reporting this. We need evidence in the form of a video and try to revert back and see if it happens again... sorry
I got all that everything right the 9.9.9 but what iam saying is that when turned off then turned back on my tablet the update downloaded. I am pretty good at rooting just wondering if something else has happened wit the updates. But my ota wasnt block
@Nicklw100 can you still use android market? can you still sideload? can you still purchase from barnes and noble market? super user still there? titanium backup still gains super user permissions? If so, update never installed and still have root
alright did everything root, backup ect and did everything right. BUT when i restarted my nook the update still downloaded AND my device still said 9.9.9. any solutions?
thank u. if it wasnt for genisus like u people like me would have nearly as much fun. thanks for always answering questions as well. speaking of which, what launcher are u using on your nook when u shot this video?
@albertcwertz You make awesome tutorials...unfortunately i cant get zip file to work, i woke up with update 1.4.1 then i did a factory restore, then put the zip file on a 4gbclass4 sd powered on and off boots normal tried factory restore with sd card in no luck...any ideas, or do i have to wait for 1.4.2 b&n says coming out next week to enable sideloading again
Okay, that's what I figured. So since the update was done through wifi without me allowing it, once I factory restore and try to reroot the system, will it try to update before I get it rooted again?
I posted on your rooting video about the update screwing up my root. How can I get titanium backup if it won't let me onto the android market anymore?
Thanks... great video overall. However, I think you take a few things for granted for the Android newbs... First note that Titanium Backup requires an SD Card to be installed in the Nook Tablet. Before I installed the card, I couldn't bring up the list of apps to freeze/unfreeze. Also, note that freezing/unfreezing requires the paid version. If freezing/unfreezing isn't required, then you might want to make a note so that people don't pay for the app unnecessarily.
@albertcwertz Yeah... I'm an iOS guy, and I've been jailbreaking/unlocking for a while, but I'm new to Android. I definitely appreciate your videos, as the instructions are on XDA forums are often written with the assumption that the reader has extensive experience with Android. Thanks!
I tried the factory restore but it is still 1.4.1. The xda forms has a fix but I can't get it to work and can't post in the development forums there. I found the rooting instructions to be the same. only followable with a video and Albert does a good job.
any chance of you doing a video of restoring from 1.4.1 back to 1.4 having some trouble with the magic SDcard instructions from Adam Outler. The video's are really helpful.
can anyone help, i'm struggling with the xda forums, i have this rooted and thought a was well till i realized that i still have the stupid nook home page. I can't get to options in the titanium, i believe b/c of the home, or i'm just doing something flat out wrong...
Hello,

When I use Titanium Backup, all I get is an "overview" screen.

@bmbenblog Never mind. Seems I forgot to put my SD card back in. Works like a charm. Thanks again, you saved Christmas!!!

Don't forget to set the USB Debugging. This made the difference for me. Thanks for this video! It helped me get mine set so I don't get unrooted.

so to block the OTA, your nook must be rooted first? and I wont be able to accept future updates that B&N will send out?

@albertcwertz You make awesome tutorials...unfortunately i cant get zip file to work, i woke up with update 1.4.1 then i did a factory restore, then put the zip file on a 4gbclass4 sd powered on and off boots normal tried factory restore with sd card in no luck...any ideas, or do i have to wait for 1.4.2 b&n says coming out next week to enable sideloading again

@35raystang video on how to uploading now, will be done by morning
albertcwertz 2 months ago
Okay, that's what I figured. So since the update was done through wifi without me allowing it, once I factory restore and try to reroot the system, will it try to update before I get it rooted again?
staceya0716 2 months ago
@staceya0716 it will try, so you need to make sure wifi is off while you are not using it for rooting

I posted on your rooting video about the update screwing up my root. How can I get titanium backup if it won't let me onto the android market anymore?
staceya0716 2 months ago
@staceya0716 must restore back to 1.4.0 and reroot then install titanium backup

Thanks... great video overall. If freezing/unfreezing isn't required, then you might want to make a note so that people don't pay for the app unnecessarily.
kreg37 2 months ago
@kreg37 freeze unfreeze is not required to do this and neither is the paid version.

@albertcwertz Yeah... I'm an iOS guy, and I've been jailbreaking/unlocking for a while, but I'm new to Android. I definitely appreciate your videos, as the instructions are on XDA forums are often written with the assumption that the reader has extensive experience with Android. Thanks!
kreg37 2 months ago
I tried the factory restore but it is still 1.4.1. The xda forms has a fix but I can't get it to work and can't post in the development forums there. I found the rooting instructions to be the same. only followable with a video and Albert does a good job.
speljester 2 months ago
@speljester put the restore file on an sd card, put it in and reboot the device. it should automatically attempt to restore from sdcard

Albert-
What battery widget is that?
evilsockz 2 months ago
@evilsockz battery solo widget, it is a free one.
albertcwertz 2 months ago
@albertcwertz cool, thanks.
evilsockz 2 months ago
Its hilarious and very telling, when it took you so long to find something for free in BN's app store. This is the reason everyone wants to sideload.
jason3fc 2 months ago
@jason3fc yea ;) I forgot initially which one let me sort by price low to high. android market is so much easier to browse
albertcwertz 2 months ago
any chance of you doing a video of restoring from 1.4.1 back to 1.4 having some trouble with the magic SDcard instructions from Adam Outler. The video's are really helpful.
speljester 2 months ago
@speljester You can do the factory restore also.
evilsockz 2 months ago
@speljester maybe, If it happens to me I will do it. Right now all three of my tablets are setup for my wife and kids and already under the tree...

can anyone help, i'm struggling with the xda forums, i have this rooted and thought a was well till i realized that i still have the stupid nook home page. I can't get to options in the titanium, i believe b/c of the home, or i'm just doing something flat out wrong...
mbaur1978 2 months ago
@mbaur1978 do search for app in search menu or just download a launcher by searching for it online. like "go launcher apk"

Thank you! I'm a real noob, but thanks to you and XDA Developers Forum I'm going to buy, root and block OTA updates on a Nook Tablet.
