That was so lovely. Thank you for a lift in my day. It's such a charming and poignant song, both in melody and lyrics. I'm so glad when I find my favorite music kept alive by others. I can't think of much better uses for YouTube :)
As a guitarist myself I can appreciate so much about your playing. So clean, precise and sensitive to the length and tone of each note. Not to mention your brilliant arrangements & your own distinct sound. Bravo, my friend!
I know this may sound a bit desperate but could you please write this down and share it? Me and dozens of other classical guitar players would appreciate it very much!
One fix. The music was written by Steve Hackett and the lyrics were written by Collins and Hackett. One of their best songs and it is a shame that Collins and especially Hackett were restrained from contributing at that time. Hackett was never treated particularly well by the public school boys aka toffs who founded the group.
Oh, that sure was beautiful, and you know, I always thought "For Absent Friends" was their finest hour. I absolutely must to learn it. Thank you, you marvellous man, you made my day. Also I am most grateful for "Firth Of Fifth" just so you would know it.
This guy is amazing his arrangements capture everything that was Genesis and if anyone thinks they can fault him technically post your video and let see it!
You know when I listen to the soundtracks for many of the Final Fantasy games, I hear Genesis, ELP and a couple other old prog groups. I remember watching an interview with Nobuo Uematsu and he talked about those old group's influence on him. This may be his homage to them haha.
The very same. Sinclair's interpretation appeared on an album of Genesis covers by various artists called "Supper's Ready". If you run a google search you can download the tracks for 99 cents each.
could somebody help me out here please? The who played a song at the end of the glastonbury 2007 dedicated to absent friends entwistle/moon is this the track?
I'd rather agree with ESaetre. Pit's and Phil's voices were very much alike those times but according to the info I got from various sources Phi's first leading vocal was on More Fool Me. Peace :)
You are right about Phil singing lead on both songs. One of my fave Gen songs. The earlier albums had lovely songs like this. Are we sure it is Steve's playing? I was suprised that Tony Banks did a lot of 12-string work. I recall going to Peaches record store just after Steve left. The three of them were there and they were very nice. Have you ever played this tune on a 6/12 string w/steel strings? I would love to here it. I will listen to all your videos. Very nice work.
Thanks. i owned an unplayable 12-string about 25 years ago so i didn't get very far with it. I'd like to get a quality 12-string some day, but that's a bit down the road.
I play this song as well but with the standard chords. I had to figure it by ear and match it all with the words. Notice the Troubleclef picks out the notes rather than plays chords. He does it well.
wow wow!! pure greatness...I am a fan of genesis and a guitarist...I wish I could pay them tribute like you do, you got so much talent, thanks for all these great interpretations
Mate - truly fantastic. Can't really add much more than what the others have already said - but this is the first one I've seen and I'm going back to look at all your others. Brilliant.
thanks. "harlequin"-- that's a tough one. all those intertwiny 12 strings and vocal harmonies. an instrumental on only 6 strings can only do so much. I would love to work it out though.
Any chance of excerpts from Firth of Fifth by Genesis ? Another of my all time favourites.
I have step by step figured out a little part of it, and I think ( parts of) this tune could really make a great and demanding piece for solo guitar - especially when pleayed by someone as skilled as you ;-)
I would also love to hear you play Ralph McTell's "Hands of Joseph" including the Joseph Spence instrumental "Great Dreams of Heaven"/ "There will be a happy meeting" that Ralph usually wraps his tribute to Spence up with.
This ludic performance was the first one that I saw from you, I was searching for Genesis'Harlequin and then I found you. Thanks to the lovely old boys.Miss them toguether again someday. Good times! Beijo grande!
Please, master, do you can record this lessons in a contrapicado, from above and from your right, to see the acords executions better?. please, master, please!!!
Sir, you are a genius and an inspiration. Not only is your playing magnificent, and your choice of pieces a veritable treasure trove of my favourite songs, but your arrangements are making me hear these old Genesis numbers in a whole new way. I will learn a lot from you. Thank you so much for sharing your work with us.
Would it be possible to record the same song but with different playing, and put them together to give the impression that two guitarists are playing? If so, the one song I would like to hear in that fashion would be Stagnation. I don't think that Genesis ever played more fascinating guitar playing that Stagnation.
one of my all time favorite genesis songs also. somewhat problematic for arranging in fingerstyle though. long section that calls for pick strumming where it sort of rocks out with a long keyboard bit soloing over the top of it. that wouldn't work in fingerstyle too well. I could do excerpts (like i've done with most of the Genesis things) i guess. I've thought about it.
I'm supposed to be working but I keep clicking on these vids! Lovely playing. I requested Mad Man Moon a while back and lo and behold I heard it today. It's my fave Genesis song and brought tears to my eyes.

Inside the archway the priest greets them with a curteous nod - he's close to God.
Looking back at days of 4 instead of 2.
Fear seeps in two heads bent in prayer for friends not there.
Leaving 10p on the plate they hurry down the path and through the gate and wait to board the bus that ambles down the street.

dunno if I got them all right!

Sunday at 6, when they close both the gates,
a widowed pair, still sitting there. Wonder if they're late for church?
And it's cold. So they fasten their coats and cross the grass. They're always last.
Passing by the padlocked swings, the roundabout still turning, ahead they see a small girl on her way home with her pram.
